Abstract

Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) has become a serious problem around the world. The pandemic has given several bad impacts, especially in the medical operation. Hospitals are facing problems in which they are lacking the patient bed facility. The objective of this paper is to propose an adjustable medical bed that can be folded as a chair for COVID-19 patients. This foldable bed is employing the hydraulic system as the lifting mechanism. It can raise up from 0.62 to 1 meter height and withstand loads up to 400 kg. Other supporting features and mechanisms will be explained in this paper. Furthermore, the theoretical strength analyses of this proposed design are conducted under the static and fatigue loading. In the static analysis, the safety factor due to the normal and shear stress is 7.5 based on the Maximum Shear Stress failure criterion theorem. Meanwhile, in the fatigue analysis, the safety factor based on the Modified Goodman and ASME-Eliptic criteria are 3.6 and 3.9, respectively. The infinite life of this design is predicted. In addition, this paper is expected to be used as a reference for developing a more reliable design for COVID-19 patients due to lack of bed facilities.

Abstract

The trend of using electric vehicles is increasing. With the increasing use of electric vehicles, it is necessary to master the key technologies used by electric vehicles, one of which is batteries, especially lithium-ion batteries (LiB). There are many important components in the LiB, one of which is a separator that serves to block short circuits between the anode and cathode of the battery while providing a way for ion exchange to continue. This article summarizes important information related to battery separator technology. The information includes the materials that have been used in commercial products and those of under research and development. In addition, the method of fabricating the separator using conventional methods and 3D printing is discussed. Finally, this article also discusses how several studies perform performance tests on separator materials. Keywords: battery separator, fabrication, materials, performance test, lithium-ion battery.

Abstract

This paper reveals the mechanical behavior of thin-walled columns with pre-folded patterns subjected to compressive loading. The column specimens (Polylactic Acid) are fabricated using Fused Deposition Modeling 3D printer and subjected to quasi-static compressive loading to investigate their mechanical behavior (by modifying the specimens' cross-section patterns and folding angles). The column specimens are simulated by finite element analysis to understand how the stress distribution and local deformation affecting the stiffness, strength, and overall deformation. The experiments showed that introducing the pre-folded pattern in a thin-walled column with different cross-sections can dramatically lower its structural stiffness (85%) and compressive strength (69%), but increase its deformability (115%), which is good agreement with numerical simulation. The variation of cross-section patterns and pre-folding angle could effectively modify the compressive mechanical behavior. Moreover, the results demonstrate how the FDM 3D Printing method can be used in fabricating a thin-walled column with irregular shapes and then to modify its deformability. This finding can be useful for designing any complex structures requiring specific stiffness and deformation such as suspension devices, prosthetic devices in biomechanics, and robotic structures.

Abstract

The existence of top burrs in micro-scale features produced by milling process can deteriorate the surface quality of a product. Ductile metals, such as aluminum alloys, are prone to suffer from top burrs formation after a slot-milling process. A brief review on the state-of-the-art of burr removal process in micro-scale milling is provided in this paper. Various deburring methods were reportedly able to remove the burrs in micro-scale features, however a much simpler method is still needed. In the present work, a deburring process by stainless steel end brushing is introduced for aluminum mould used in microfluidic device fabrication. The micro-scale features are produced by slot-milling process followed by the deburring process. The deburred moulds are then visually observed using optical microscope and Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) and the average surface roughness and its features profile are measured using 3D Laser Scanning Confocal Microscope. As a result, the proposed deburring method can successfully remove the top burrs, as indicated by a height reduction of about 21% due to the removal action by the brush. Hence, a burr-free embossing mould with complex shape channel features can be produced by milling and by applying a simple deburring process using stainless steel end brush.

