Abstract

Science learning assessment has always been challenging for science middle school teachers, especially when assessing students' scientific inquiry skills, which are essential to the science learning process. The study aims to highlight the challenges teachers confront when assessing high school pupils' capacity for scientific inquiry. It is a qualitative phenomenological study using thematic analysis techniques. Five middle school science teachers from junior high schools in Central Java participated in this study. Utilizing interviewing approaches, data was gathered. Using Clark Braun's thematic analysis methodologies, data analysis is carried out in four steps: (1) identifying the data, (2) performing coding, (3) creating themes, and (4) reviewing and defining the themes. This study shows that both internal and external factors might affect teachers' ability to undertake scientific inquiry research. The issue of obstacles teachers confront from the perspectives of students and learning systems is summarized by external variables. The researchers advised science teachers to engage in active, ongoing competence development to help them overcome challenges in evaluating scientific inquiries.

Abstract

Implementing scientific inquiry as a learning approach has accounted for most discussion topics and research areas in science education. Numerous studies have been conducted for decades; therefore, synthesizing the updated results will be worthwhile. Diverse needs require effective implementation of the vision of scientific inquiry for scientists, and various forms of learning output pose a challenge for scholars to provide a systematic summary of evidence regarding its role in science teaching and learning. Therefore, the random effect model was suitable for this paper to capture the impact of scientific inquiry on science learning comprehensively. A meta-analysis study using a random-effects model was chosen to systematically synthesize 22 academic articles gathered from the Scopus and Web of Science indexing databases. An individual paper was first extracted for its sample size, mean, and corresponding standard deviation, which were then calculated to measure the effect size of each piece of evidence using the JASP program. In summary, we highlight the positive and moderate impact of scientific investigation on student learning outcomes as a promising approach to enhancing science learning. This study fills the gap in the previous literature by providing a cross-cultural systematic synthesis of Indonesian and non-Indonesian literature, as well as comprehensively measuring the effects of scientific inquiry interventions. These findings support scientific inquiry as a promising approach to learning and encourage the sustainability of efforts to enhance the quality of science learning in various educational contexts.

Abstract

Regression analysis is a statistical technique frequently employed across diverse disciplines utilizing SPSS. Users lacking a robust basis in regression and infrequently utilizing SPSS will experience anxiety. Anxiety will be intensified by the interpretation of the analysis results. This work aims to create user-friendly statistical software for regression analysis, requiring little configuration and capable of interpreting analytical results. This study employed the SCLD development model. This paradigm comprises five stages: Planning, Analysis, Design, Implementation, and System. The produced software is titled Simple Statistical Software series Regression Analysis, abbreviated as 3S-AR. The development yielded the 3S-AR program, which possesses functionality for regression analysis. The validation of development results was conducted by comparing the outcomes of 3S-AR analysis with those obtained from SPSS software. 3S-AR provides numerous advantages. Initially, it was user-friendly, and minimal configuration was required. A single analysis can present the outcomes of the regression analysis alongside all relevant assumptions. Secondly, the capability to offer an interpretation of the analytical findings. Third, if an analysis is incomplete, it can offer recommendations on the user's next steps. Fourth, it is complimentary. The development outcomes can facilitate users in conducting regression analysis with ease, particularly for individuals lacking a robust statistical background and proficiency in regression analysis tools.

Abstract

This study was motivated by the relatively low level of Indonesian students' scientific argumentation skills in solving science problems from the Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA), particularly in constructing logical relationships among claims, data, and warrants. The study focuses on mapping students' scientific argumentation structures based on Toulmin's Argument Pattern within the context of PISA science tasks developed according to the PISA 2025 Science Framework, an area that has received limited attention at the junior secondary school level. This research aimed to examine the relationship among the claim, data, and warrant components in students' scientific argumentation. A qualitative case study design was employed involving 84 ninth-grade junior high school students. Data were collected through students' responses to PISA-based science questions and analyzed using Toulmin's Argument Pattern by focusing on three essential components: claim, data, and warrant. The findings revealed that the most frequently identified argumentation structure was claim–data (C–D), accounting for 44.04%, followed by claim (C) at 30.35%, and claim–data–warrant (C–D–W) at 25.59%. The results indicate that most students were able to formulate claims supported by relevant data. However, many students experienced difficulties in constructing warrants that logically connected the supporting data with the proposed claims. These findings suggest that science instruction should place greater emphasis on developing students' ability to construct warrants in order to produce more coherent and evidence-based scientific arguments.
