Abstract

The corrosive coastal environment will result in a high corrosion rate for any equipment installed there. This is due to the constant exposure to saltwater, high humidity levels, and strong winds. Therefore, it is crucial to use corrosion-resistant materials and regularly maintain the equipment to ensure its longevity in such an environment. One method to reduce the rate of corrosion is to pay close attention to the manufacturing parameters of these components, one of which is the face milling process. The aim of this study is investigating the effect of face milling process with different dept of cut using minimum quantity lubrication method with corn oil as a renewable vegetable cutting fluid. In this study AISI 316L stainless steel was face milled using HAAS VF-2 CNC machine. The depth of cut is varied between 0.2 mm, 0.3 mm, 0.4 mm, 0.5 mm, and 0.6 mm. The results demonstrated that the greater the depth of cut, the greater the surface roughness value that will be generated. It is resulting in increment in the corrosion rate value.

Abstract

A coating is widely applied to protect base material during contact with surrounding. One important application in engineering is to protect a boat hull. The coating is applied to boat hull to prevent a decrease of mechanical properties of base materials particularly with corrosive seawater. Composite coating is applied since the composite coating provides better protection compared to paint coating. Additionally, sandblasting prior to composite coating is worked out to improve the mechanical properties of the coating. This work investigated the influence of the projection angle of the sandblasting process on the shear strength of the coated surface. The projection angle of sandblasting was varied from 30 to 90 °. The result shows that a higher projection angle decreases the strain strength of the coating surface. The experiment work showed that the shear strength of 30°, 45 °, 60 °, and 90°projection angle are 1.02, 0.66, 0.38, and 0.24 MPa, respectively.

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of immersion time of NaOH at a temperature of 60-70 ℃ in wulung bamboo fibers on the tensile strength of the epoxy matrix composites. Wulung bamboo fibers (Gigantichloa Atroviolacea) have the potential to be used as reinforced in composites because they have high strength and are widely grown in Indonesia. In this study, bamboo wulung fiber reinforcement was used without treatment and with variations, soaking time 30 minutes, 60 minutes, and 90 minutes in 6% NaOH solution with a temperature of 60-70 ℃. The composite manufacturing method used was vacuum assisted resin infusion and the standard composite specimen used as a tensile test was ASTM D638-01. The results showed that the longer the immersion time resulted in a rougher topography of the fiber surface which caused the composite tensile strength to increase due to the better mechanical interlocking between the fibers and the epoxy resin matrix. The wettability results on the fibers also show that the wetness between the fibers and the epoxy resin matrix is getting better, which is shown from the droplet contact angle on the resulting fibers. The highest composite tensile strength was obtained at 90 minutes immersion time of 169.765 MPa followed by immersion time of 60 minutes of 123.2 MPa, immersion time of 5 minutes of 81.7 MPa and without treatment of 71.6 MPa. Based on the results of the macro photo shows that the treatment given will reduce the failure of the pull out and debonding defects on the composite fracture.

Abstract

Of many manufacturing processes, sand casting is one of the most widely used since there is no size limit of the workpiece. Big size product can be carried out at an affordable cost. In its process, sand casting comprises interconnected and complex series. If some of the processes are not properly carried out e.g. during solidification, will result in defects in the casting products. Simulation is an important method currently since it can model the entire metal casting process and show the dynamic character of the casting scheme. In this study, CAD is used for a 3D design on casting simulation. In this study, the grain size of molded sand, material quality and other process parameters were considered identical to all design schemes. This study aims to investigate the effect of varied design and dimensions of the gating system. It was found in this study that porosity and improper solidification were related to the improper gating and riser design.
