Abstract

This investigation examines the phenomenon of foreign language reading anxiety experienced by first-semester Economics Development students at Universitas Negeri Makassar when engaging with specialized English economics texts. The research employed a modified version of Zoghy's Foreign Language Reading Anxiety (FLRA) scale to collect data from 95 respondents, measuring anxiety manifestations across four critical dimensions: text-related anxiety, language-related anxiety, comprehension-related anxiety, and performance-related anxiety. Statistical analysis demonstrated that these Economics Development students encounter moderate to high anxiety levels overall, with particularly elevated anxiety regarding performance evaluation and assessment situations. These findings highlight the necessity for language instructors at Universitas Negeri Makassar to develop and implement strategically targeted interventions addressing reading anxiety, with particular emphasis on alleviating performance-related stress while simultaneously enhancing linguistic competence. The study provides valuable insights into the specific challenges confronted by Economics Development students at Universitas Negeri Makassar as they navigate discipline-specific foreign language materials essential to their academic development.

Abstract

This study investigates the perceptions of Development Economics students regarding their experiences reading English economic texts. The research examined attitudes, challenges, and strategies of 109 first-semester students (31 males, 78 females) enrolled in an English for Economics course. Using a mixed-methods approach, data was collected through a comprehensive perception survey and analyzed using both quantitative and qualitative methods. Results reveal that students perceive economic texts as highly challenging primarily due to specialized terminology, complex sentence structures, and the dual difficulty of mastering both language and content simultaneously. While students acknowledge the importance of English economic texts for their professional development, they report moderate confidence in their reading abilities. The study provides practical implications for English for Specific Purposes (ESP) instruction in economics programs and suggests approaches to enhance students' engagement with English economic texts.

Abstract

This study examines the effect of economic growth and infrastructure development on income inequality in Indonesia during the period of 2011 to 2022. To estimate the relationships between variables, the Ordinary Least Squares (OLS) technique was employed, accompanied by diagnostic tests to ensure the validity of the estimations, including residual normality, absence of multicollinearity, and absence of autocorrelation issue. The findings show that the model constructed is simultanously significant in explaining the relationship, with a relatively high degree of determination for the independent variables. Economic growth has a positive effect on income inequality, indicating that the achieved economic growth has not yet been accompanied by equitable income distribution among the population. Conversely, road infrastructure development demonstrates a significant negative effect on income inequality. This implies that improving access and connectivity through optimal road development holds substantial potential in reducing income disparities across Indonesia.

Abstract

This study aims to explore digital habitus and the transformation of social interaction in the use of smartphones among students at MAN 2 Model Mataram. The approach is a mixed method, combining quantitative and qualitative methods through a case study design. Data collection instruments include observation, interviews, and questionnaires. The results show that smartphone usage among students is very high, with 56.5% frequently using them at school and 88.9% accessing non-academic content during class hours. Although most students claim to use smartphones for studying, many also use them for entertainment and social media, affecting their concentration and leading to peer pressure. This repeated usage forms a digital habitus, a new dispositional pattern that replaces direct social interaction with screen-based interaction. As a result, social relationships among students become more individualistic and weaken collective values within the school environment. The main contribution of this research lies in strengthening the concept of digital habitus within the educational context and highlighting the importance of digital literacy as a strategy for character development in the technological era. The study recommends that school policies not only restrict but also guide technology’s ethical and educational use.

Abstract

This research examines the translation capabilities of development economics students at Universitas Negeri Makassar when employing artificial intelligence-based translation tools for economic literature. As AI technology becomes increasingly prevalent in academic and professional environments, evaluating students' proficiency in utilizing these technological resources has emerged as essential for educational strategy formulation and skill enhancement initiatives. A quantitative survey methodology was implemented involving 107 students from the development economics program to measure translation precision, operational efficiency, and analytical assessment abilities during AI-supported translation processes. The findings indicate considerable disparities in skill levels, whereby students exhibited superior competence in fundamental translation activities while encountering difficulties with sophisticated economic vocabulary and contextual subtleties. The outcomes demonstrate that although AI-powered tools improve translation velocity and resource availability, systematic instructional frameworks are required to optimize their pedagogical value. This investigation adds to the expanding scholarly discourse on AI incorporation within translation pedagogy and offers actionable insights for academic program enhancement in economics education.
