Abstract

This research aims to identify the types and reasons of interruption uttered by host and the guests in Sarah Sechan talk show. To answer the objectives of the research, the researcher used conversation analysis approach. The data were the utterances that contain the interruption from the conversation in Sarah Secham Talk Show Net TV. The findings showed that there were four types of interruption employed by the host and guests, i.e. simple interruption, overlap interruption, silent interruption and butting-in interruption. From 56 data found in the talk show, simple interruption had the biggest number of occurrence with 37.50%. Simple interruption was the most appearing type in this talk show because each guest in every episode mainly gives his/her floor to the interrupter, which is the host, Sarah sechan even though his/her utterance was disrupted. The smallest number of interruption’s type was butting-in interruption with only 5.35%. The host or the guests seldom do butting-in interruption because they give a chance to the interrupter to deliver his/her message. To decide the reason of interruption, the writer looked at the context of the discussion between the host and the guests. The common reason was Completing with 35.71% and the other reason was showing agreement, seeking clarification, correcting, breaking up, and reject some point. From all of this reason the writer conclude that the interruptions in this talk-show were not violation. Keywords: conversation analysis; interruptionn; Sarah Sechan Talk

Abstract

This research dealt with Conversational Implicature in Dialogue of LayarTerkembang Novel By SutanTakdirAlisjahbana based on Grice’s Theory and it was aimed to finding out the types of conversational implicature, and to describe why the certain type of conversational implicature becomes dominant. This research was conducted by using descriptive qualitative method. The source of the data was taken from LayarTerkembang novelby SutanTakdirAlisjahbana, Then the dialogue of the novel as the data for the research. The findings showed that there were two types of conversational implicature in the procedures namely Generalized Conversational Implicature belong to 33 utterances and Particularized Conversational Implicature belong to 36 utterances. So, the most dominant types of conversational implicaturebetween the main characters in the novel was particularized conversational implicature because it more contained ambiguity, implicit meaning, conveyed an additional meaning, and their response did not relevant with every question and also it cannot easily to understand what he/she was talking about.

Abstract

This study deals with the differences between Black English and White American English based on the slang expressions as found in 10 songs by black and white rappers taken from YouTube videos. The analysis shows that the 5 songs by white rappers contain 394 sentences as compared with those of black rappers which is 493 sentences. The slang expressions are identified based on the existing theory and then they are categorized into the semantic change and morphological process  or formation of the expressions. It was found that there were more slang expressions in the Black English (39.95%) as compared with that of the White English (25.88%).There are more morphological processes in the black American English (6 of 8 types) compared with those of white American English (4 out of 8 types). The missing processes in black American English are borrowing and compounding whereas in the white American English are acronym, borrowing, backformation and conversion. The major or dominant processes in white American English are clipping (43.24%) and invention (41.44%) whereas in the black American English are clipping (30.02%) and invention (22.31%). At first sight it is difficult to understand the contents of the songs without referring to the explanations on the background and cultural values of the singers. The slang expressions which include a word, a phrase or a sentence contain the themes about sex, drugs and racialism among the black people in the United States. It is suggested that students who wanted to broaden their knowledge about English and its varieties should learn more about Black English. Keywords: morphological process; rappers; semantic changes; slang expression

Abstract

This study aimed at analyzing the kind of traits which represented by Baby in Baby Driver movie by Edgar Wright. The study of Characterization has been thrived in recent centuries. Personality Traits study in a movie is an interesting way to develop and identify some character in movies. The study used descriptive qualitative method. The data of this study were dialogues and statements from Baby which related to the Personality Traits theory in the movie script. The source of the data was Baby Driver movie. The findings of the Big Five theory analyzed by described the utterances and statements from Perlocutionary Act findings. It was found that there were five traits represented by Baby along the movie. They were (1) Introvert/Extrovert, (2) Neuroticism, (3) Conscientiousness, (4) Openness to Experience, and (5) Agreeableness. This study also proved that conflicts always happened in human being, especially teenager. At one time, a person chose to be introvert and in the next day he or she chose to be extrovert. Characterization learning was believed as a tool to differ one character of a movie or real-life individual from another.Keywords: Personality Traits, Speech Act, Perlocutionary Act.

