Abstract

Character education is a priority in the Indonesian education system and can be integrated into Arabic language learning, including in non-formal education. Arabic language teaching materials based on character education have the potential not only to improve language skills but also to instill positive character values in students. This study aims to analyze the effectiveness of character education-based Arabic language teaching materials implemented at the Majelis Taklim Al Mubarok Tamalanrea Indah Makassar. This study used a qualitative approach with content analysis techniques supported by quantitative data from pre- and post-tests. Data collection was conducted through documentation, observation, interviews, and tahsin and translation ability tests involving 14 participants. The results showed a significant increase in tahsin ability, from an average of 69.57 to 85.50 (a 22.9% increase), and translation ability, from 73.43 to 87.92 (a 19.7% increase). The main difficulties faced by participants included pronouncing the letter Ra (100%), the word Allah (92.9%), and the letter Dod (85.7%). These findings indicate that Arabic language teaching materials integrated with character education are effective in improving students' cognitive and affective aspects in the context of learning in the majelis taklim (Islamic study groups).

Abstract

This study presents a systematic literature review of twenty articles (2022–2025) to identify and synthesize problems faced by Arabic language teachers in implementing the Merdeka Curriculum in madrasahs. A systematic literature review approach with thematic content analysis was employed to extract and categorize findings from selected studies. The results show that implementation problems are systemic and multidimensional, consisting of thirteen themes: teacher competence (80%), lesson planning (70%), instructional implementation (70%), assessment (60%), teaching materials (50%), facilities and infrastructure (50%), technology use (40%), student characteristics (40%), student motivation (30%), administrative workload (30%), institutional support (30%), character integration (20%), and textbook relevance (20%). The synthesis indicates that low teacher competence is the main root problem, affecting planning, instruction, and assessment practices. However, institutional, infrastructural, and learner-related factors also contribute to implementation challenges. Findings also reveal contextual variation across regions, indicating that curriculum implementation is highly dependent on local conditions. This study recommends strengthening teacher competence, improving teaching materials, reducing administrative burdens, enhancing leadership support, and developing context-responsive learning strategies to improve the effectiveness of the Merdeka Curriculum in madrasahs.

Abstract

Teaching materials are a strategic component in the process of Arabic language learning, particularly in mastering the rules of nahwu (syntax) and sharaf (morphology). This study aims to analyze the content of the book At-Tafṣil fi Ma‘rifati Qawa‘id al-Lughah al-‘Arabiyyah by Muhammad Ridwan Salam based on William Frances Mackey’s theory, which encompasses four aspects: selection, gradation, presentation, and repetition. The book is an internal teaching material used exclusively at Markaz Darul Ilmi (MDI), an intensive Arabic language course institution in Wajo Regency, South Sulawesi, Indonesia. This study employed a qualitative approach using library research and content analysis techniques. The findings reveal that: (1) the selection aspect is fulfilled, as the materials are chosen in accordance with learning objectives, beginner students’ proficiency levels, and the one-month intensive learning program; (2) the gradation aspect is fulfilled, as the materials are organized from basic to more complex topics, progressing from morphology (sharaf) to syntax (nahwu); (3) the presentation aspect is fulfilled through the application of Mackey’s four presentation procedures, namely differential, ostensive, pictorial (tables and diagrams), and contextual procedures; and (4) the repetition aspect is strongly fulfilled in writing skills through essay-based exercises provided in each section, although it remains limited in speaking and listening skills. Therefore, At-Tafṣil generally meets the criteria of a language teaching textbook according to William Frances Mackey’s theory.
