Abstract

Critical thinking skills are pivotal in science education, enabling students to comprehend complex concepts, solve problems effectively, and excel in academic assessments. This study aims to determine the effect of TPACK-based PBL in improving students' critical thinking skills in human anatomy. Using a quasi-experimental design with unequal control groups, the study involved 60 students from two classes (experimental and control groups) in East Lampung, Indonesia. Data analysis via one-way ANOVA revealed a statistically significant difference between the groups (p < 0.001), with the experimental group demonstrating superior performance (mean score: 86.02 vs. 50.10). The large effect size (Cohen's d = 6.13) underscores the transformative potential of TPACK-PBL in fostering analytical reasoning and cognitive flexibility. The integration of digital tools within the PBL framework bridges pedagogical strategies, technology applications, and content mastery, enabling students to engage with authentic real-world problems. These findings align with constructivist theory, which emphasizes the active construction of knowledge through problem-solving contexts. These findings contribute to a new pedagogical model that synergizes TPACK and PBL, offering actionable insights for curriculum developers and educators seeking to foster critical thinking in complex biology topic.

Abstract

The implementation of diagnostic assessments in the Independent Curriculum is a crucial step in mapping students' initial abilities and designing appropriate learning strategies. This study aims to identify obstacles to the implementation of diagnostic assessments in deep learning-based biology learning in public senior high schools in Bandar Lampung City, encompassing the planning, implementation, and follow-up stages. The study used a descriptive qualitative approach with a purposive sampling technique. The sample consisted of three public senior high schools, four biology teachers, and 69 tenth-grade students studying Biodiversity. Data were obtained through interviews, observations, questionnaires, and documentation. Data were analyzed through data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion drawing. The results showed that the implementation of diagnostic assessments was not optimal. Only two schools had implemented cognitive and non-cognitive diagnostic assessments, while one school had not implemented them at all. The main obstacles lay in limited school facilities and the low level of socialization regarding the Independent Curriculum, particularly the implementation of diagnostic assessments in innovative, deep learning-oriented biology learning. However, limited understanding and institutional support remained a significant obstacle. This study recommends improving teacher training, providing supporting facilities, and implementing more systematic assessment follow-up policies

Abstract

Quality education plays a crucial role in shaping students to become critical thinkers, independent learners, and scientifically literate individuals. However, suboptimal instructional models continue to hinder the development of students’ science literacy and self-regulation skills. This study aims to investigate the effect of the SelfOrganized Learning Environment (SOLE) model assisted by Google Sites on students' science literacy and self-regulation abilities. A quantitative approach with a quasi-experimental design was employed, and samples were selected purposively from Grade XI students. Data were collected through post-tests and questionnaires administered at the end of the learning process. The results show that the implementation of the SOLE model facilitated active student engagement, encouraged independent learning management, and promoted effective use of digital learning resources. Students responded positively to the learning process, demonstrating high enthusiasm and increased autonomy in organizing their learning. These findings suggest that the SOLE model assisted by Google Sites has a positive impact on enhancing students’ science literacy and self-regulation. This model offers a promising alternative learning strategy aligned with the demands of 21st-century education.

Abstract

Critical thinking skills and digital literacy are essential competencies for students to face the challenges of the 21st century. These skills enable learners to analyze information effectively, solve complex problems, and use technology responsibly in various contexts. However, in many classrooms, these competencies are often underdeveloped due to the predominance of conventional, teacher-centered learning methods that do not actively engage students in problem-solving or technology integration. This study aims to analyze the effect of the Problem Based Learning (PBL) model assisted by Canva on the critical thinking skills and digital literacy of tenth-grade students in Biology at SMA Negeri 1 Tanjung Bintang. The research employed a quantitative approach with a quasi-experimental design, specifically a pretest-posttest control group design, to compare the performance of students in two learning conditions. The population consisted of 359 students, with a sample of 36 students in class X.1 as the experimental group using PBL assisted by Canva, and 36 students in class X.2 as the control group using the Discovery Learning model. Instruments included an essay-based critical thinking skills test and a digital literacy questionnaire developed based on established indicators. Both instruments underwent validity and reliability testing prior to use. Data were analyzed using the Independent T-test with SPSS version 25 after testing for normality and homogeneity. The results showed a significant effect of the PBL model assisted by Canva on both critical thinking skills and digital literacy, indicated by significance values of less than 0.05 for both variables. Therefore, the PBL model assisted by Canva is proven effective in enhancing students’ higher-order thinking and digital competencies, making it a recommended approach for Biology learning and potentially for other science subjects in secondary education.
