Abstract

This study aims to reveal the representation of social criticism in Erwin Arnada's novel “Rumah di Seribu Ombak”. This study uses a qualitative descriptive method through the Critical Discourse Analysis (AWK) approach modeled by Norman Fairclough. The focus of the study lies in three dimensions of discourse meaning, namely experiential, relational, and expressive values, which are analyzed through aspects of vocabulary, grammar, and text structure. Data sources come from quotations in the novel that contain social criticism. Data collection techniques are carried out by reading and taking notes on texts containing elements of social criticism. Meanwhile, the data analysis technique uses Norman Fairclough's discourse analysis model which includes three levels, namely text analysis (vocabulary, grammar, text structure), discourse practice (text production and consumption), and social practice (socio-cultural context). The results of the study show that social criticism in the novel is represented through the choice of vocabulary (synonyms, antonyms, hyponyms), grammatical forms (active, passive, imperative, modality), and text structure (turn-taking, topic control) that contain social values such as poverty, class inequality, subordination, and power domination. Experiential values reflect the social reality of the characters, relational values show social positions in interactions, and expressive values show attitudes and emotions towards social injustice. This study concludes that the novel Rumah di Seribu Ombak is not only a work of fiction, but also a medium of social criticism that depicts the reality of society in depth and gives voice to marginalized groups.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the representation of forms of sexism against women in Lucia Priandarini’s Penyalin Cahaya novel through the perspective of Sara Mills’ Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA). The phenomenon of sexual violence, which is rooted in sexism within Sara Mills' framework, is a crucial issue that needs to be critically examined through discourse analysis in literary works. The research employs a qualitative descriptive method using the literature study technique, where data consisting of textual quotations and narration from the novel are analyzed using Sara Mills' CDA. The findings reveal that sexism against women is divided into two primary forms. First, physical sexism (or overt sexism) is manifested through the objectification of women’s bodies, pornography, and sexual harassment, functioning as a tool to assert male dominance and control over women’s bodies. Second, verbal sexism (or indirect sexism) is found in the forms of sexist labeling, gender stereotypes in language, and sexist jokes. Overall, the findings conclude that sexism in the Penyalin Cahaya novel operates as a discursive mechanism that effectively maintains and reinforces the patriarchal power structure, with language and action being used as instruments of control that demean and restrict women's roles. This analysis can serve as a reference for enhancing critical awareness regarding sexist discourse in contemporary literary texts.

Abstract

Abstract

This study aims to describe the forms of social conflict found in novel Si Anak Pemberani by Tere Liye's based on Lewis A. Coser's theory of social conflict using a literary sociology approach. The type of research used is descriptive qualitative research, which aims to interpret data in the form of social conflict discourse that appears in the novel text. The source of data for this research is the novel Si Anak Pemberani by Tere Liye. Data collection techniques were carried out by reading and taking notes. Data analysis was carried out through the stages of identification, classification, interpretation, and conclusion drawing. The results of the study show that in this novel there are two forms of social conflict, namely realistic conflict and non-realistic conflict. Realistic conflict arises due to concrete social needs and demands such as livelihood, justice, equality, and environmental sustainability directed at those in power, officials, and mining companies as the source of the problem. Meanwhile, non-realistic conflict arises as a form of emotional venting, such as anger, disappointment, or frustration, which has no clear purpose and is often directed at parties who are made scapegoats. Overall, these two forms of conflict describe the social reality of a society fraught with tension and the struggle against injustice

Abstract

This study explored the violations from Grice’s cooperative maxims within English language classroom interactions at an English Learning Centre. The research aimed to identify which maxim is most frequently violated and to explain the pragmatic functions of these violations. Applying a qualitative research approach, the researcher examined two audio-recorded classroom sessions: recordings were transcribed and analyzed using interactive analysis (Miles, Huberman, & Saldana). Data underwent reduction, classified under the four Gricean maxims (specifically Quantity, Quality, Relation, Manner), and demonstrated through selected extracts. Finding indicated that breaches of Relation Maxim occurred most often (50%), with Manner (21.42%), Quality (19.04%), and Quantity (9.52%) following in order. Data excerpts indicated that many breaches serve pragmatic purposes to create humor and elicit laughter, maintain rapport, control speaker exchange, and allow self-correction instead of signaling communicative breakdown. The study contended that within informal classroom interaction, dynamic interaction frequently emphasized social interaction instead of rigid information transfer, and that sensitivity of maxim flouting is essential to pragmatic competence. The limitations include a small dataset and lack of reported inter-rater validation. The study closed with a recommendation of explicit pragmatic instruction and future studies utilizing larger samples and verification measures to enhance teaching approaches aimed at fostering pragmatic ability among EFL learners.

Abstract

This study examines the illocutionary speech acts employed in the Indonesian Minister of Primary and Secondary Education's address at the UNESCO General Conference in November 2025, applying Searle's taxonomy of speech acts as the analytical framework. The analysis of 42 speech acts reveals that assertive utterances dominate the discourse, accounting for 47.62%, followed by commissives at 23.81%, expressives at 14.29%, directives at 11.90%, and declaratives at 2.38%. The findings demonstrate how diplomatic discourse strategically employs various speech acts to convey national positions, establish commitments, and maintain international relationships. This research contributes to understanding the pragmatic dimensions of diplomatic communication and the linguistic strategies employed by representatives of developing nations in multilateral forums.
