Abstract

Rural areas with natural potential and agrarian atmosphere such as Pematang Johar Village present opportunities to be developed into sustainable tourism destinations. However, limitations in lodging facilities and lack of environmentally friendly practices become obstacles in optimizing that potential. Therefore, this community-service activity aims to design and assist the implementation of eco-friendly homestays and lodgings as a new tourist attraction in the village. The implementation methods consist of initial observation and problem identification, training and assistance for lodging managers/owners and community members, and post-implementation evaluation. The results show increased environmental awareness among homestay managers and the community, evidenced by improved building design using local/natural materials, implementation of waste management systems and greening the environment, and establishment of environmentally friendly homestay service standards. These findings indicate that eco-friendly homestay development can serve as an alternative lodging option that strengthens the village’s tourism appeal while supporting environmental preservation and community empowerment. Thus, environmentally conscious lodging innovation is worthy to be adopted as a sustainable tourism model in Pematang Johar Village, with a recommendation that management continues participatively and receives support from the village authority for sustainability.

Abstract

This community service and research project aims to enhance the digital capabilities of the Pematang Johar Rice Field Tourism Village community through strengthened branding and digital marketing. The activity was motivated by the significant decline in tourist visits during the COVID-19 pandemic, which highlighted the need for more adaptive promotional strategies. The study employed a descriptive-participatory approach consisting of observation, socialization, training, and mentoring activities. A total of 60 participants were involved in training sessions covering visual content production, social media management, Google Maps optimization, and village website development. Pre-test results indicated low levels of digital literacy (40/100), while post-test scores increased sharply to 90/100 after the mentoring sessions. Beyond technical improvements, the program also led to social transformation, including the formation of a village digital team, increased collaboration among MSMEs, and the establishment of a new branding identity: “Pematang Johar – Rice Field Tourism on the Outskirts of Medan City.” The outcomes demonstrate that digital marketing is an effective strategy for promoting tourist villages and supporting sustainable local economic growth.

Abstract

The limited economic capacity of rural families often stems from minimal knowledge about local resource utilization and weak home-based business management. This program aimed to enhance family income through education on the production of processed snack foods using locally available ingredients. A service-learning and participatory empowerment approach was implemented with 40 housewives, youth representatives, and micro-entrepreneurs. Training included product innovation, hygiene practices, packaging techniques, and basic financial management. Results indicated a 65% increase in participants’ knowledge of snack processing techniques, and 75% began producing or selling snack products within one month post-training. Proper education accompanied by mentoring can effectively transform local agricultural commodities into marketable food products, thereby contributing to household income enhancement and sustainable community-based entrepreneurship.