Abstract

The study deals with the function of swearing in Donaldtrump’sutterances during the presidentialdebate. In this study, the researcher focuses onthe typesand the functionsof swearing inDonald Trump’s utterances during the presidential debate.The research used the descriptive qualitative method.The data were taken from video’s transcript ofAmerica presidential debate in 2016. There were three video’s transcript used as the sample, they were first presidential debate broadcasted on September 26th,2016, second presidential debate broadcasted on October 9th, 2016 and third presidential debate broadcasted on October 19th, 2016.Based on the analysis of data, the findings said that there were five types of swearing in Donald Trump’s utterances during a presidential debate in 2016 namely politic term, religious matter, death term, animal term, and sex or copulative term.However, there were three functions of swearing in Donald trump’s utterances during a presidential debate in 2016 namely descriptive swearing, abusive swearing, and idiomatic swearing. Keywords:Swearing, Taboo words, Sociological Approach, US presidential debate in 2016, Donald Trump

Abstract

This study deals with overlaps used in TV program Ini Talk Show on Net TV. The objectives of this study were to find out the types of overlap and describe the effects of overlap in TV program. This research was conducted by using descriptive qualitative method. The data were dialogues in Ini Talk Show special episode on October, 16th 2016 which was taken from YouTube. The findings indicated that there were two types of overlap in ‘Ini Talk Show’ and they were competitive (39,39%) and non competitive (60,60%). The competitive overlap contributes the effects such as provoke laughter and create new ideas. Keywords : overlaps, competitive, non-competitive, talk show, net TV

Abstract

This study dealt with defense mechanisms in Rambo : The First Blood Film in reference to semiotic. It employed descriptive qualitative research method. This study was aimed to analyze: (1) The kinds of defense mechanisms experienced by Rambo and (2)  why defense mechanism affected the utterance and action of Rambo in reference of semiotic. The data of this study were dialogues statement and figure that contained defense mechanisms. The theories were applied by the writer from Sigmund freud (1993) about defense mechanism and Chandler (2007) about semiotic. Based on the analysis, there were five kinds of defense mechanism used by Rambo, namely Denial (23,8%), Displacement (4,8%). Projection (42,9),  Repression (14,3%), and Reaction Formation (14,3%) where Rambo used projection defense mechanisms the most. Abstract

The research focused on logico-semantic relations in the Batak Toba wedding ceremony. The research aimed to discover the types of logico-semantic relations used in mangulosi and describe how they were realized in the Batak Toba wedding ceremony. The research was conducted by using the descriptive qualitative method. The data were taken from 2 wedding ceremony videos from 104 clause complexes selected. The study's finding showed that there were 9 of the logico-semantic relations types used in the Batak Toba wedding ceremony. They were consecutively hypotactic enhancement, hypotactic elaboration, paratactic enhancement, paratactic elaboration, hypotactic locution, paratactic extension, hypotactic extension, hypotactic idea, and paratactic idea. The logico-semantic relations were realized in mangulosi in Batak Toba wedding ceremony consecutively conjunction, verb, preposition, prepositional phrase, and adverbial clause which the utterances aimed about the message, prediction in the future, advice, hope, and blessing of hulahula for the bridegroom.

Abstract

The study deals with Feminism in Veronica Roth’s Movie “Divergent” from three women character. The objective of the study were to find out the types of feminism and the roles of women in Divergent movie. The research method of this study used qualitative research, relying on the analysis and description of previous researcher and the studies of feminism. The data of this study were the utterances that can be found out from the script of divergent movie. The data of this research were analyzed by using Tong’s theory. The researcher found there are 3 types of feminism in three women character in Divergent movie, they are : 5 statements that are included in liberal feminism, 12 statements are included in radical feminism, and 3 statements are included in anarchist feminism. The role of women that can be found from three women character in Divergent movie was the role of women in domestic sector and the role of women in public sector. Keywords: Divergent Feminism, Movie

Abstract

This study deals with euphemism in political speech of David Cameron about ISIS attacks. The objectives of the study were to find out the types of euphemsim used in DavidCameron’s speech on ISIS attacks and the reason why the most dominant types was choosen. The study was conducted by applying descriptive qualitative method.The data for this study were David Cameron political speech transcript in 20 July 2015, 14 November 2015, 2 December 2015, 5 february 2016. The source of the data was from United Kingdom govermentwebsite .The data were analyzedusing the theory of Allan and Burridge (1991). The findings of the study showed that the types of euphemism used in David Camerons political speech about ISIS attacks were: figurative expression(28,8%) ,circomlocution (15,5%), ommision (13,3%), ommision (13,3%) , hyperbole (11,1%), understatement (8,8%) ,flippancy(8,8%), abbreviation (8,8%),  borrowing (2,2%) and clipping (2,2%)  . Figurative expression as the most dominant type used by David Cameron because it make words in speech more organized as a nice thing to be spoken in public in order to convince people.Keywords: euphemism, euphemism types, speech, politic
