Abstract

Academic writing is an essential competence for students in supporting their academic success and scientific development. One of the common challenges faced is the proper and systematic management of references. This community service activity was aimed at providing training on the use of the Mendeley application for students of Universitas Muslim Maros, particularly those from the Faculty of Teacher Training and Education, to enhance their skills in managing scientific references. The training was conducted online via the Zoom platform on May 12, 2025, at 10:00 WITA, with a total of 133 registered participants. The evaluation results showed that approximately 93,4% of participants reported acquiring new skills that are highly useful for writing their final projects and other scientific papers. This activity is expected to serve as a solution for strengthening students' academic literacy in the digital era.

Abstract

This study investigates student perceptions of short video warm-ups used at the beginning of classroom sessions in a higher education English for Professional Purposes (ESP) course. A total of 65 first-semester undergraduate students from seven academic disciplines participated in the study. Using a convergent mixed methods design, both quantitative data from Likert-scale evaluations and qualitative data from open-ended responses were analyzed. Quantitative findings indicated high levels of agreement that the videos increased motivation (M = 4.26), were relevant to the lesson topics (M = 4.26), and aided comprehension (M = 4.23). Thematic analysis of qualitative data revealed six key themes: emotional activation and improved learning atmosphere; cognitive orientation and topic relevance; preferences for engaging media formats; enhanced engagement through real-world connections; technical and language barriers; and suggestions for pedagogical improvement. Students emphasized that short, engaging, and relatable videos helped them transition into learning mode, made the class atmosphere more enjoyable, and supported their understanding of the material. They also expressed a desire for more consistent and interactive integration of video content. The study concludes that short video warm-ups, when well designed and pedagogically aligned, can serve as effective tools for enhancing both cognitive and affective dimensions of learning. The findings offer practical implications for instructors, curriculum designers, and institutions seeking to foster active and student-centered learning environments through digital media.

Abstract

This study investigated student perceptions of teaching effectiveness in an English for Specific Purposes (ESP) course using a mixed methods approach. The research involved 65 first-semester undergraduate students from seven academic disciplines at a private University in Indonesia. Data were collected through an end-of-semester evaluation form consisting of Likert-scale items and open-ended questions. Quantitative findings indicated that students perceived the course as most effective in enhancing their reading and vocabulary skills. Other language areas—speaking, writing, listening, and grammar—also received favorable ratings, although with more variability. Thematic analysis of qualitative responses revealed that students attributed their progress to specific instructional strategies such as text-based reading tasks, vocabulary drills, and interactive speaking activities. They also highlighted grammar instruction as helpful for improving sentence construction and clarity. Suggestions for improvement included increased integration of technology, hybrid learning modes, and more personalized support. Overall, the study demonstrated that student evaluations can serve as assessment tools and reflective instruments to inform and enhance teaching practice. The study offered a nuanced perspective on how ESP instructional strategies influenced student learning by combining numerical and narrative data. These findings support using student feedback as a dynamic resource for pedagogical development.

Abstract

In response to the demand for higher education institutions to internationalize their campuses and strengthen their students' global collaboration, Sekolah Tinggi Ilmu Farmasi (STIFA) Makassar has made English language proficiency a requirement for graduation. The evidence is bypassing the TOEFL test held by universities. This study aims to analyze the students' learning styles and expectations for studying English in TOEFL class and the students' difficulties. This study was conducted at one of the Pharmacy campuses in Central Indonesia, Makassar, South of Sulawesi, namely the Sekolah Tinggi Ilmu Farmasi (STIFA) Makassar with 62 people as a population. While using purposive sampling, there were 20 people chosen as a sample. From this research, we found that 60% of students prefer the auditory learning style and 100% of students expect the teacher to teach combined in English and Indonesian, gives many exercises, and provides new vocabulary in every meeting. In addition, 65 % of students select Structure and Written Expression as the most challenging skill in TOEFL class.

Abstract

This study explores the integration of the Corpus of Contemporary American English (COCA) in teaching academic collocations and phrases in English for Specific and Academic Purposes (ESP/EAP) settings. Conducted with 15 first-semester undergraduate students in Indonesia, the six-week classroom-based action research employed corpus-based instructional tasks to develop students’ lexical awareness and academic language proficiency. Data were collected through classroom observations, student writings, questionnaires, and semi-structured interviews. The findings show notable improvement in students’ use of academic collocations and discipline-specific phrases, reflected in increased accuracy and fluency in both writing and speaking. Learners reported that COCA supported them in identifying more natural and context-appropriate word combinations, boosting their confidence and academic expression. Initial challenges with the COCA interface and corpus navigation were mitigated through instructional scaffolding. Over time, students demonstrated increased autonomy and began using COCA for independent and collaborative learning. The study affirms the pedagogical value of corpus linguistics for novice ESP learners and highlights the importance of technical and teacher support in integrating corpus tools into curriculum design.

Abstract

This research analyzes volunteers' perspectives on the effects of the 'Merdeka Belajar Kampus Merdeka' (MBKM) initiative on higher education in Indonesia. The MBKM program signifies a substantial paradigm shift in Indonesia's educational policy, emphasizing a comprehensive, adaptable, and pragmatic approach to learning. The initiative aims to facilitate the transition from theoretical academic knowledge to hands-on competencies required in the workforce, promoting career advancement, experiential learning, and individual maturation. This study employs qualitative analysis of volunteer narratives to examine the perceptions, motivations, and obstacles to implementing the MBKM program. The results underscore the program's efficacy in cultivating social responsibility and community engagement, facilitating diverse and global learning opportunities, and augmenting professional and personal competencies. Nevertheless, obstacles to adjustment, obtaining resources, and managing academic obligations are also apparent. This study emphasizes the necessity for increased resources, support systems, and flexible policies to address the changing demands of education. This study enhances the scholarly conversation surrounding educational reform and volunteerism in Indonesia by providing valuable insights to inform future policy discussions and educational advancements.

Abstract

This study aims to explore the results of empirical research on the corpus linguistics approach in identifying or building vocabulary in English for Specific Purposes (ESP). In ESP, the corpus-based approach has been used in determining specific vocabulary that learners will need within a particular discipline. This study tried to determine how the corpus identifies word lists through a brief overview of the article's reviewed subject. Forty selected articles of 2028 were collected by journals indexed by Scopus, Google Scholars, and Crossref from 1980-April 2022. The results have shown that studies on corpus in ESP are still less attractive among researchers than studies in other fields. There is a lack of publications from year to year, and it even tends to decrease. In addition, many different fields of study have not been the author's concern in building a corpus, such as administration, anthropology, or others. Also, needs analysis and expert validation seem to be ignored, yet they are essential indicators in designing teaching products. So, for further research, it is highly recommended to consider the gaps mentioned to conduct more studies related to corpus compilation in ESP, especially in several fields of science that have never been done before.
