Abstract

The overuse of chemical fertilizers can have detrimental effects on soil quality. It is important for farmers to find sustainable alternatives. One possible solution being explored is the use of liquid maggot derived from organic sources. This study aimed to determine the most suitable composition that fulfills plant needs and follows established guidelines. The research approach employed a qualitative descriptive method to assess the impacts of three treatments using different types of organic matter: fruit waste, restaurant waste, and palm oil cake. Phosphorus and potassium concentrations were determined through MP-AES analysis while nitrogen content was measured using the Kjeldahl method. The findings revealed that only the treatments involving fruit waste and restaurant waste met the recommended potassium levels. However, these treatments fell short of meeting requirements for other essential nutrients. As a result, additional research is needed to assess nutrient concentrations in different organic substances.

Abstract

Ectoparasitic infestations pose a significant threat to the sustainability of aquaculture systems, particularly affecting African catfish (Clarias gariepinus), a species intensively cultured in tropical regions, including Indonesia. This study aimed to analyze the community structure, prevalence rate, and infection intensity of ectoparasites in C. gariepinus cultured in three freshwater pond units located in Way Kandis, Lampung. Fieldwork was conducted between March and April 2023, involving 50 individuals measuring 25–30 cm in length. Fish mucus was collected from the skin, fins, and gill lamellae, followed by microscopic examination to identify ectoparasite genera and quantify infestation levels. A total of five ectoparasitic genera were identified: Oodinium, Gyrodactylus, Dactylogyrus, Chilodonella, and Trichodina. Among them, Dactylogyrus spp. showed the widest distribution across all sampling sites. The highest prevalence occurred in Pond I (46%), followed by Pond II (26%) and Pond III (10%), resulting in an overall prevalence of 86%. Mean infection intensities ranged from 1.25 to 2.00 parasites per host, with higher intensities observed in ponds exhibiting poor water quality and limited maintenance. These findings demonstrate that ectoparasitic infections remain a critical issue in small-scale aquaculture systems. The study provides important baseline data for developing targeted parasitological surveillance and management strategies. It underscores the necessity of proactive health management practices to enhance fish welfare, reduce production losses, and support sustainable aquaculture development in tropical pond-based systems.

Abstract

Tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) is a popular freshwater fish with promising development prospects due to its clean white flesh, high nutritional content, and affordability. However, feed costs in tilapia farming pose challenges, particularly with rising prices of fish meal, the primary protein source. Maggot (Hermetia illucens) and taro leaves (Colocasia esculenta) offer an alternative protein source for tilapia feed due to their high protein content. This study, conducted over 30 days in Marga Agung Village, South Lampung, tested the effects of different feed mixtures using a completely randomized design (RAL) with 4 treatments and 3 repetitions. The study involved 120 tilapia, evaluating parameters such as weight gain, specific growth rate (SGR), absolute length, feed conversion ratio (FCR), temperature, and pond clarity. Data analysis via ANOVA and Duncan's test showed the highest results in the control group (P0), with an average weight of 8.43g, an SGR of 28%, and an FCR of 1.42. Treatment P2 (50% maggot and 50% taro leaves) produced comparable results, with an average weight of 8.09g, an SGR of 27%, and an FCR of 1.44. Environmental conditions remained stable across treatments, with pH and water clarity showing minimal variation. These results suggest that a 50% maggot and 50% taro leaf mixture could be a viable alternative to fish meal for tilapia feed without significant differences in growth performance compared to the control.

Abstract

Elephants are charismatic exotic animals. As the largest land animal on the earth, their maximum weight can reach more than 7 tons and 4 meters in height. Apart from their exoticness, however, elephants, particularly Asian elephants are now losing more than 70% of their habitat. As a result, the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) has red-listed Asian elephants as the critically endangered animal. Various conservation efforts have been implemented, such as translocation of the elephants, control of poaching, educational campaigns, and research. Nonetheless, over the past two decades, Elephant Endotheliotropic Herpesvirus (EEHV), a newly emerging disease has caused a serious threat to Asian elephants’ health worldwide. The virus causes a rapid, acute, and fatal haemorrhagic disease as the major clinical manifestation in adult Asian elephants and particularly in juvenile elephants in both wild and captive populations. This article provides a literature review regarding the EEHV infection in Asian elephants.

Abstract

Abstract

This study aimed to analyze the effect of age variation on testicular morphometry and spermatozoa motility in cats. A total of 21 male cats were grouped into three age categories (< 1 year, 1–3 years, and 3 years). The testes were collected through an open castration procedure, and their morphometric parameters (length, width, and circumference) were measured. Semen samples were obtained by incising the cauda epididymis of each testis to evaluate its motility level under a light microscope. Data were analyzed using one-way Analysis of Variance (ANOVA), followed by the Tukey test to identify differences between groups. The results showed that age variation did not cause a significant difference in the morphometric characteristics of the collected testes (P>0.05). However, a significant difference was found in spermatozoa motility levels among the different age groups. It is concluded that age does not affect the physical dimensions of the testis but has a significant influence on the functional quality of spermatozoa. The 1–3 year-old group showed the optimal level of spermatozoa motility compared to the other age groups in this study
