Abstract

TORCH infections (Toxoplasmosis, Rubella, Cytomegalovirus, Herpes simplex) pose significant risks during pregnancy, contributing to congenital abnormalities and adverse neonatal outcomes. In Indonesia, limited public awareness and inadequate preventive practices exacerbate these risks. This community service initiative aimed to enhance knowledge about TORCH infections among reproductive-aged women through a hybrid educational seminar. Conducted in collaboration with Peduli TORCH, the program utilized the "5P Framework" (Pathogen Awareness, Prenatal Screening, Pathogen Management, Postnatal Monitoring, Preventive Practices) to deliver evidence-based strategies. A total of 54 participants (87% female, 61.1% from Jambi Province) attended the seminar, combining in-person and virtual engagement. Pre- and post-tests assessed knowledge improvement, revealing a statistically significant median score increase from 70.0 to 100.0 (p<0.001, Wilcoxon test). Participants reported high satisfaction with the seminar’s content, interactive format, and accessibility, though logistical refinements were suggested for future iterations. The initiative successfully bridged knowledge gaps, emphasizing the importance of early screening, vaccination, and hygiene practices. By empowering women and leveraging community engagement, this program highlights the potential of targeted educational interventions to reduce TORCH-related morbidity and improve maternal-child health outcomes. Culturally adapted, hybrid approaches demonstrate promise for scalable public health strategies in low-resource settings.

Abstract

Diabetes Melitus remains a prominent health challenge globally, particularly in Indonesia, and is therefore included in the country’s disease prevention and control programs. One effective strategy for diabetes Melitus prevention is through community-based education and screening initiatives. This community service activity aimed to provide free facilitation for community members to learn about diabetes Melitus, undergo health checks specifically for random blood glucose levels, then consult with a physician regarding their examination results. The community service activity was conducted at the Letrysa Primary Clinic and began with a pre-test, followed by an educational and counseling session led by an internal medicine specialist. This was then followed by a post-test and screenings of participants' random blood glucose levels and blood pressure. Additionally, participants received free consultations with the internal medicine specialist based on their screening outcomes. The examination results indicated that out of 35 participants, three individuals had abnormal random blood glucose levels. An analysis of pre-test and post-test scores demonstrated that the education and counseling sessions significantly improved participants' understanding and knowledge of diabetes Melitus. Based on these findings, it is recommended that this program be conducted routinely within communities to help prevent Diabetes Melitus.

Abstract

Low back pain is a common degenerative illness among the elderly, significantly impacting their quality of life and independence. Insufficient understanding of effective management frequently worsens the disease. The objective of this community service program was to enhance comprehension of low back pain among elderly and their caregivers at the Olak Kemang Public Health Centre in Jambi City. The programme consisted of an instructional session with 41 participants utilising a multidisciplinary-developed interactive visual module, accompanied by a practical demonstration of stretching exercises. A pre- and post-test design was used to quantitatively evaluate the alteration in participants' knowledge. The data were examined with the Wilcoxon and Pearson chi-square tests. The findings indicated a statistically significant enhancement in participants' knowledge, with the median score increasing from 60 (range: 30-80) in the pre-test to 85 (range: 50-100) in the post-test (p < 0.001). The number of participants who attained a passing score (≥70%) rose considerably from 19 to 31 (p = 0.007). The interactive visual education program effectively enhances awareness regarding lowback pain among the elderly and their caregivers. This strategy is highly recommended for implementation in other community health programs. Keywords: Low back pain; caregiver; health education; elderly

Abstract

Obesity is a major risk factors for non-communicable diseases, and its prevalence continues to increase in Indonesia. Community Health Centers, as primary healthcare providers, play a crucial role in obesity prevention through the empowerment of local health cadres. This community service aimed to enhance cadres’ knowledge and skills in early obesity detection. The program was implemented through a structured training consisting of material delivery and hands-on anthropometric measurement sessions, followed by field visits to Posyandu to evaluate cadres’ practical skills in performing anthropometric assessments. A total of 15 Posyandu cadres from the working area of Tahtul Yaman Community Health Center participated in this activity. The results showed a significant increase in knowledge, with median scores rising from 90 (range 50–100) in the pre-test to 100 (range 80–100) in the post-test (p = 0.007). The proportion of cadres achieving the passing score also increased from 53.3% to 100% (p = 0.006). Field observations indicated that most cadres were able to perform anthropometric examinations independently and in accordance with standard procedures. These findings suggest that structured training combined with practical field reinforcement may contribute to improving cadres’ competencies, thereby supporting their role in sustainable, community-based obesity prevention efforts. Keywords: Obesity screening; Health cadres; Anthropometry; Community health center.

Abstract

ABSTRACT Diabetes mellitus (DM) is a significant public health challenge, with a rapidly increasing burden in Indonesia. Community health cadres (kader) are crucial for community-level prevention, yet many possess limited knowledge regarding DM management and prevention. This community engagement program aimed to enhance the knowledge, attitudes, and practices (KAP) of health cadres within the Tahtul Yaman Primary Health Center area in Jambi City, focusing on diabetes prevention and control. This program utilized a participatory action research approach involving 15 active community health cadres. The intervention, conducted between August and September 2025, consisted of structured training modules, interactive lectures, Focus Group Discussions (FGDs), skill-based simulations (including glucometer use), and the distribution of educational toolkits. A pre-test/post-test design was used to evaluate changes in knowledge, with data analyzed using the Wilcoxon signed-rank test. Qualitative data were gathered through reflection sessions and one-month post-training field observations. Participants showed a statistically significant improvement in knowledge regarding diabetes prevention and management. The median knowledge score increased from 60 (IQR 40–80) at pre-test to 80 (IQR 40–90) at post-test (p = 0.009). Qualitative findings revealed positive shifts in cadres’ attitudes and increased self-efficacy in communicating health information. Key themes identified included knowledge empowerment and enhanced readiness for community engagement. Follow-up observations confirmed that cadres successfully applied their new skills, such as conducting risk screenings and health education, during community Posyandu ILP sessions. A structured, participatory, and context-sensitive training program effectively enhanced the knowledge, attitudes, and practical skills of community health cadres in DM prevention. Empowering cadres through continuous mentorship and integrating such programs into local health systems offers a sustainable and scalable strategy to strengthen community resilience and advance chronic disease management. Keywords: Diabetes melitus, community health cadres, health education empowerment, non-communicable diseases primary health care.
