Abstract

The development of digital technology has resulted in an increased emphasis on students' academic literacy skills, particularly in the management of scientific references. However, preliminary observations suggest that 80% of students at Patompo University in Makassar are unfamiliar with reference management applications such as Mendeley and continue to use manual methods, which can potentially result in citation errors and plagiarism. A community service programme was implemented in the form of reference management training using Mendeley. The objective of this programme was to improve students' understanding, technical skills, and awareness of academic ethics. The implementation methods employed in this programme comprised lectures, question and answer sessions, simulations, and hands-on practice, with an emphasis on installation, metadata management, automatic citation, and bibliography compilation. Post-training reflections demonstrated that 90% of participating students experienced a significant increase in digital literacy, confidence in using the application, and commitment to its continued use. This finding indicates that practical training is an effective method for cultivating a culture of ethical and responsible scientific writing.

Abstract

This research examines the importance of understanding cultural context in comprehending English-language economic texts for Development Economics students through a systematic literature review approach. Economic globalization demands that students not only master English technically but also understand the cultural dimensions underpinning economic concepts. This study analyzes 35 articles from reputable databases to identify gaps in the understanding of cultural context within economic English learning. The results indicate that an understanding of cultural context significantly enhances competency in interpreting economic texts, cross-cultural business decision-making, and the capacity for development policy analysis. The developed theoretical framework integrates the theory of intercultural communicative competence with the English for Specific Purposes approach. The findings provide practical implications for the development of a culturally responsive curriculum and learning strategies for economic English. Abstract

This study investigates how economics students use context clues and digital strategies to enhance vocabulary acquisition and reading comprehension in English for Specific Purposes (ESP). The research aims to identify students’ inference patterns, compare success rates across different types of clues, and analyse the relationship between contextual inference skills and overall comprehension. Using a quantitative descriptive design, data were collected from 85 randomly selected undergraduate economics students who completed ESP reading and vocabulary tasks through both printed and digital formats. Results indicate that students achieved the highest success with definition clues (72.4%) and contrast clues (68.9%), while example clues were the most challenging (47.2%). Pearson correlation analysis revealed a strong positive relationship between the utilisation of context clues and reading comprehension (r = 0.78, p < 0.01). Regression analysis further confirmed that definition and contrast clues were the strongest predictors of comprehension performance. Findings suggest that combining explicit instruction in context clue recognition with digital scaffolding—such as pop-up glossaries and annotation tools—can significantly improve ESP reading outcomes. These strategies help learners engage actively with specialised economic texts, enhance inferencing accuracy, and foster independent vocabulary learning. The study concludes that integrating digital literacy with traditional reading strategies is essential for developing effective ESP pedagogy in the digital era, supporting both linguistic and professional competencies of economics students.

Abstract

The integration of English for Specific Purposes (ESP) in the field of economics within the EFL (English as a Foreign Language) context has become increasingly crucial in preparing students to navigate the global economic landscape. This narrative literature review examines recent developments in economic English instruction for EFL students during the period 2019-2024. Through systematic analysis of relevant publications, this study identifies key methodological trends, technological innovations, persistent challenges, and effective solutions in economic ESP instruction. The findings reveal a significant shift toward task-based learning approaches, increased integration of digital technology, and emphasis on authentic materials. Primary challenges include specialized vocabulary acquisition, academic writing skills, and confidence in professional communication. This review concludes with recommendations for educators and researchers in developing more effective economic ESP curricula.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the factors influencing women's employment opportunities in the context of the demographic bonus in South Sulawesi Province. The demographic bonus is characterized by an increasing proportion of the working-age population and is expected to strengthen economic development, particularly through women's active participation in the labor market. Multiple linear regression was used to test the influence of internet access (X1), minimum wages (X2), women's productive age (X3), average years of schooling (X4), access to workforce training (X5), and the gender development index (X6) on women's employment opportunities. The results indicate that internet access, women's productive age, and access to workforce training significantly affect women's employment opportunities in South Sulawesi, while minimum wages, average years of schooling, and the gender development index do not.

Abstract

This study examined how speaking self-efficacy and speaking proficiency developed through Communicative Language Teaching (CLT) in an undergraduate EFL classroom at STAI Ma’arif Magetan, Indonesia. A qualitative case study design was employed. Data were collected from repeated classroom observations across an eight-session CLT unit, semi-structured interviews with twelve students, instructional documents, and students’ speaking task recordings rated descriptively with an analytic speaking rubric. Observational evidence showed increasing student talk time, frequent pair and group interaction, and growing negotiation of meaning as tasks progressed from information-gap exchanges to problem-solving discussions and short presentations with Q&A. Thematic analysis revealed five pathways of self-efficacy growth: mastery experiences from successful task completion, peer support, supportive feedback, systematic scaffolding, and emerging self-regulation strategies. Performance evidence from recordings indicated noticeable improvement in fluency and interactive communication, alongside gradual gains in intelligibility and vocabulary range, while grammatical accuracy improved more modestly. Triangulation across interviews, observations, and performance samples suggested a positive cycle in which higher self-efficacy increased willingness to speak and persistence, thereby expanding practice opportunities and strengthening proficiency. The study concludes that CLT, when implemented as a coherent system of progressive tasks, scaffolding, and constructive feedback, can effectively support confidence-building and speaking development in higher-education EFL settings. Pedagogically, instructors are encouraged to sequence tasks from low-stakes interaction to higher-stakes performance, provide language support, and use feedback that prioritizes intelligibility and next steps. Limitations include a single-site case and a short observation window; future studies may compare multiple classes and track longer-term retention of gains.
