Abstract

Blended learning necessitates a digitization technology on the part of both instructors and students, the use of up-to-date instructional strategies, adaptable learning procedures, the efficiency of the processes, space, and financial resources, as well as learner motivation and independence; all of these factors lead to a rise in learner academic achievement. Unfortunately, the results ofthe most recent empirical studies do not support the idea that blended learning help learners enhance their English proficiency and their level of learning independence. There is proof that blended learning impacts the English proficiency, learning independence, enthusiasm, and ICT skills of students. This article analyzed and quantified the effectiveness of blended learning in English as a Foreign Language (EFL). This study is a quantitative explanatory research type with a pre-test and post-test design. One hundred eighty students from the Agronomy Study Program at Universitas Katolik Indonesia Santu Paulus Ruteng participated in the study. A method of random sampling was utilized, and from that population, 73 participants were selected as samples. Data was taken by test and non test, then analyzed by a software program called SPSS 22.0. Teen blended learning sessions, including five face-to-face and five virtual sessions, are conducted using the Zoom platform. The findings indicate that students' English language skills improve with blended learning (the mean score on the posttest was 82.57), as do their levels of learning independence (82.44%), learning enthusiasm (76%), and ICT skills (70.43%).

Abstract

Culture is about human existence and the way of life, while language is about the communication system between people in a particular society or community. Language use usually reflects the habits of society, the way of thinking, the work of the brain, the history of society, and the internal relationship in society. The use of personal pronoun inclusive we ité in Manggarai language helps speakers find out the relationship between linguistic aspects and cultural values. Based on these arguments, this study aims to analyze the relationship between the two aspects that are being addressed. The data were collected through observations and interviews of the ten traditional spokespersons, then analyzed qualitatively. The finding indicates that the use of ité in all of its forms reflects the etiquette of people in Manggarai, Indonesia. Referring to the data stated, this study, therefore, concludes that the first personal pronoun plural inclusive we ité, in Manggarai language and culture demonstrates the speaker's politeness and humility in front of the hearer or listener; the speaker truly respects the interlocutor; to convey high regard for the interlocutor in a high position; to prove tribute, respect, and admiration; to show intimacy, closeness, and fraternity in the social relationship; and to show a great homage to Supreme Being.

Abstract

Readers should integrate information from the text they are reading with their existing knowledge since reading is a process of building meaning and language expansion. Without improving reading abilities, it is hard to succeed in the teaching and learning process and develop a more thorough understanding, a perceptive attitude, and creative thinking to reach reading achievement. The purpose of this study is to outline the issues that cropped up while reading. In this descriptive-qualitative study, the researchers identified, analyzed, and characterized the readers' mental processes for reading comprehension. Thirty students were taken randomly from three classes enrolled in the Intermediate Reading Course of the English Language Education Study Program, Universitas Mahasaraswati Denpasar. The finding showed that the students encountered four main problems: Inability to understand word, phrase, and sentence processing (78.1%); having weak syntactic parsing (83.3%), less inference (81.7), and inadequate self-monitoring (84%). The reading lecturers are suggested to determine the student’s reading comprehension needs and employ relevant tips in the reading course, such as creating good connections, making predictions, visualizing, making inferences, self-questioning, and summarizing. The results are expected to give a useful contribution to strengthen reading theory and the lecturers in analyzing students’ reading comprehension problems.

Abstract

All teachers, including speaking instructors, should be able to select the proper interactive media for students' speaking practice. Video-assisted learning tasks in the speaking class have not been explored extensively, despite the reality that video-based tasks are an appropriate choice for students to enhance their speaking ability. This study sought to examine the Effect of video-based tasks on students' speaking skills. In this study, a quasi-experimental design was employed, and the speaking scoring rubric served as the research instrument. Both the experimental group and the control group were comprised of participants. Researchers gave pre-and post-tests to identify the impact of the video-based tasks technique on students' speaking skills. Using a simple random sampling technique, 56 students from the English study program in the first grade at Universitas Katolik Indonesia Santu Paulus Ruteng comprised the research sample; then, the data were analyzed by using a t-test with the assistance of the SPSS 24.0 program. The data analysis of the average student score in the experimental and control groups revealed that the experimental group's average score (80,29) was higher than the control group's average score (67,57). This result demonstrates the significant effects of video-based tasks in teaching speaking. The researchers concluded that video-based tasks were helpful for teaching speaking skills. Moreover, video-based tasks significantly impact students' ICT skills, learning independence, and self-evaluation development. The logical implication of this study's findings is that EFL teachers should use videos to teach English, particularly speaking skills, because it has been demonstrated to have a favorable effect on the respondents' speaking ability.

