Abstract

Abstract

Springs are primary water sources for rural communities and are sensitive to land-cover changes in recharge areas; therefore, assessing spring quantity and quality is essential for local water security. This study examines the association between banyan (Ficus) presence and spring quantity and water quality in Gendol Hill, Geneng Village, Wonogiri. A quantitative descriptive design was applied during the dry season, including an inventory of all springs and spatial documentation of nearby Ficus. Spring quantity was measured as flow/discharge, while water quality was evaluated using physico-chemical parameters (temperature, dissolved oxygen/DO, electrical conductivity/EC, salinity) and microbiological testing for Escherichia coli. All springs were perennial and showed variability in spring quantity (Meinzer classes V–VII). Ficus occurred at most spring outlets, paired comparisons of selected nearby springs indicated higher spring quantity at sites with Ficus than at sites without Ficus, although the pattern was not uniform across locations. E. coli was detected in three springs, while seven were negative. DO ranged from 1.93 to 4.99 ppm and temperature from 20.70 to 27.52°C, suggesting heterogeneous outlet conditions. These findings support spring protection zoning and sanitation management, alongside conserving woody vegetation as a supporting element for spring-ecosystem stability.

Abstract

Geography instruction on landslide disaster mitigation at the high school level is still dominated by conventional methods, resulting in students’ understanding being abstract and lacking in context. This situation is suboptimal, given that the city of Samarinda faces a high risk of landslides, including in school environments. This study aims to develop and assess the feasibility of Google Sites-based learning materials on landslide disaster mitigation for 11th-grade high school students in Samarinda. This study employed the Research and Development (R&D) method using the ADDIE model, which includes the stages of Analysis, Design, Development, Implementation, and Evaluation. The research was conducted at State High School 13 Samarinda and IT Granada High School in Samarinda. Research instruments included expert validation forms for the media and content, as well as student response questionnaires. Data were analyzed using quantitative descriptive methods. The results indicate that the Google Sites-based media received a “highly feasible” rating based on expert validation and elicited positive responses from students. This media is capable of increasing student interest, facilitating understanding of the material, and supporting more interactive and flexible learning.

Abstract

Tropical rivers play an essential role in maintaining biodiversity, providing ecosystem services, and supporting local livelihoods. However, river pollution caused by household waste, market waste, plastic packaging, disposable diapers, organic debris, detergent foam, and riparian degradation accompanied by localized sedimentation has become a major environmental challenge, particularly in Samarinda City, East Kalimantan. This study investigates community-based river conservation initiatives implemented by the Gerakan Memungut Sehelai Sampah Sungai Karang Mumus (GMSS–SKM) and explores the contribution of drone-assisted spatial observation to river conservation. The study employed a qualitative method combined with a spatial approach. Data were collected through in-depth interviews with the head of GMSS–SKM, field observations, documentation, literature review, and visual interpretation of drone aerial imagery. Data credibility was strengthened through source, method, and theory triangulation, while the findings were interpreted using a geographical perspective, particularly the regional-complex approach. The findings indicate that inorganic waste, particularly plastic packaging, disposable diapers, bottles, and food containers, predominated during the dry season, whereas the rainy season increased the accumulation of organic debris, wood fragments, mixed domestic waste, and sediment transported from upstream areas. Drone observations identified waste accumulation hotspots, degraded riparian vegetation, drainage outlets, localized sediment deposits, and river segments with limited ground accessibility. These spatial observations supported the prioritization of river clean-up, riparian greening, environmental education, and future river monitoring. The integration of community participation, local knowledge, and drone-assisted observation provides an effective decision-support approach for community-based river conservation.
