Abstract

The development of economic independence for Islamic boarding schools (pondok pesantren) has become an urgent necessity in facing the dynamic challenges of social and economic change. These institutions are required not only to rely on donations but also to develop productive enterprises to ensure the sustainability of the institution and the empowerment of the surrounding community. The purpose of this study is to examine the strategic role of the Kiai in managing the pesantren's resources through various decisional roles, such as entrepreneur, disturbance handler, resource allocator, and negotiator, as well as their effects on the economic development of the pesantren. The method used is a qualitative approach with a case study method. Data were collected through document analysis, observation of pesantren business activities, and interviews with pesantren managers. The study also analyzed data from pesantren businesses, including sectors such as fisheries, agriculture, mining, and waste processing. The results indicate that the effective leadership of the Kiai in executing decisional roles contributes significantly to the development of enterprises and the economic independence of the pesantren. The success of pesantren economic ventures not only increases revenue but also creates employment opportunities and empowers the local community. The synergy between leadership, resource management, and negotiation with various external parties is the key to creating pesantren that are independent, sustainable, and competitive in a modern context.

Abstract

This study explores the role of Income-Generating Units (IGUs) in promoting the economic independence of Islamic boarding schools. This study focuses on the mechanism of IGUs' contribution to the financial and educational sustainability of Islamic boarding schools, considering that the existing literature is still limited in discussing this aspect in depth. The main objective of this study is to investigate the strategies and resources that enable Islamic boarding schools to achieve economic independence to support the sustainability of their education. This study uses a qualitative with case study approach in Islamic boarding schools that have developed various mining, fisheries, and agribusiness businesses. Data were collected through interviews, observations, document reviews, and Focus Group Discussions (FGDs). The data analysis process includes classification, processing, and validation with the help of NVIVO software for effective management and coding of qualitative data. The results show that the economic success of Islamic boarding schools is driven by three main factors: effective resource utilization, strategic partnerships with external parties, and active involvement of students in business activities. This study confirms that IGUs play an important role in ensuring the sustainability of Islamic boarding schools, both in terms of financial independence and the development of student's practical skills, which simultaneously strengthens the competitiveness of Islamic boarding school education.

Abstract

This research aims to analyze the concept of self-generated revenue in Islamic boarding schools to support their economic independence. This research employs a qualitative with a case study approach, using interviews, document studies, and observations for data collection, Focus Group Discussion to gather views and ideas from various stakeholders regarding innovative revenue models for Islamic boarding schools, validation, and triangulation, assisted by NVIVO software for data analysis. The research is conducted at the Ar-Risalah Islamic Boarding School in Ciamis Regency. The findings indicate that the Ar-Risalah Islamic Boarding School is currently running and developing businesses in agriculture, fisheries, mining, farming, and integrated waste management. The profits from these businesses promote the economic independence of the boarding school and have a wide impact not only on the school itself but also on the surrounding community involved in the boarding school’s businesses.