Abstract

This study is concerned with discourse semantic analysis of three selected victory speeches of the US Presidents. It was conducted for and aimed at describing, explaining, and analyzing the field, the interpersonal meaning (tenor) the mode of the texts, the schematic structure, and the unity of the texts by using Systemic Functional Linguistics (SFL) as the basis of analysis. The speech texts were changed into clauses and then analyzed. The results of the analysis found that the register category of field is similar. The transitivity patterns of the grammar, reference, and lexical string analysis share common features that is the realization of experiential action done by the speaker and audience for the progress of America. The interpersonal meaning of the texts is slightly different, in which, Joe Biden and Barack Obama established an intimate relationship with the audience, while in Donald trump’s text, the sense of intimacy and the distance with the audience are far. Since the nominal groups used were simple, the mode of all texts belongs to the spoken mode. Besides, In terms of schematic structure, the texts were constructed similarly consisting of an introduction, body, and conclusion. Finally, this study also found that the anaphoric reference which was predominantly used, a good pattern of conjunction relations, and lexical relations between lexical items appearing cross clauses categorize the texts as being highly cohesive.

Abstract

Assessment is one component of a learning process that cannot be excluded by an English teacher in the teaching-learning process. The form and type of assessment applied in the teaching-learning process are adapted to the orientation of learners’ target outcomes. It is recognized as a space of reflection for teachers and students in the awareness of shortcomings and achieving such learning goals. Performance-based assessment is one of the possible appropriate options for measuring all criteria fulfillment in the English speaking class. The present study aims to analyze the implementation of performance-based assessment and disclose students' responses to this assessment in the speaking class. This research is a quantitative descriptive study administered between November 2020 and January 2021 for three months. Participants (N=49) in this study were selected from two first-grade English Education Study Program classes, Universitas Katolik Indonesia Santu Paulus Ruteng. Speaking rubrics and questionnaires were the instruments used in collecting data. The data taken from these instruments were then analyzed with the Excel Chart Data Series software program's aid, accompanied by a qualitative interpretation from the data provided. The research findings show that the type of performance-based assessment affects increasing speaking ability (the post-test average = 76), and college students' perception of performance-based assessment use in speaking was primarily included in positive perception. The lecturers are encouraged to apply this type of assessment to their speaking class.

Abstract

This study aims to expose detailed descriptions of the grammatical features of Indonesian English. Indonesian English refers to a newly recognised linguistic variety of English as proposed by Coleman (2017). The grammatical characteristics as the result of acquiring a new language lead to the presence of a new variety of Indonesian English. Applying descriptive qualitative research, the data were collected based on recordings of the speech of 24 college students on three different topics. Following the principle proposed by Cogo and Dewey (2012), this study reveals twelve grammatical features as the characteristics of Indonesian English. They are namely the over-generalisation and omission of the copula BE (i.e am, is, are), the use of Indonesian collocation and literal translation, subject–verb agreement, the omission of the plural marker 's', assigning different lexical meanings, inappropriate prepositions, the omission of possessive markers, the omission and addition of articles, the application of verb tenses, the use of Indonesian acronyms and abbreviations, the incorrect construction of passive forms, and the use of Indonesian lexical items. It is shown that one of the main factors in the emergence of this new English variant is the contact of the multiple languages used by the speakers.

Abstract

The research explored the connection between the linguistic elements and cultural principles of the Manggarai language, focusing on the provided arguments. Language utilization typically represented the societal customs, cognitive processes, cognitive functioning, historical context, and interconnections within a given human civilization. Utilizing the inclusive personal pronoun, ‘we ité’ in the Manggarai language facilitated the identification of two indicated elements (linguistic elements and cultural principles). The research applied a descriptive-qualitative method. Data were obtained using observations and interviews conducted with fifteen traditional representatives from six communities using the purposive sampling method. Subsequently, a qualitative analysis was performed on the collected data. The findings suggest that its utilization in its various manifestations indicates the cultural norms and customs observed by those living in the Manggarai region of Indonesia. Based on the presented data, the research asserts that the first personal pronoun plural inclusive ‘we ité’ in the Manggarai language and culture serves as a means for the speaker to communicate politeness and humility towards the hearer or listener. It signifies a genuine respect for the interlocutor, particularly when they hold a high position. In addition, it shows familiarity, brotherhood, and sincerity in interpersonal relationships by expressing respect, appreciation, and enthusiasm. Lastly, it serves as a profound respect to the Almighty Creator.

Abstract

The present research undertakes a cultural analysis of ethnic verses and songs from Malakan to uncover their underlying philosophical thought. Understanding these works' fundamental principles and concepts is essential to convey their valuable knowledge, which ultimately shapes and reinforces values in future generations. Cultural-linguistic theory by Sharifin (2021) was utilized to find out if Malakan ethnic song verses include cultural features. This descriptive-qualitative study method used observation, in-depth interviews, documentation, and Focus Group Discussions with 40 participants from eight communities from July to September 2023. The findings indicate that the auditory elements of lyrics, words, phrases, and clauses serve as a means of conveying the cultural values of the Malakan people when singing four traditional songs as a component of their daily lives. In addition, several values were derived from the meaning of the four-song lyrics, including patience, responsibility, commitment, resilience, harmony, togetherness, sacrifice, empathy, and sympathy, which ultimately serve as a reference for human behavior in the Malakan community. The findings suggest that storing traditional artworks linked to poetry and musical works is advisable. Through the utilization of poetry and musical compositions, people could find cultural components that can be reused as indigenous content for the study of cultural arts and local languages.
