Abstract

This study aims to delineate the categories of assertive illocutionary acts that are present in the state speech of President Joe Biden. Searle's (1979) classification of illocutionary acts was implemented by the researcher in this study. The data analyzed in this research is qualitative descriptive, as the results may be presented in the form of sentences or words. President Joe Biden's 2024 State of the Union Address and assertive illocutionary acts serve as the focus of this study. From the data sources of this research, the researcher was able to identify five distinct classifications of assertive illocutionary acts. This research found 51 data of assertive illocutionary acts in President Joe Biden’s state speech. In addition, the most dominant classification of assertives that was found in the data source is informing with 20 (39,21%) occurrences followed by stating with 14 (27,45%) occurrences, asserting with 11 (21,56%), boasting with 4 (7,84%). The least dominant types of assertive illocutionary act that was found namely; complaining with 2 (3,92%) occurrences. The Informing type is said to be the most dominant because speakers provide information to their listeners more often than conveying ordinary things. Abstract

The purpose of this study is to explore the types of illocutionary acts and the context of situations in each utterance within the Maleficent movie. The study is grounded in Searle's (1979) theory on illocutionary act types and Halliday and Hasan's (1989) theory on situational context. The analysis was carried out using a descriptive qualitative approach. To gather the data, the researcher employed an observation method, which involved watching the Maleficent movie multiple times and taking notes on the main characters' utterances. After gathering the data, the researcher analyzed it in a series of procedures, including categorizing the illocutionary acts by kind and determining the context of each situation. The results of this investigation revealed 39 utterances that suggest illocutionary acts. The following is the result of this study: directives have the highest frequency of occurrence (30.8 %) with 12 utterances. It is followed by commissive (11 utterances, 28.2%), assertive (10 utterances, 25.6%), expressives (4 utterances, 10.3%), and declaratives (2 utterances, 5.1%).

Abstract

This research analyzes the types of expressive illocutionary acts in the Look Both Ways movie. Data were collected through non-participant observation by watching the film multiple times to identify and classify expressive utterances by the main characters, Nathalie and Cara. The data were categorized using Searle and Vanderveken’s (1985) theory, supported by Halliday and Hasan’s (1985) context of situation. A total of 39 expressive acts were found, with thanking (35.9%) as the most frequent. The context of situation field, tenor, and mode significantly influences the meaning and function of each act. This study highlights the importance of expressive illocutionary acts in building emotional connections and shaping character relationships, while also contributing pragmatic insights into film discourse and enriching linguistic research in cinematic contexts.

Abstract

Pragmatics is essential for understanding implied meaning beyond literal language in cinematic dialogues, providing valuable insights into character interaction and story development. This study explores the deliberate flouting of the maxim of relevance, based on Grice’s (1975) Cooperative Principle, in the animated film Inside Out 2. Using a qualitative descriptive method, data were collected through careful observation and verbatim transcription of 58 dialogue exchanges. Among these, 21 instances of maxim of relevance flouting were identified, with eight selected for detailed examination. The analysis reveals that these pragmatic strategies serve to express hidden meanings, regulate emotions, and navigate complex interpersonal relationships between characters. These communicative choices uncover psychological depth and enhance both character development and plot progression. Uniquely, this research contributes to pragmatic theory by examining conversational relevance manipulation within animation, expanding film studies scholarship. The findings also offer practical implications for language education and media analysis by demonstrating how pragmatic competence enriches understanding of dialogue in multimedia contexts.
