Abstract

Hypertension is a non-communicable disease (NCD) which is a health problem in society, one of ten diseases that cause mortality in Asia (Saha, Sana, Shana, 2006). Hypertension can cause coronary heart disease, congestive heart failure, stroke, kidney failure. 70% of strokes can be fatal and 65% affect the kidneys. This phenomenon is caused by changes in people's lifestyles globally, such as the easier it is to get ready-to-eat food, the lower consumption of salt, fat, sugar and calories. which continues to increase so that it has a big role in increasing the incidence of hypertension and the prevalence of hypertension continues to increase throughout the world in adults, 29.2%. There are 8 provinces in Indonesia with cases of hypertension sufferers exceeding the average, namely: South Sulawesi (27%), West Sumatra (27%), West Java (26%), West Java (26%), East Java (25%), North Sumatra (24%), South Sumatra (24%), Central Sulawesi (29.8%) Based on the 2020 Central Sulawesi Health Profile, the estimate for hypertension sufferers aged ≥ 15 years in Central Sulawesi province is 384,072 (2.33%). In the villages of Taipanggabe, Wayu and Matantimali, Sigi Regency, Central Sulawesi Province, 17 elderly people were found to have hypertension.

Abstract

Hypertension is high blood pressure that is often found in the elderly population. Currently, the prevalence of hypertension in Sigi Regency is still quite high, namely 1,325 people. Meanwhile, there are still many hypertension sufferers who do not control their blood pressure. Thus, preventive and control measures are needed so that serious complications do not occur in sufferers. Actions that can be taken to achieve positive results for hypertension sufferers in controlling their blood pressure are by conducting direct blood pressure checks, health education and hypertension exercise training. The purpose of this community service is to increase public knowledge and awareness in controlling and controlling their blood pressure within normal limits. The method used is through lectures and direct training (demonstrations and simulations) on hypertension exercise. The results of this community service activity showed an increase in knowledge about hypertension and a decrease in average systolic and diastolic blood pressure. In addition, participants were able to do hypertension exercise movements correctly and independently after participating in the training. Counseling and training in hypertension exercise are very important because they provide significant benefits in increasing public knowledge in order to maintain optimal blood pressure and prevent more serious complications.

Abstract

One of the most prevalent chronic conditions among the elderly is hypertension, which raises the risk of cardiovascular problems. Using communication tools like WhatsApp groups, telenursing can enhance blood pressure control and health literacy. This study shows how older people with hypertension and knowledge are affected by health education through telenursing via WhatsApp groups. A pretest-posttest control group was included in the quasi-experimental study design. Elderly individuals with hypertension who were split into intervention and control groups made up the sample. The intervention group received health education via WhatsApp, whereas the control group received normal education at a health institution. Parametric statistical tests were used to assess knowledge, systolic, and diastolic blood pressure data at a significance level of p<0.05. The findings demonstrated that the intervention group's knowledge had significantly increased (from 6.39±1.32 to 12.14±1.35, p<0.001) in contrast to the control group (from 6.57±1.43 to 9.18±2.02, p<0.001). The intervention group experienced a significant decrease in systolic blood pressure (154.36±9.07 to 127.86±10.69 mmHg, p<0.001) compared to the control group (158.57±18.36 to 144.89±18.67 mmHg, p<0.001). The decrease in diastolic blood pressure was significant in both groups, but not significant between groups (p=0.387). Conclusion: WhatsApp group-based telenursing improves knowledge and reduces systolic blood pressure in elderly with hypertension. This technique is recommended for further research and community support with longer intervention durations, as well as for cost-effectiveness analyses.

Abstract

Hypertension remains a significant health problem worldwide, including in Indonesia. Prevention and regular blood pressure checks, as well as complementary therapies such as antihypertensive exercises, are needed to control this condition. The purpose of this community service is to increase elderly knowledge about hypertension and antihypertensive exercises as an effort to prevent and control blood pressure. The methods used in this activity include blood pressure checks, counseling on hypertension, and demonstration of antihypertensive exercises. The activity was carried out in Mantawa Village, precisely at the Balai Banjar Dusun III on December 16, 2024, attended by 42 elderly people (28 women and 14 men). The examination results showed that the systolic pressure before the antihypertensive exercise was 178.86 mmHg, which decreased to 169.89 mmHg after the exercise, while the diastolic pressure decreased from 102.75 mmHg to 96.02 mmHg. In addition, the pretest and posttest results showed an increase in elderly knowledge about hypertension from 42.86% to 90.48%, as well as an understanding of the importance of antihypertensive exercises from 28.57% to 80.95%. This activity succeeded in increasing the knowledge and awareness of the elderly about hypertension and antihypertensive exercises, and showed a significant decrease in blood pressure. It is hoped that similar activities can be continued periodically to improve the health of the elderly and encourage them to be more active in maintaining health through antihypertensive exercises and routine blood pressure checks.
