Abstract

Halal awareness leads a key role in shaping health-related decision making among Muslim. As Muslims are obliged to consume halal products, concerns regarding halal status may influence their intention to accept vaccines and pharmaceutical drugs. The study aim is to assess the acceptance of halal vaccines and drugs based on the level of halal awareness among DKI Jakarta residents by halal knowledge, attitudes, and behavior. This cross-sectional was conducted among 400 respondents. Data were analyzed using univariate and bivariate analyses, with Spearman’s rho employed to assess correlations between variables. The results showed that the level of knowledge was moderate (59.5%), for attitude was categorized as positive (84.5%), and behavior was low (44.5%). As for the correlation results with the Spearman rho test, it was concluded that there was a relationship between the level of knowledge and attitude, the result was a p-value of 0.016 (P<0.05) from a negative value of r= -0.121, while between the level of knowledge and behavior the relationship was a p-value of 0.001 (P<0.05 ) from a value of r = 0.289, and between attitudes and behavior there is a relationship as the variable value showed of p-value 0.036 (P<0.05) from a negative value of r = -0.105. These findings indicate that halal awareness significantly influences intention and acceptance behavior toward halal vaccines and drugs.

Abstract

Abstract

The growing accumulation of petroleum-based plastic waste has intensified the search for biodegradable alternatives from renewable resources. This study investigated the effect of clove essential oil (CEO) on the mechanical and barrier properties of composite bioplastic films from semi-refined carrageenan and cassava starch (30:70) with 30% glycerol. Unlike previous studies using purified biopolymers or focusing solely on antimicrobial effects, this work uniquely evaluates CEO as a dual-function agent plasticizer and hydrophobic barrier enhancer within a low-cost carrageenan–starch matrix to identify the optimal loading for balanced packaging performance. Films were prepared by solution-casting with CEO at 0, 0.5, 1.0, 1.5, and 2.0% (w/w). Increasing CEO content decreased tensile strength (18.2 to 12.1 MPa) and Young's modulus (612 to 365 MPa), while elongation increased (22.4% to 41.6%). WVP and oxygen permeability decreased by 39% and 43%, respectively, alongside an increase in contact angle (68.4° to 89.6°), indicating enhanced hydrophobicity. FTIR confirmed physical dispersion without new covalent bonding. Films remained biodegradable, though higher CEO slowed degradation. The 1.0–1.5% CEO formulation offered the most balanced combination of flexibility, barrier performance, and degradability for sustainable food packaging.

Abstract

Soil-transmitted helminth (STH) infections most commonly infect preschool and school-age children. The prevalence of STH infection remains high, i.e., 73 million children are infected in Indonesia. The most commonly infecting worms are roundworms (Ascaris lumbricoides), whipworms (Trichuris trichiura), and hookworms (Ancylostoma duodenale and Necator americanus). STH infection is transmitted through soil contaminated by STH eggs or larvae. Personal hygiene, availability of clean water, and defecation behavior are factors in the development of STH infection. Prolonged infection can cause malnutrition, anemia, and slow growth. This study aims to examine the association between nutritional status, age, and gender on the incidence of STH infection. This research is a descriptive-analytical study with a cross-sectional approach. Fifteen (42.86%) of 35 preschool and school-age children's stool samples were positive for Ascaris lumbricoides eggs. The nutritional status of the children was grouped into underweight, normal, and overweight. The body mass index (BMI) calculation resulted in 65.71% (23/35) underweight, 31.43% (11/35) normal, and 2.86% (1/35) overweight children. The Spearmen test shows that there is no significant correlation between nutritional status (p=0.517), age (p=0.614), and gender (p=0.637) on STH infection.

Abstract

Hand sanitizer is a widely used antiseptic preparation for reducing microbial contamination on the hands. This study aimed to develop and evaluate the physical characteristics and antibacterial activity of a hand sanitizer gel formulated with ethanol extract of passion fruit leaves (Passiflora edulis Sims.). The extract was obtained through maceration using 96% ethanol and subsequently formulated into three gel formulations (F1, F2, and F3) with varying extract concentrations. The gel base consisted of Carbopol 940 as a gelling agent, triethanolamine (TEA) as a pH adjuster and neutralizing agent, glycerin as a humectant, and methyl paraben as a preservative. Physical evaluations included organoleptic assessment, pH, spreadability, adhesion, and viscosity, conducted over 12 weeks of storage at 4°C and 40°C. Antibacterial activity was assessed using the disc diffusion method against Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus. The results showed that all formulations produced a homogeneous, semisolid gel with good physical stability. The measured pH, spreadability, adhesion, and viscosity values of all formulations remained within the acceptable range for topical gel preparations. Antibacterial testing demonstrated that activity increased with higher concentrations of the extract. Among the formulations, F3 exhibited the strongest antibacterial effect, with inhibition zone diameters of 11.8 mm against Escherichia coli and 14.3 mm against Staphylococcus aureus. Overall, these findings indicate that passion fruit leaf ethanol extract can be successfully formulated into a stable and effective hand sanitizer gel with antibacterial properties.
