Abstract

This study explores the multidimensional concept of hijrah in the Qur’an through the perspectives of two contemporary exegetes representing the Sunni and Shia traditions: Muhammad Quraish Shihab (Tafsir al-Mishbah) and Nāṣīr Makārim Shīrāzī (Tafsir al-Amṯāl). Employing a qualitative library-based approach and a cross-mazhab thematic tafsir method, the research aims to uncover how both scholars interpret hijrah as a relevant social and spiritual transformation. Findings indicate that both exegetes view hijrah holistically, encompassing physical movement, social struggle, and inner purification. Shihab emphasizes hijrah as moral and societal renewal toward an inclusive and ethical community in the Indonesian context, while Shīrāzī highlights its spiritual dimension as an inner jihad against egoism and injustice. Despite doctrinal differences, both use similar analytical and literary-social methods, demonstrating a convergence on hijrah as a timeless call for ethical transformation and social justice. This cross-mazhab approach enriches Qur’anic scholarship by bridging sectarian perspectives and offering practical implications for contemporary Muslim societies.

Abstract

Abstract

The character crisis affecting the younger generation demands a strategic role for religious education in shaping individuals with noble character. Islamic Religious Education (PAI) holds significant potential in instilling the moral, spiritual, and social values necessary to shape a generation of integrity. This study aims to analyze the role of PAI in shaping students' character and identify supporting and inhibiting factors within the context of formal education. The method used was a qualitative approach with a case study design in three secondary schools in West Java. Data collection techniques included in-depth interviews, participant observation, and documentation studies. The results indicate that PAI is capable of shaping students' character through the integration of values into learning, teacher role models, and Islamic school culture. Supporting factors include teacher quality, religious habituation programs, and parental involvement, while obstacles include limited learning duration and the influence of digital media. The study's conclusion emphasizes that PAI must be implemented holistically and collaboratively to create a generation that is not only intellectually intelligent but also morally and spiritually strong.

Abstract

In the era of globalization and the complexity of global challenges, education faces pressure to produce graduates who are able to think critically, adaptively, and provide solutions to global problems such as climate change, social inequality, and the technological crisis. At the national level, educational curricula are often sectoral and partial, thus failing to prepare students to face the dynamics of global problems holistically. The urgency of this study arises from the need for innovative pedagogical strategies that can bridge the learning of disciplinary concepts with the real application of complex problems, while being relevant for the development of 21st-century education. This study aims to analyze the transdisciplinary approach as a framework for developing a learning model based on complex global problems, emphasizing its contribution to the integration of knowledge, values, and critical thinking skills of students. The study used a qualitative approach with a literature study method. Data were collected from primary and secondary sources in the form of educational theory books, international journal articles, curriculum policies, and research reports related to transdisciplinary learning. Data analysis was conducted descriptively and analytically using conceptual and comparative synthesis techniques, and data validity strategies through source triangulation and expert validation. The results show that the transdisciplinary approach enables the integration of cross-disciplinary perspectives, improves complex problem-solving abilities, and encourages contextual learning that is relevant globally and locally. The developed model of complex global problem-based learning emphasizes collaboration, critical reflection, and real-world applicability. The implications of this study confirm its theoretical contribution in expanding the holistic education paradigm and its practical implications for educators in designing innovative learning strategies responsive to global challenges.

Abstract

This article investigates the disproportionate prevalence of caliphs born to umm al-walad, concubines who bore sons to Abbasid rulers, compared to those born of legal wives (al-nisāʾ al-maḥāʾir) in the early Abbasid caliphate. Drawing on classical historiographical sources and prosopographic data on thirty-seven Abbasid caliphs, this study explores the political logic behind this pattern. Rather than viewing this as a biological coincidence, the paper argues that it reflects a deliberate strategy of dynastic consolidation, privileging sons of concubines as more politically neutral, malleable, and free from tribal or aristocratic maternal affiliations. The article applies gender analysis, nasab theory, and Foucauldian discourse theory to show how the caliphate reproduced power not only through law and bloodline, but through narrative and institutional control. Ultimately, it reframes the role of umm al-walad not as passive bearers of lineage, but as embedded figures in the machinery of power, whose sons embodied the ideal of state-dependent, non-tribal leadership. The study highlights how historiography served as an instrument of legitimizing these choices, challenging normative assumptions about lineage, legitimacy, and gender in early Islamic political thought. This study also contributes to Islamic educational studies by showing how caliphal succession functioned as a site of political pedagogy, where power, obedience, and legitimacy were cultivated through maternal education and courtly socialization.
