Abstract

Previous studies on expressive speech acts in movies have primarily focused on identifying and classifying types of expressions, with limited attention to their pragmatic functions in contemporary teenage narratives. Moreover, the movie Do Revenge (2022) has not yet been examined from a linguistic or pragmatic perspective, indicating a research gap in the study of expressive speech acts in modern cinematic discourse. To address this gap, this study investigates the types and forms of expressive speech acts used by the characters in the film based on Searle’s (1976) speech act theory. Employing a descriptive qualitative method, the study addresses two research questions concerning the types of expressive speech acts found in the film and the ways these acts are realized in the dialogues. The findings identify six types of expressive speech acts, namely greeting, apologizing, thanking, expressing attitudes, wishing, and congratulating. In total, 55 expressive utterances were found, consisting of 51 direct and 4 indirect speech acts. Greeting appeared as the most dominant type, followed by apologizing and thanking. These findings indicate that expressive speech acts play an important role in representing emotional openness and interpersonal interaction among teenage characters. This study contributes to pragmatic research by demonstrating how expressive speech acts function as interactional resources that shape emotional expression and interpersonal dynamics in teenage film discourse.

Language is not only a tool for communication, but also a cognitive device  that enables individuals to understand and interpret their life experiences. By addressing the issue of how language reflects emotional experiences related to loss and recovery within parenting communities, showing how metaphorical expressions reflect Western perceptions of motherhood and emotional resilience. This research aims to explore how conceptual metaphors, namely baby blues, sunshine baby, rainbow baby, angel baby, golden baby, and sunrise baby reflect emotional experiences, coping mechanisms, and meaning-making processes among parents who have experienced childbirth or infant loss. The study involved qualitative descriptive analysis with purposive sampling of online narratives shared by parents, following stages of data collection, metaphor identification, and conceptual mapping The results reveal that light, color, and nature metaphors are dominant, showing how linguistic expressions transform grief into shared narratives of hope and healing, in accordance with the study’s objective to explore language as a cognitive and emotional tool. Keywords – Baby, Experience, Metaphore, Motherhood, Parenting

Abstract

Language plays a central role in shaping and reproducing social reality. Through language, individuals construct meaning, express ideology, and reinforce or challenge social hierarchies. One expression that illustrates this dynamic is “Spek LC”, a popular term on social media on platform X. Derived from “spek” (specification) and “LC” (Lady Companion), it originally described physical looks but has shifted into a form of verbal violence and gender-based discrimination against women. This study analyzes the denotative and connotative meanings of “Spek LC” and its psycholinguistic implications using Roland Barthes’ (1957) connotative semiotics and the Affective Load framework. Employing a qualitative content analysis, textual data were collected from public posts and comments containing the term “Spek LC” on platform X. Findings reveal that at the denotative level, the term refers to appearance, while at the connotative level, it functions as a derogatory label suggesting immorality and social inferiority. Exposure to this term generates a high affective load, evoking emotions such as shame, anger, and self-stigmatization. Overall, the study shows that language in social media operates as a symbolic power that perpetuates gender bias through emotional and ideological mechanisms. It emphasizes the need for critical language awareness to promote ethical and inclusive digital communication. Keywords: Connotative Semiotics, Digital Verbal Violence, Gender Based Discrimination.

Abstract

Abstract

Code-switching is a common linguistic practice in multilingual societies and often appears in modern Indonesian films as a reflection of bilingual communication. In 13 Bom di Jakarta (2023), characters frequently alternate between Indonesian and English, suggesting that language choice plays an important role in shaping identity, emotional expression, and social interaction. This study aims to identify the types and communicative functions of code-switching used by characters in the film. Using a qualitative research design with a content analysis approach, data were collected through the transcription of dialogues containing instances of code-switching. Each case was categorized based on Poplack’s code-switching typology and Appel and Muysken’s communicative function framework. The findings show that from 25 identified instances, intra-sentential switching was the most dominant type (68%), followed by inter-sentential switching (24%) and tag switching (8%). Regarding communicative functions, the referential function was used most frequently (44%), followed by expressive (24%), directive (20%), metalinguistic (8%), and poetic functions (4%). These results indicate that code-switching in the film is purposefully employed to convey technical meanings, express emotions and identity, give instructions, and create stylistic effects. The study contributes to sociolinguistic research and enriches the discussion on bilingual representation in Indonesian popular media. Keywords – Bilingualism, Code-Switching, Indonesia Films, Language Function, Sociolinguistics.
