Abstract

Teachers are professionals who are not only required to be able to transfer their knowledge and educate students, but they must also be able to develop their professionalism, one of which is by conducting research. But in reality, teachers at SMPN I Buduran Sidoarjo have very little knowledge about research, especially classroom action research (CAR). The method chosen to overcome this problem is through workshops and PTK article mentoring clinics. The reason for choosing this method was to facilitate teachers at SMPN I Buduran Sidoarjo to practice directly in making CAR articles. The PTK article assistance workshop and clinic which was held on March 11 & 25 2023 was able to motivate teachers at SMPN I Buduran Sidoarjo to do CAR and help increase teachers' understanding of CAR implementation. And through the article assistance clinic, as many as 6 teachers have succeeded in publishing their articles in national journals. Abstract

This study investigates the complex challenges, strategies, and skills development of English as a Foreign Language (EFL) undergraduate students during their thesis writing journey. While the undergraduate thesis represents a crucial milestone in higher education, EFL students face significant linguistic, psychological, andtechnical barriers that impact their academic progress. Using a qualitative approach and semi-structured interviews with eight undergraduate students from various Indonesian universities, this study examined their experiences in thesis writing. The research employed reflexive thematic analysis, using NVivo 15 software to process and analyze the data. The findings reveal three primary dimensions of challenges: linguistic knowledge and writing competence, psychological and emotional barriers, and resource-related technical constraints. Students employed various adaptive strategies, including self-management techniques, technological assistance, and comprehensive support networks to overcome these challenges. The study also identified the development of essential competencies in research methodology, critical thinking, and time management. The results highlight the need for integrated institutional support systems that address both academic and psychological aspects of thesis writing, suggesting curriculum modifications and enhanced supervision frameworks to better support EFL students in their academic journey.HIGHLIGHTS: EFL undergraduate students face three interconnected challenges during thesis writing:linguistic barriers (grammar, academic vocabulary, coherence), psychological obstacles(stress, isolation, imposter syndrome), and resource-technical constraints (limited accessto materials, technological difficulties). Successful thesis completion relies on adaptive strategies including structured self-management techniques, technological tools (AI writing assistants, referencemanagement software), and comprehensive support networks (supervisors, peers, family)that address both academic and emotional needs. The thesis writing journey develops essential transferable competencies beyond academicwriting, including advanced research skills, critical thinking abilities, and timemanagement proficiency that prepare students for future scholarly and professionalendeavors.

Abstract

This research aims to analyze the influence of Project Based Learning (PjBL), Case Based Learning (CBL), and learning styles on student learning outcomes. The research methodology used is a quantitative approach involving experiments. The research subjects were students randomly selected from 5 (five) schools spread across 5 (five) areas of Surabaya to take part in the teaching process using the PjBL and CBL models. Students are identified using a questionnaire divided into three main categories: visual, auditory, and kinesthetic. Research findings show that there is a significant influence of the use of the PjBL and CBL models on student learning outcomes. that the regression model which includes CBL, Learning Style, and PjBL as a whole has a significant influence on Learning Outcomes. This can be seen from the large value of F = 35.762 and Sig. = 0.000, which indicates that this model can explain significant variations in student learning outcomes. Meanwhile, Learning Style does not have a significant influence on student learning outcomes. This is indicated by the p-value = 0.531 (greater than 0.05) and the standard coefficient (Beta) which is very small (0.031). Thus, Learning Style cannot be considered as the main factor influencing student learning outcomes in this model. This study highlights the importance of selecting teaching strategies that align with students' learning styles to maximize performance. The results provide guidance for teachers and students in developing flexible and effective teaching strategies.

