Abstract

This study covers the pragmatics equivalence and violation maxims in the Divergent novel. Classifying the forms of Grice maxim violations and describing the pragmatic equivalence of violation maxims in the Divergent novel are the objectives of this study. It is a qualitative paper that examines violation maxims and pragmatic equivalence in the novel Divergent. The data were direct-utterances infraction maxims in English and Indonesian. There are two types of data analysis techniques employed in this study. The analysis began with a document review, followed by an evaluation of the translation's quality based on pragmatic equivalence. As a result of the research, the following findings were discovered: 139 data were classified as violation maxims. The majority of the results (45,32.4%) involved violations of the quality standard. Second, based on the qualitative parameter of pragmatic equivalence, a total of 137 out of 139 data points were deemed "accurate translation" and  two out of 139 (1,43%) data might be regarded as "less accurate translation." This investigation uncovered no translations that may be deemed inaccurate.

Abstract

This study investigates the role of social deixis in the film "Avengers" and its influence on character interactions, narrative development, and audience engagement. Social deixis, a linguistic phenomenon involving the use of language to establish social relationships and navigate social contexts, plays a vital role in shaping the dynamics of communication within the Avengers team. By closely examining the dialogue and language choices of the characters, this study aims to identify the types of deixis employed and explore their implications for character development and plot progression. Through a qualitative analysis of selected scenes, the findings reveal the diverse range of social deixis strategies utilized, including personal deixis, honorific deixis, politeness deixis, demonstrative deixis, and more. These linguistic choices contribute to the establishment of power dynamics, the formation of group identity, and the conveyance of emotional and interpersonal nuances. Moreover, they enhance the audience's understanding of the characters' relationships, motivations, and conflicts. This study enhances our understanding of the intricate interplay between language, social interaction, and narrative construction in the context of a popular film franchise. It provides valuable insights into the significance of social deixis in cinematic storytelling and opens avenues for further research in the field of discourse analysis, linguistics, and film studies.

Abstract

To reveal information within a discussion, moderator usually implements strategies to leverage the addressee to arouse more responses. This paper aims to investigate moderators’ speech strategies in tvOne discussion, Indonesia Lawyers Club (ILC). The data were utterances during the session of discussion collected by using purposive sampling and the results areten different topics performed onevery Tuesday night from 8 to 11 p.m. in 2012. The technique for analyzing data iscomprehensive analysis referring to pragmatic context both for the strategies of speech act by Searle (1979) and maxims of Cooperative Principles by Grice (1989). The findings show that the most powerful moderators’ speech strategy used to reveal information is directly literal speech act strategy, with the variations of: (1) signaling the adressee with/or without speaking verbally;this signal of non-verbal language is used to show and reveal intimacy; (2) repeating the addressee’s words to show more response to the addressee; (3) using suggestingformula to give respect, especially to addressee with higher status; (4) making counter to ones’ opinions to prove the realinformation;and (5) presenting polite criticism to remark the answer, in which the latter presented less indirectly.

Abstract

AI-generated feedback is expected to be exploited for enhancing learners’ speaking skills and maintaining learners’ emotional state. The magical power might overshadow teachers’ feedback, as well. For further investigating learners’ perception of AI-generated feedback compared to teachers’ feedback in fostering learners’ speaking skills and maintaining emotional state, this study employed a mix-method. Data were collected through a 15-item questionnaire and semi-structured interviews with Grade XI students at Budi Utomo Senior High School. The questionnaire examined the intensity of feedback reception, learners’ preferences for feedback providers in improving speaking skills (lexis, stressed word patterns, intonation, fluency, grammar, communicative functions, and physical paralinguistic features), and the emotional impact of feedback (self-esteem, motivation, and anxiety). Interviews, conducted via WhatsApp voice notes for flexibility, provided deeper insights into learners' experiences with both feedback types. Thematic analysis revealed that learners perceived AI-generated feedback as beneficial for improving specific aspects of speaking, particularly pronunciation and fluency, while teacher feedback was valued for its personalized and interactive nature. Emotional responses varied, with AI-generated feedback fostering self-directed learning but sometimes lacking the motivational support provided by teachers. The study highlights the complementary roles of AI and teacher feedback in fostering speaking skill development and emotional engagement. These findings contribute to the ongoing discourse on AI in language education and provide implications for optimizing feedback strategies in EFL classrooms.

Abstract

This study examines the MOOD analysis of interpersonal meaning in articles in online newspapers about the covid-19 vaccine in Indonesia. The purpose of this study is to explain the formula of MOOD analysis realized in grammar and to describe the speakers' mood in the application of the MOOD analysis in Indonesia's covid-19 vaccine article from online newspaper. The main focus of this research is on descriptive text articles and MOOD structure. This type of research is descriptive qualitative, the author uses observation documentation as a technique to obtain and measure data. The data were obtained by applying the theory of Gerot and Wignell (1994). The researcher found 259 clauses from six texts which became data taken from various online news sources. In the formula, there are various types such as Subject + Finite (Tense), Subject + Finite (Do), Subject + Finite (Modal), Subject + Finite (Have) and Subject + Finite (To be). The most commonly found category is the use of Finite (Tense). In the mood of the speaker, it is found that the speaker expresses certainty, possibility, uncertainty, obligation and advice. What most of the speakers said was certainty. In the analysis also found several categories of modalities, which after that can be included in the degree of modality, namely high, medium, and low. Because the limitations of this study are in a declarative, all clauses are statements that function to convey information from the author to the reader.
