Abstract

The purpose of this study was to determine whether the Fan-N-Pick technique significantly affected the students' vocabulary mastery both before and after it was used. A pre-test-post-test with a single group was the design used in this pre-experimental research. Class IV students from a state primary school in Plandaan, Jombang, served as population in this study. There were twenty total students, of which eighteen were the sample. Before beginning the two-meeting treatments utilizing the Fan-N-Pick technique, the experimental students were given a pre-test of twenty multiple-choice questions. The post-test was completed using the same question from the pre-test after the treatment finished. After compiling all vocabulary test results, SPSS was used to apply the descriptive statistics, normality test, and paired sample t-test. The t-test result showed that Sig. (2-tailed) value is 0,000, which is lower than the alpha value of 0.05. That result revealed that the students’ vocabulary mastery significantly increased before and after the Fan-N-Pick strategy application. Thus, the Fan-N-Pick strategy was effective for teaching vocabulary. Then, it is highly recommended for English teachers to teach vocabulary using the fan-the-pick strategy.

Abstract

Abstract

In this study, the researchers implemented brain-based learning (BBL) model and the use of the students’ high order thinking skills (HOTS) in the teaching and learning of writing. The aim of this study was to know whether or not there was an interaction effect between teaching models and students’ HOTS on the students’ writing ability. This experimental research used a 2x2 factorial design. Two classes of the fourth semester of English Language Department became the population and the sample in this study. The students in both of the classes were divided into the students with high and low HOTS. Then, the experimental class was taught writing by using BBL and the control class used guided writing. Next, the data got from the writing test were calculated by using a two-way ANOVA. The result showed that Fo interaction (10.160) was higher than Ft (4.15) at the level of significance α=0.05. It means that there was an interaction effect between teaching models and students’ HOTS on the students’ writing ability. The mean score of the students with high HOTS taught by using BBL (82.44) was the highest. This brings to the conclusion that BBL and HOTS had significant interaction effect on the students’ writing ability. The skills of analyzing, evaluating and creating the students whose HOTS was high worked well when having discussion. The students’ relaxed feelings in BBL class could help them to get information about what to be written in their texts more and more by having discussion.

Abstract

Conventional English learning models often emphasize learning on explicit English grammar mastery and the learning process is dominated by the teacher. This happens to English language education students carrying out teaching practice at schools so that the target of learning English at the schools is not achieved optimally. Therefore, the PkM team, which is a collaborative team from Universitas Hasyim Asy'ari Tebuireng Jombang and UIN Salatiga, agreed that students who will carry out teaching practice in schools need to be given training on a humanistic approach in learning English. Participants in this online training were 53 English language education students from two private universities in East Java and one state university in Central Java. This training was carried out for a week online, consisting of material presentations and assistance in making lesson plans based on a humanistic approach. After attending this training, students are increasingly able to understand how to teach in English classes. Students' understanding of the humanistic approach has increased and their lesson plans have also implemented a humanistic approach. In general, this training really needs to be provided as a provision for English language education students in carrying out teaching practices at schools.
