Abstract

Comparison of absorbed dose bolus made from playdough, plasticine, and silicone rubber in electron beam radiotherapy has been assessed. This study aims to compare the absorbed dose, calculate the Relative Electron Density (RED) value, and physical density of playdough, plasticine, and silicone rubber bolus. The boluses were made with dimension of 15 cm×15 cm and thickness of (0,5; 1,0; 1,5; and 2,0) cm. RED value was obtained from tomographic image using CT-Simulator by determining 5 Region of Interest (ROI) regions. The physical density was calculated based on the mass and volume ratio. The absorbed dose was measured using a plan parallel chamber detector with a Linear Accelerator (LINAC) energy variation of 6 MeV and 9 MeV. The results are playdough, plasticine, and silicone rubber bolus have a homogeneous material composition with RED values is above the RED of water. The physical density of playdough and plasticine bolus is above the density of skin tissue but lower than bone tissue, while the physical density of silicone rubber bolus is close to the density of water, muscle, liver, kidney, and lung tissue. The absorbed dose value of silicone rubber bolus with a thickness of 0.5 cm is closer to the absorbed dose without bolus, so bolus of silicone rubber that are better used at energy of 6 MeV and 9 MeV are silicone rubber bolus.

Abstract

Abstract

Glioblastoma cancer (GBM) is a malignant brain tumour that develops aggressively and has a short life expectancy so it requires appropriate treatment for its treatment. The purpose of this study was to determine a more effective treatment technique in GBM cancer patients by comparing Three Dimension Conformal Radiation Therapy (3D-CRT) and Intensity Modulated Radiation Therapy (IMRT) irradiation techniques based on the parameters of Conformity Index (CI), Homogeneity Index (HI), maximum dose and Normal Tissue Integral Dose (NTID) of healthy tissue, as well as Dose Volume Histogram (DVH) curves obtained from the Treatment Planning System (TPS). This study used 10 GBM cancer patient data using a 6 MV photon beam and a total dose of 60 Gy. The data used are the volume of cancer when 95% of the radiation dose is given, the total volume of cancer, the radiation dose at 2%, 50%, 98%, the average dose and the volume of Organ at Risk (OAR). The results showed that the CI value for 3DCRT technique was 0.87-1.00 and IMRT technique was 0.92-0.98. HI value for 3DCRT technique is 0.02-0.07 and IMRT technique is 0.01-0.05. The percentage of the maximum dose value for the 3D-CRT technique is between 104.72% to 108.95% while the IMRT technique is between 98.40% to 108.60%. The NTID values obtained in both techniques did not exceed the established dose limits and were in accordance with the Radiation Therapy Oncology Group (RTOG) 0825 and 0615. IMRT technique is more effective than 3DCRT technique for GBM cancer patients based on CI, HI and maximum dose values.

Abstract

Verification of surface radiation dose in breast cancer cases using the in vivo dosimetry method with TLD-100 at the Radiation Oncology Unit of Andalas University Hospital has been carried out. The aim of the study is to verify the adequacy of the surface radiation dose calculated by the Treatment Planning System (TPS) with the measured radiation dose of TLD-100, referring to the report of the American Association of Physicists in Medicine Task Group No.219 (AAPM-TG No.219). This study began with the annealing of the TLD-100, namely the cleaning of the electrons trapped by the TLD-100 at the Research Center for Safety Technology Metrology and Nuclear Quality of the National Innovation Research Agency (PRTKMMR-BRIN), followed by the scanning of the TLD-100 on the surface of the phantom plate using a CT simulator. In addition, the TLD-100 was calibrated with different radiation doses (0; 20; 50; 80; 100; 150; 200; 250; 370) cGy. Verification of surface radiation dose on five breast cancer treatment planning data with TPS surface radiation dose calculation by Patient Specific Quality Assurance (PSQA) or transfer of patient treatment plan to slab phantom and compared with radiation dose measured on TLD 100. The measured surface radiation dose was found to range from 115.07 cGy to 130.81 cGy. Verification showed that the difference between the radiation dose calculated by the TPS and that measured by the TLD-100 was 0.21% to 8.13%. This shows that the surface radiation dose in breast cancer cases is within the 20% tolerance limit set by AAPM-TG No.219.

Abstract

Research has been carried out regarding the evaluation of scattered radiation dose during CT scans of the thorax on the gonads and thyroid using 30 patients with CT scans of the thorax. In this study, the radiation dose received by thorax CT Scan patients was measured using TLD-100 which was placed at 3 measurement points on the patient. The first point was placed on the thyroid using 1 TLD, the second point on the thorax using 2 TLDs, and the third point was placed on the gonads using 1 TLD. The thorax CT Scan examination used a tube voltage of 120 kV. The results showed that the DLP and CTDIvol values affected the value of the effective dose received. The average values of CTDIvol and DLP were 6.268 mGy and 782.196 mGy.cm and the average thorax dose was 2.495 mSv. The average CTDIvol and DLP values obtained in the study did not exceed the threshold set by the BAPETEN Regulation in 2021, namely the CTDIvol and DLP values were 16 mGy and 810 mGy.cm. Radiation that affects the gonads and thyroid organs is scattered radiation. The average radiation dose received on the gonads and thyroid organs was 0.121 mSv and 0.485 mSv. The average dose value received did not exceed the dose received on the thorax and the radiation dose received on the thyroid was greater than the radiation dose received on the gonads. This is because the thyroid organ is closer to the irradiation area than the gonad organ.

Abstract

A study has been conducted on the effect of using a physical wedge filter on the dose profile and Percentage Depth Dose (PDD) of the CLINAC-CX teletherapy device at Andalas University Hospital. This study aims to determine the shape of the dose profile and PDD curves formed from the use of physical wedges. Measurements were made with variations in photon beam energy (6 MV and 10 MV) and variations in the angle of the physical wedge filter (15°, 30°, 45°, and 60°). Data processing begins by calculating incomplete data from the LINAC using interpolation techniques. The data is then displayed in the form of a curve or graph using Microsoft Excel. The results of the PDD curve measurement showed no significant difference in the curve formed using or without a wedge. The resulting zmax did not differ much from each other, where for a 6 MV beam without a wedge it was 13.8 mm while the average wedge variation was 14.72 mm. The 10 MV beam variation showed a value of 23.4 mm and an average of 24 mm. The dose profile formed is influenced by the use of wedge, the comparison of the smallest and largest symmetry, flatness, and penumbra values. The smallest values at 6 MV irradiation without wedge are respectively 2.1%, 3.1%, 7.1 mm, and 7.3 mm, while the largest with a wedge angle of 60°, 32.4%, 58.3%, 15.8 mm. The wedge factor between 6 MV and 10 MV shows no difference.
