Abstract

This study aims to analyze the types and pragmatic functions of speech acts performed by the character Anxiety in Pixar’s animated film Inside Out 2 and to examine their implications for educational management, particularly in the context of social-emotional learning. Employing a qualitative descriptive approach grounded in Speech Act Theory, the data were obtained from Anxiety’s utterances in the film and analyzed through classification and interpretative techniques. The utterances were categorized based on Searle’s taxonomy of illocutionary acts. The findings reveal that directive and expressive speech acts dominate Anxiety’s language, reflecting its role as a controlling and protective emotion that influences decision-making and emotional regulation during adolescence. Directive acts function to manage behavior and anticipate risk, while expressive acts convey emotional tension, concern, and fear. These results indicate that speech acts in animated films serve as linguistic representations of psychological states. The study implies that understanding emotional speech acts can support educational management practices, particularly in classroom management and social-emotional learning programs, by providing insights into how language shapes emotional regulation, student behavior, and supportive learning environments

Abstract

This study aims to examine expressive speech acts in Habiburrahman El Shirazy’s novel Kembara Rindu and to explore how these speech acts reflect educational leadership and management values within socio-religious contexts. Using a qualitative descriptive approach, the study adopts a pragmatic framework grounded in Speech Act Theory to analyze selected character dialogues. The data consist of utterances expressing gratitude, apology, praise, complaint, lamentation, and religious wishes, which are examined to identify their types and pragmatic functions within the narrative. The findings reveal that expressive speech acts are predominantly employed to maintain interpersonal harmony, reinforce moral positioning, and construct religious identity. Moreover, these expressive acts function as strategic linguistic tools that reflect core dimensions of educational management, including value-based leadership, ethical communication, emotional regulation, and character formation. Rather than serving merely as emotional expressions, the speech acts demonstrate how language operates as a managerial instrument for guiding behavior, managing social relations, and transmitting educational values. This study implies that literary texts can serve as reflective resources for educational management by illustrating effective communication practices and moral leadership, thereby contributing to the development of character-based and value-oriented educational management models.

Abstract

This study analyses Sapardi Djoko Damono's novel Sunyi adalah Minuman Keras (Silence is Alcohol), focusing on power relations over the body and mind, as well as forms of resistance that emerge in the text. This study aims to analyse Sapardi Djoko Damono's novel Sunyi adalah Minuman Keras (Silence is Alcohol), focusing on power relations over the body and mind, as well as forms of resistance that emerge in the text. Using a qualitative approach and Michel Foucault's critical discourse analysis, this study explains how power operates through language and shapes individual subjectivity in the novel. The results show that cognitive control mechanisms such as manipulation, objectification, and stigmatisation reflect power relations over the mind. These mechanisms shape the way characters view themselves and their world. Furthermore, social control that regulates physical actions, lifestyles, and bodily discipline reveals that power relations over the body are often reinforced by cultural and religious norms. The novel also depicts resistance to power through various explicit and implicit means in the characters' storylines. This study shows that Sunyi is Minuman Keras is not merely a work of literature, but also a complex representation of the power dynamics that shape human life. This study helps us understand how literary discourse can both replicate and challenge power structures in society.

Abstract

This study aims to examine the differences in social status between the natives and the colonizers in the novel Pangeran dari Timur (Prince of the East) by Iksaka Banu and Kurnia Effendi using Ania Loomba's postcolonial perspective. This study uses a qualitative method with a descriptive-analytical approach. The data sources are quotations from the novel that represent colonial relations, including dialogues, narratives, and scene descriptions. The data were collected through reading and note-taking techniques, then analyzed using the concepts of racial hierarchy, social class, education, and modernity. The results of the study show that colonialism constructed a social status hierarchy that placed European colonizers as the superior group and indigenous people as the inferior group. Education and modernity functioned as means of ideological domination that limited social mobility. The conclusion of the study confirms that colonialism normalized the domination of the colonizers and degraded the dignity of the indigenous people.

Abstract

This study aims to examine the forms and functions of illocutionary speech acts in Bawaslu RI Podcast Episode 32: “Pengawasan Partisipatif”, featuring Lolly Suhenty as the guest speaker. The phenomenon under investigation arises from the increasing use of digital media as a means of public communication for state institutions, which requires effective language strategies to deliver persuasive messages to the public. The research employs a qualitative case study approach, as it focuses on a single communication event analyzed in depth. Data were collected through documentation techniques in the form of a full transcript of the podcast episode, supported by content analysis and a review of relevant literature. The unit of analysis consists of all utterances by the speaker that contain potential illocutionary speech acts. The analysis reveals three dominant categories of illocutionary acts: directive, representative, and commissive. Directive acts reflect invitations and encouragement for the public to participate actively in election oversight. Representative acts appear in the form of explanations, factual statements, and clarifications regarding the mechanisms of participatory monitoring. Meanwhile, commissive acts demonstrate Bawaslu’s commitment to expanding education and collaborative oversight. These three types of illocutionary acts play a crucial role in constructing persuasive communication and strengthening the relationship between Bawaslu and the public. This study contributes to the development of pragmatic research within the context of digital institutional communication and offers practical implications for Bawaslu in designing more effective public communication strategies. Future research is recommended to broaden the data sources across various podcast episodes or other digital communication platforms to obtain a more comprehensive understanding.

Abstract

Colonialism affects not only territorial control but also the psychological destruction of colonized subjects through unequal power relations that generate systemic trauma. This article analyzes the representation of colonial trauma in Rasina by Iksaka Banu using Frantz Fanon’s postcolonial psychological framework. Employing a qualitative descriptive method with an objective approach, data were collected through text analysis and systematic note-taking. The analysis followed Denzin and Lincoln’s model, including data collection, reduction, presentation, and conclusion drawing. The findings indicate that Rasina portrays the profound psychological collapse of its main character as a result of continuous colonial violence. Trauma manifests in literary representation resembling what Fanon terms reactionary psychosis, reflected in self-alienation, severe depression, acute anxiety, and psychosomatic disorders, particularly the loss of speech caused by systemic dehumanization. Unlike previous studies that predominantly emphasize sociological perspectives, this research demonstrates that colonial structures actively produce psychological damage that undermines individual psychological autonomy. This study contributes to postcolonial literary scholarship by offering a focused analysis of the pathological effects of colonial history in modern Indonesian literature.

Abstract

This study aims to describe the forms of power domination and resistance depicted in the short story Kematian Paman Gober by Seno Gumira Ajidarma, using a descriptive qualitative method. The analysis reveals the presence of bourgeois exploitation and selfishness, highlighting the ongoing oppression of the proletariat. Two main forms of domination are identified: bourgeois domination rooted in egoism and systemic exploitation. In response, various forms of resistance emerge, including protest, condemnation, threats toward the bourgeois class, and attacks on capital production and business operations. This research contributes to Indonesian literary studies through a Marxist perspective, particularly in examining social marginalization as portrayed in short fiction. By focusing on the representation of lower-class characters and class power relations, the study underscores the role of literature as a medium of critique against socio-economic inequality. Future studies are encouraged to investigate similar themes in other literary genres such as novels or drama, and to adopt interdisciplinary approaches for a more comprehensive understanding of class struggles in Indonesian literature.
