Abstract

Ship seaworthiness is a vital aspect of shipping safety that relies heavily on the integrity of the ship's structure, where corrosion poses a primary threat. To mitigate this risk, the Planned Maintenance System (PMS) is implemented as a planned maintenance standard in accordance with the ISM Code and international regulations. This study aims to analyze the mitigation of the corrosion rate in the implementation of the Planned Maintenance System (PMS) on MV. Bukit Raya to ensure ship seaworthiness. Using descriptive qualitative methods and Gap Analysis, data were collected through observation, interviews, and documentation. The results indicate that the implementation of PMS is not yet optimal due to tight operational schedules and short port stays, leading to improvisational maintenance. Non-compliance with surface preparation standards (ISO 8501-1) was found, often prioritized for aesthetic targets. This results in coating failures (blistering) and recurring corrosion, necessitating stricter supervision of technical maintenance standards.

Abstract

ABSTRACT Lifeboats are the only safety equipment that can save the crew in an emergency. This study aims to determine the maintenance process and crew skills in operating lifeboats. The research method used is descriptive qualitative with data collection techniques through observation, interviews, and documentation. Observations were made to determine the lifeboat maintenance process, the condition of lifeboat parts, and crew skills in operating lifeboats. Meanwhile, interviews were conducted with the Captain, chief officer, third officer and third engineer to obtain in-depth information regarding the technical problems that occurred. The research findings revealed that maintenance on the lifeboats on the MV. Tonasa Lines XV was not carried out according to the planned maintenance schedule. Furthermore, the crew was deemed incompetent in operating the lifeboats, resulting in delays in launching them. This, in turn, left them unprepared for emergencies. Suggested solutions include improving lifeboat maintenance in accordance with SOLAS 1974 regulations and providing training to the crew on lifeboat operating procedures.

Abstract

Cargo hold preparation is an important factor in supporting the smooth implementation of cargo handling operations on board. Based on the results of Sea Practice conducted on MV. Kairos Jaya 8, it was found that cargo hold preparation had not been carried out optimally. The problems identified included delays in cleaning the cargo hold, lack of supervision from officers, inconsistent use of inspection checklists, and unstructured task distribution. This study aims to analyze the factors causing the suboptimal cargo hold preparation and to formulate improvement efforts that can be implemented. The research method used was descriptive qualitative, with data collected through direct observation, interviews, and documentation. The results show that the absence of a systematic Standard Operating Procedure (SOP), lack of coordination among crew members, and weak supervision were the main factors. Improvement efforts include developing and implementing SOPs, applying cargo hold readiness checklists, clarifying task distribution, and strengthening officer supervision.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the maintenance system of lifeboat davits in preventing obstacles during the launching process of lifeboats on board KMP Titian Nusantara. Lifeboat davits are important safety equipment used to lower lifeboats during emergency situations at sea. This research uses a qualitative descriptive method with data collection techniques including observation, interviews, and documentation conducted directly on board the vessel. The results show that the maintenance of lifeboat davits has not been carried out optimally. Several problems were found, such as pulley jams, corrosion on components, and lack of lubrication on moving parts. These problems can potentially hinder the lifeboat launching process during emergency conditions. Therefore, routine inspection, proper maintenance procedures, and increased crew awareness are necessary to ensure the readiness of lifeboat davits. Proper maintenance management will improve the reliability of safety equipment and support maritime safety operations.
