Abstract

This study aimed to evaluate the different levels of dietary protein and lysine supplementation on femur bone strength of Indonesian indigenous chickens at 12 weeks of age. The experimental materials used were DOC, without sex differentiation, reared up to 12 weeks of age. A completely randomized design (CRD) with a 2 × 3 factorial arrangement was used, with each treatment having four replicates and 10 chickens per experimental unit. The treatments applied were: P1L1 (17% protein + 0.6% lysine), P1L2 (17% protein + 0.7% lysine), P1L3 (17% protein + 0.8% lysine), P2L1 (14% protein + 0.6% lysine), P2L2 (14% protein + 0.7% lysine), and P2L3 (14% protein + 0.8% lysine). The experimental period started from the first day of observation to 12 weeks. Measured parameter: The main measured parameter was the femur bone strength after 12 weeks using an Electric Tensile Tester (Hun Ta Instruments CO. LTD, HT 8346). Also, histological examination of femur bones was conducted through a Scanning Electron Microscope-SEM at 100x. Data were subjected to ANOVA, and when there was a significant difference, Duncan's Multiple Range Test was conducted at a 5% significance level. No significant interaction was recorded between protein and lysine levels on femur bone strength at 12 weeks because P > 0.05. Conclusively, therefore, both dietary protein levels and lysine supplementation have no significant effect on bone strength in the finisher phase of growth.

Abstract

Stingless bee (Trigona sp.) cultivation presents significant potential for livestock diversification, improved food security, and rural economic development. Although this practice offers clear advantages, including low maintenance requirements, minimal environmental risk, and the high nutritional and commercial value of its honey, its adoption in Lempake Subdistrict, North Samarinda, East Kalimantan, remains limited. This situation is primarily due to a lack of community awareness and technical knowledge in apiculture. In response, a community service program was conducted on 10 May 2025 by lecturers from the Faculty of Agriculture, Mulawarman University, in collaboration with local farmer groups and supported by the Samarinda City Government. The program provided structured training through field visits, lectures, interactive discussions, and practical demonstrations at selected apiaries. Post-training evaluations showed a substantial improvement in participants’ understanding of colony management, hygienic honey harvesting, and the economic prospects of stingless bee products. Additionally, the program encouraged entrepreneurial interest and supported the development of value-added functional food products based on local resources. These findings indicate that targeted training and institutional collaboration are effective in promoting sustainable stingless beekeeping practices. Future initiatives should focus on continued technical support and the integration of apiculture products into local and digital markets to enhance competitiveness and economic impact.

Abstract

This community service program aims to enhance the productivity and welfare of local farmers through the optimization of male layer chicken production. Male chickens, often considered by-products of the laying hen industry, are generally overlooked and regarded as less economically viable. However, with the application of appropriate farming strategies, male chickens can become an important alternative source of protein to support food security. The methods implemented in this program include training on poultry management, the use of efficient locally-based feed, and the development of marketing strategies for the production output. The results of the program show a significant improvement in both productivity and the efficiency of male layer chicken farming among local farmers. With ongoing support, this program is expected to become a sustainable empowerment model in the small-scale livestock farming sector.

Abstract

Abstract

Lai (Durio kutejensis) is an endemic fruit of Kalimantan whose seeds have potential as a prebiotic source. This study aimed to identify the types of prebiotics in Lai fruit seeds and evaluate their potential for the growth of lactic acid bacteria. The study was conducted using a Completely randomized design (CRD) with four treatments and six replications. The parameters observed included proximate composition, resistant starch content, and total bacteria. Proximate analysis was carried out with three treatments: Lai seed flour (LSF), boiled Lai seeds (BLS), and roasted Lai seeds (RLS). In vitro tests used cultures of Lactobacillus plantarum and Lactobacillus casei treated with LSF at three levels (T1: 1%, T2: 2%, T3: 3%, and T0: without LSF). In conclusion, LSF has strong potential as a novel prebiotic source due to its resistant starch content and its ability to promote lactic acid bacterial growth. These preliminary results may serve as a basis for developing alternatives to antibiotic growth promoters (AGP) in poultry.

Abstract

Unpredictable climate fluctuations are now a challenge to the survival of livestock, one of the largest food commodities in Kalimantan. As one of Indonesia's largest island, straddled by the equator, has a tropical climate that frequently experiences culmination phenomena due to year-round sunlight. This study aims to analyze livestock suitable for breeding in Kalimantan, considering various criteria from a reproductive perspective. This review integrates recent empirical studies and regional data to evaluate reproductive responses, adaptive physiology, and management strategies of tropical cattle under the environmental stressors typical of Kalimantan. Data collection will present various data on livestock in extreme hot environments from various parts of the world, which can reproduce well as a reference for adoption in Kalimantan. The novelty of this study lies in its synthesis of tropical reproductive physiology with practical interventions specific to Kalimantan’s humid equatorial environment. Recommended adaptive strategies include selective breeding for heat-tolerant genotypes, nutritional fulfillment, water supply, and thermal housing management. Collectively, these measures strengthen the resilience of tropical cattle production systems, improving food security and sustainability under climate variability.