Abstract

The failure of asphalt pavement occurs due to heavy traffic loads and weather conditions such as humidity, temperature, and UV radiation. To address or minimize these failures, significant efforts have been made in recent years to improve the properties of asphalt materials, ultimately enhancing field performance, and extending the lifespan of pavements. Asphalt with plastic modification is considered one of the most suitable and popular approaches. Plastic offers several advantages and is generally known to improve stiffness at high temperatures, although some types are more susceptible to phase separation. Therefore, it is necessary to use the right methods, temperatures, and proportions when designing plastic asphalt mixes to produce a homogeneous mixture. Plastic mixing with asphalt blends is done through two methods: the dry mixing method and the wet mixing method. The ideal amount of plastic added to the mix should modify the asphalt blend to make it more resistant to rutting, fatigue cracking, thermal cracking, and moisture resistance. Failure to determine the correct plastic dosage can lead to negative effects on pavement performance. In general, incorporating plastic waste into asphalt mixes has shown improvements in performance metrics such as stiffness, resistance to cracking, and fatigue resistance. The result of the asphalt and plastic mixture is an increase in stability, making the mixture stronger in bearing loads. Adding plastic waste to the mix makes it stiffer, resulting in a higher MR value, thus providing better resistance to permanent deformation compared to conventional mixtures. Additionally, in wheel tracking tests, the asphalt-plastic mixture reduced rutting depth by 29% compared to conventional mixtures. Similarly, in fatigue testing, the asphalt-plastic mixture yielded a higher load cycle value, making it more resistant to repeated loads. This article explains the details of using plastic in asphalt mixes to enhance asphalt performance and road durability. Various types of plastics, including PET, HDPE, LDPE, PVC, LDPE, PP, and PS, have been successfully used to modify asphalt. However, each type has its advantages and disadvantages, as discussed comprehensively in this journal. Essentially, the utilization of plastic waste in asphalt blends will help reduce the need for landfill disposal, decrease dependence on non-renewable resources, and expand options for asphalt pavement construction.

Abstract

This study aims to design and fabricate a prototype of massage chair made of corrugated cardboard materials and evaluate its structural strength. It could be a pioneering study as no one had manifested or discussed it before. The prototype is currently made with dimensions of approximately 60 ´ 50 ´ 100 cm, consisting of 6 cardboard components, affords a reflexology sensation from solid rubber balls, and provides reclinable features at the backrest and footrest. The most prominent benefit of this cardboard massage chair compared to the commercialized ones is environmentally friendly and lightweight products. Moreover, the constructed component can be disassembled and folded, making it a portable massage chair. From the strength evaluation, the cardboard massage chair can still endure a load of 50 kg to the prototype’s seat, backrest, and footrest. However, multi loading directions (e.g., vertical, longitudinal, lateral), stress concentration, and fluctuating person weight would generate tremendous stress and lead to a more substantial possibility of damage and failures on the cardboard after several testing cycles. Therefore, further improvement processes should be investigated to develop an optimized version of cardboard massage chair in the future.

Abstract

Food preparation is one of the longest and the most time consuming part in cooking a food. In the preparation phase, the food ingredients are often needed to be cut into cube shape or stick shape. Besides that, most of the small food industry needs to serve a lot of customers while having limited number of workers, causing the workers to be tired even before the cooking process begin. For this reason, this paper proposes a design idea of a cutting tool that can cut food ingredients into cube and stick shape. This design is also completed with the strength analysis to evaluate the components’ safety for applied force of 50 N. Furthermore, the strength analysis was done by a theoretical approach of static and fatigue loading. According to the analysis, the cutting tool has a safety of more than 3.7 for static loading and 2.14 for fatigue loading. This paper is expected to be used as a reference to create a cutting tool that can help workers in Indonesia.

Abstract

A school library is important in education, especially in high schools to support day-to-day operations. The purpose of this community service is to develop and install a solar-powered Library Information System for the State Highschool No. 6 Cirebon (SMA Negeri 6 Cirebon), Indonesia, in which the existing library operations were done manually. First, for the library database server, a small-size Raspberry Pi is utilized with a SLiMS library automation system installed and run over the school’s local network. Then, a sufficient energy resource is required to run the computer system; in this case, to support running the Raspberry Pi device. For this, a solar panel set-up is installed at the school to generate the electric power as the renewable energy resouce. Packages of solar panels with the battery are easily found in the online Indonesian marketplace, and this made the implementation of solar energy could become faster. In addition, a series of academic seminars is also held to support the library system operation as well as the school teachers.