Abstract

This study examines the efficacy of Mobile-Assisted Language Learning (MALL) in improving English speaking skills among Indonesian senior high school students. Employing a mixed-methods approach, the research utilized a quasi-experimental design involving 70 students divided into experimental and control groups. The experimental group utilized mobile applications like ELSA Speak and HelloTalk, whilst the control group implemented conventional ESL methods. Speaking performance was measured through pre-test and post-test scores, complemented by questionnaires and interviews to explore learners’ perceptions.Quantitative findings reveal that although both groups demonstrated statistically significant improvement, the experimental group showed substantially greater gains. The control group recorded a modest mean increase of 1.63 points with a moderate effect size (Cohen’s d = 0.58), whereas the experimental group achieved a remarkable mean gain of 13.23 points, accompanied by a very large effect size (Cohen’s d = 3.36). These results indicate that MALL is considerably more effective than traditional instruction in improving English speaking proficiency. The reduced score variability in the experimental group further suggests more consistent learner achievement following the intervention. Qualitative findings indicate that MALL increased learners’ motivation, reduced speaking anxiety, and enhanced learner autonomy through flexible practice and immediate feedback. Despite its effectiveness, the study identified challenges related to technological constraints and initial instructor readiness. Issues such as unstable internet connectivity occasionally disrupted learning, and limited early guidance affected initial application use. However, these challenges did not significantly hinder learning outcomes when adequate teacher support was provided. Overall, the findings demonstrate that MALL offers a pedagogically effective approach to enhancing English speaking skills in the Indonesian high school context. When integrated thoughtfully with conventional instruction and supported by appropriate technological and instructional preparation, MALL has strong potential to transform speaking instruction and promote more engaging, autonomous, and effective language learning.

Abstract

This study examined how well Luca cartoons work to enhance the oral skills of elementary school students, paying special attention to vocabulary and pronunciation. The event took place at a Sidoarjo-based private Islamic elementary school. A mixed method approach including quantitative and qualitative data was used in this investigation. Twenty-five second-graders took part in the study, which used Luca cartoons as a teaching tool for eight treatment sessions. While observations evaluated motivation, engagement, listening comprehension, vocabulary acquisition, emotional reactions, interactions, and follow-up activities, pre-tests and post-tests evaluated vocabulary and pronunciation progress. Both vocabulary (from a mean score of 5.56 before the test to a mean score of 8.26 after the exam) and pronunciation (from a mean score of 5.16 before the test to a mean score of 7.82 after the test) shown notable increases, according to the results. Approximately 91% of the pupils engaged in active participation and shown desire and curiosity. The majority of kids demonstrated strong listening comprehension, picked up new vocabulary, and expressed interest in words they were unfamiliar with. Positive emotional responses made studying English more enjoyable. The students' enthusiastic participation and application of the English expressions they had learnt from the video were demonstrated by the post-film discussion. Although the terminology was not consistently transferred to other settings, the follow-up exercises successfully improved memory and summary abilities. According to the study's findings, adding Luca cartoons to the curriculum can make learning more fun and efficient while also greatly enhancing students' motivation, engagement, and speaking abilities. Thus, it's critical to keep considering individual characteristics when creating new teaching methods to guarantee that every student gains an equal advantage.

Abstract

Standardized teacher assessments such as the Cambridge Teaching Knowledge Test (TKT) are increasingly used to evaluate pedagogical knowledge, yet their integration into local educational settings remains challenging. Specifically in Indonesia, elementary English as a Foreign Language (EFL) teachers face unique barriers during TKT preparation due to contextual misalignment. Despite existing studies on teacher training and assessment, limited research addresses the lived experiences of teachers navigating TKT preparation in resource-constrained environments. This study aims to explore the perceptions, challenges, and outcomes encountered by eight Indonesian EFL teachers during a six-session TKT preparation program using a narrative inquiry approach. Findings reveal minimal improvement in test readiness, largely influenced by limited preparation time, insufficient training resources, and incongruity between TKT content and local teaching realities. The novelty lies in its focus on narrative insights from in-service primary school teachers, often underrepresented in assessment literature. Implications suggest that for standardized assessments like the TKT to be effective and equitable, localized training support, contextual adaptation, and sustained mentoring are essential. This study contributes to the discourse on EFL teacher development by exposing the practical dissonance between global certification frameworks and local instructional ecosystems. Highlights: Highlights contextual barriers faced by Indonesian EFL teachers during TKT prep. Reveals misalignment between global tests and local teaching practices. Emphasizes need for localized support in standardized teacher training.
