Abstract

This study explores speech acts as pragmatic studies in the film "Yowes Ben 2". The researcher will investigate the many forms of speech acts and classify them focusing on the illocutionary categories employed in the film. This study follows John Rogers Searle's (1975) illocutionary action theory, which is assertive (the speaker's confidence in something), directive (something the listener should do), commissive (commitment to do something), expressive (expression of an attitude or feeling), and declarative (making changes such as pointing, stating, etc.)The research design implemented in this study is qualitative. Researchers gathered information by screening the film "Yowes Ben 2" and analyzing the different forms of speaking acts. Researchers employed content analysis to analyze their data. The steps in data analysis are as follows: the researcher will identify, analyze, interpret, and draw conclusions. In accordance to the data, expressive speech acts account for the greatest number of illocutionary acts (56%). Directive speech accounted for 38%, commissive speech 3%, representational speech 0%, and declarative speech 3%.

Abstract

This present study aims to observe: (1) the translation strategies used to translate phrasal verbs from English into the Indonesian language based on Baker’s theory; and (2) the translation assessment of phrasal verbs focusing on the accuracy and acceptability aspect based on Nababan’s parameter. This study is classified as a descriptive qualitative because the data consists of a lingual unit, specifically phrasal verbs. The analysis is also supported by simple calculations to determine the frequency and percentage of each translation strategy and its accuracy and acceptability. The data source is a Line Webtoon digital comic entitled Lore Olympus which analyzes the English and Indonesian phrasal verbs translation. The results show as follows: (1) there are only three translation strategies used, namely paraphrasing (95%), omitting the entire idiom (3.3%), and omitting a play on idiom (1.7%). (2) The translation of phrasal verbs is mostly considered accurate (93.3%) and fully acceptable (100%). Based on the findings, it implies that the translator of a digital comic Lore Olympus should prioritize paraphrasing strategies to maintain accuracy and acceptability when translating phrasal verbs from English into Indonesian.

Abstract

The study aims to measure how well the textbook supports students in attaining pragmatic proficiency in context-dependent professional communication. Applying a descriptive qualitative research, the study analyzes samples of text in the textbook according to the five deixis categories: person, place, time, discourse, and social deixis. The findings reveal that textbooks include diverse deictic expressions, but their pragmatic nature and context are not necessarily emphasized. Person deixis features prominently, as they are frequently used in business communication. However, other categories are still underrepresented, possibly limiting students from engaging with complex, hierarchical, and implicit relationships. These findings highlight the need for more pragmatically enriched material within ESP materials in order to better equip studentss for professional communication tasks.

Abstract

Editorials are widely recognized as a space where newspapers express their views and shape public opinion. While much attention has been given to the persuasive function of editorials, relatively little scholarly work has explored how evaluative language is used to build affiliation between writers and readers. This study addresses that gap by examining how The Jakarta Post constructs ideological affiliation through evaluative languages (attitudes), coupling patterns, and affiliation strategies. Drawing on Appraisal Theory within Systemic Functional Linguistics, the study explores how attitudes are constructed and combined with ideational content to position readers. The data were five editorial texts which were selected using a constructed week sampling method over a one-month period to ensure variety and balance. The findings show that appreciation is the most common type of attitude, which often appears in negative forms to criticize policies and institutional performance. Judgment is often used in the investigated editorials, especially when evaluating public figures. In contrast, affect appears less frequently, but it still plays an important role in conveying shared emotional concerns. These attitudes are usually presented through couplings with ideational elements such as actors, events, or policies. This combination makes the evaluations more persuasive. Two dominant coupling patterns were identified, namely [NEG + INDONESIA] which is used to criticize government performance and policy and [POS + INDONESIA] which highlights national values or collective goals. To foster alignment with readers, the editorials employ affiliation strategies such as conceding and overriding (a divisive strategy) and repetition (a solidary strategy) which help guide readers toward shared viewpoints or editorial stances. The findings shed light on a clearer understanding of how evaluative language in editorials builds ideological affiliation. The study offers theoretical insights into appraisal in Indonesian media discourse and practical contributions by highlighting how evaluative language shapes reader perspectives and supports media literacy development.

Claiming that “this may be the most important speech I’ve ever made,” this speech was one of the most noteworthy turning points of the 2020 United States presidential election. This paper aims at analyzing Trump’s speech on voter fraud claims that was released on December 2, 2020 from a critical discourse perspective. This descriptive qualitative research describes and investigates the main features, the main points of concern, and the objectives tried to achieve by delivering the speech. The result of the study shows that the main features of Trump’s political discourse include simplicity, repetition, parataxis, frames, deictics, hyperboles, inarticulation, and hearsay evidence. These features reflect Trump’s personality as well as his supporters’ characteristics. Regarding the main points of the discourse, there are several issues, including pandemic, swing states, mail-in ballots, and rigged system, that Trump tries to convey. There are also further implications or objectives that Trump tries to achieve by releasing the speech: keeping loyal supporters and avoiding prosecution.

Abstract

This study investigated the functions of sentences used in Colorbox's Instagram captions applying Greenbaum & Nelson (2009) framework: declarative, interrogative, imperative, and exclamatory. The aims of this study were to identify and analyze their use and to identify which types are the most frequently utilized. To achieve these objectives, 30 captions containing 58 sentences posted by Colorbox from January to December 2024 were selected using purposive random sampling. The captions were analyzed using qualitative methods. Each sentence in the text was examined and categorized based on its function. The results showed that imperative sentences are the most frequently used (46%), followed by interrogative sentences (28%), declarative sentences (21%), and exclamation sentences (5%). Imperative sentences are often used to encourage actions such as commenting or tapping on a link. The other sentence types are used to provide information, ask questions, or express emotions. These findings showed that Colorbox uses sentence functions effectively to communicate and interact with its audience. The results of this study give two implications both theoretically and practically. Theoretically, the results enrich the knowledge on functions of sentences. Practically, the results provide an insight for content creators and marketing practitioners to write more interesting, clear, and engaging captions.
