Abstract

Analgesics are substances that reduce or eliminate pain without causing loss of consciousness. Traditional medicines are considered safer than synthetic drugs. One plant with potential as an analgesic is the red shoot plant (Syzygium myrtifolium Walp). This plant contains flavonoids, anthocyanins, phenolics, and triterpenoids. This study aimed to determine the analgesic activity of ethanol extract of red shoot leaves (EPM) in male white mice. The analgesic effect was obtained through the writhing test using 1% glacial acetic acid induction. Twenty male white mice were divided into 5 treatment groups, including negative control (0.5% Na CMC), treatment 1 (EPM 3.7 mg/kgBW), treatment 2 (EPM 7.4 mg/kgBW), and treatment 3 (EPM 14.8 mg/kgBW), and positive control (mefenamic acid 500 mg/70 kgBW). All mice were given treatment according to their respective groups. After 30 minutes, all mice were induced with 1% glacial acetic acid at a dose of 10 ml/kgBW intraperitoneally. Then, the number of writhes was observed every 5 minutes for 60 minutes. The average number of writhes data was analyzed using ANOVA and Tukey HSD tests. The results showed that treatment groups 2 (7.40 mg/kgBW) and 3 (14.80 mg/kgBW) showed analgesic activity in male white mice induced by 1% acetic acid. The best dose was 14.80 mg/kgBW with writhing protection of 34.74% and analgesic efficacy of 45.59% compared to mefenamic acid.

Abstract

The increasing incidence of infections and drug resistance has led scientists to seek approaches towards medicinal plants that are potentially effective against many microorganisms. Therefore, this study was planned to assess the antibacterial activity of 3 mangrove species (Scyphipora hydrophylaceae C.F.Gaertn., Lumnitzera littorea (Jack) Voigt and Avicennia alba Blume) against Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli bacteria. This study used the disc diffusion method to measure the diameter of inhibition at several concentrations of mangrove leaf ethanol extracts, namely 15%, 10%, 5%, 2.5%, 1.25% and 0.625% b/v as well as positive control cefadroxil for bacteria and DMSO as negative control. The test results showed that ethanol extracts of mangosteen leave Scyphipora hydrophylaceae C.F.Gaertn and Lumnitzera littorea (Jack) Voigt had a solid response to Escherichia coli bacteria and moderate potential against S. Aureus bacteria—no antibacterial activity against both test bacteria for Avicennia alba mangrove. This study concludes that Scyphipora hydrophylaceae C.F.Gaertn and Lumnitzera littorea (Jack) Voigt have potent antibacterial activity against Escherichia coli, but Avicennia alba has no antibacterial activity.

Abstract

Background: Cinnamon leaves (Cinnamomum burmanni (Nees & T.Nees) Blume.) are natural plants used as traditional medicine because they have secondary metabolite compounds, namely flavonoids, tannins, saponins, alkaloids, and triterpenoids. Objective: This study aims to determine the total flavonoid compound levels found in cinnamon leaves (Cinnamomum burmanni (Nees & T.Nees) Blume.). Methods:The extraction method used is the infusa method using aquadest solvent. Qualitative analysis used phytochemical screening and quantitative analysis used is by UV Vis Spectrophotometry with standard comparison using quercetin. Results: For parametric data analysis using One Way Annova analysis. The results of phytochemical screening examination of cinnamon leaves (Cinnamomum burmanni (Nees & T.Nees) Blume.) are positive for flavonoid compounds with the total flavonoid compound content using the UV-Vis Spectrophotometry method is 0.5691 mgQE/g, and the results of parametric data analysis using One Way Annova analysis show a significant value of flavonoid content of 1.000> 0.05. This indicates that the flavonoid levels in the sample are relatively stable and homogeneous, so the treatments applied did not result in significant variation. This may suggest that the treatment factors in the study did not significantly affect the amount of flavonoids contained in the cinnamon leaf extract. Thus, the detected flavonoid content is likely more influenced by the natural characteristics of the plant rather than by the treatments tested. Conclusion: The cinnamon leaf (Cinnamomum burmanii) showed a positive result for the presence of flavonoid compounds.
