Abstract

This qualitative case study investigated the use and perceptions of translanguaging in English for Law courses within Islamic Law programs at a university in Indonesia. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews with 30 students and 3 English lecturers. The findings reveal that both students and teachers actively engaged in translanguaging, drawing on a repertoire of languages, including English, Indonesian, Bugis (the local language), and Arabic. Translanguaging served multiple pedagogical functions, including facilitating conceptual understanding, promoting inclusivity, and enhancing student engagement. However, the study also highlighted the need for a balanced approach to translanguaging, ensuring adequate exposure to the target language (English) and clear code-switching practices. The implications of these findings for pedagogy, curriculum development, and teacher training are discussed. This study contributes to the growing body of literature on translanguaging in education and provides valuable insights for educators working in multilingual and multicultural contexts

Abstract

Abstract

Backward Learning Instruction (BLI) is a recommended instructional practice to apply for an extensive reading and listening program to become comprehensible meaning-focused input as an initial idea from the flipped-learning model and backward design. This study explored how backward learning instruction as an instructional strategy applies in the learning process; and how students perceive backward learning instruction for comprehensible meaning-focused input. The author used a mixed method, with the descriptive and statistical description of 45 students from the law department at the Sekolah Tinggi Ilmu Hukum Pengayoman Bone, which was selected using purposive sampling. A study of the document was conducted to compile the BLI model, and a Guttman scale questionnaire was provided to gain firm and precise answers on BLI implementation. Then, the data were analyzed. The result presented the BLI model within three steps: 1) Preparing class, 2) Backward learning instruction, and 3) Knowledge enrichment. This study also found that BLI as an instructional strategy for comprehensible meaning-focused input showed a high agreement among students with high and very high categories converted by the students' propensity to respond to a scale. As an implication, BLI has contributed to providing solutions for learning the reading and listening comprehension process in distance, blended, and autonomous learning. EFL teachers, learners, and material developers must consider BLI as learning instruction due to its positive impact on students' self-faced learning.

Abstract

Abstract

Abstract

The lack of attention given in scholarly research to the particular requirements of Public Administration has resulted in a knowledge deficit to suit students' interests in this discipline. Prior research has predominantly examined the quantitative dimensions of vocabulary acquisition while neglecting to adequately consider the qualitative aspects, including comprehension and language use, in a contextually appropriate manner. This study aims to fill in these knowledge deficits by investigating vocabulary themes or topics related to Public Administration, evaluating existing instructional approaches and challenges, and suggesting enhancements to bolster students' English language proficiency in Public Administration. The study employs a qualitative methodology, including an open-ended questionnaire and in-depth interviews with four lecturers and 100 first-year students from three universities in South Sulawesi, Indonesia. The findings revealed that the English for Public Administration curriculum requires a diverse vocabulary of topics from administration, management, and governance to more nuanced areas such as economics, finance, taxation, social and ethics, technology and digitalization, leadership, and regulation and law. Various teaching and assessment strategies regarding instructional methods, including interactive and collaborative methods, technology integration, and contextual learning, suggest the importance of engaging students with diverse and practically relevant content to prepare them for the multifarious nature of public sector roles. Students, however, found some challenges in the complexity of the Public Administration vocabulary, highlighting the need for tailoring educational strategies, such as project-based learning and vocabulary reinforcement techniques, to overcome these obstacles. The study's findings have substantial implications for policymakers, curriculum developers, and lecturers specializing in public administration education.
