Abstract

Interdisciplinary Islamic studies is a scientific approach that has developed in response to the complexity of Islamic realities amidst modern social, cultural, and technological dynamics. Islam is understood not only as normative teachings derived from the Qur'an and Hadith, but also as a historical and social phenomenon that continues to evolve. This article aims to examine the scope of interdisciplinary Islamic studies, emphasizing the scientific approach, historical development, and its relevance in the millennial era. This research employs a qualitative approach with library research, through a review of various classical and contemporary literature relevant to Islamic studies and interdisciplinary approaches. The results demonstrate that an interdisciplinary approach, particularly one based on history, can provide a more contextual, critical, and comprehensive understanding of Islam by integrating Islamic sciences and the social and humanities. This historical approach helps uncover the dynamics of Islamic thought and practice, which are rich, dialogical, and adaptive to changing times. In the context of the millennial era, interdisciplinary Islamic studies have strategic relevance in interpreting contemporary Islamic phenomena such as digital da'wah, shifts in religious authority, and changes in the religiosity of the younger generation. Thus, interdisciplinary Islamic studies are expected to strengthen moderate, inclusive, and humanist attitudes, while ensuring Islam remains relevant and solution-oriented in facing the challenges of modern life without losing the fundamental values of its teachings.

Abstract

The dialectic of universalism and particularism in Islam is a crucial issue in contemporary Islamic studies, particularly in the context of Islamic Religious Education (PAI), which faces the realities of a pluralistic and dynamic society. Islam embodies universal values that transcend time and space, such as monotheism, justice, humanity, compassion, and the common good. However, in practice, Islamic teachings constantly interact with social, cultural, and historical contexts, giving rise to a variety of particular religious expressions. This study aims to analyze the dialectic between universalism and particularism in Islam and its implications for the development of the Islamic Religious Education paradigm. This study employed a qualitative approach with library research. Data sources were obtained from the Qur'an, Hadith, and the works of classical and contemporary Islamic scholars and thinkers relevant to the themes of universalism, particularism, and Islamic education. Data analysis was conducted descriptively and analytically using an interactive analysis model, encompassing data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion drawing. The study's findings indicate that universalism and particularism in Islam are not contradictory concepts, but rather dialectical and complementary. Universalism serves as the foundation for the values and fundamental principles of Islamic teachings, while particularism provides a contextual framework for applying these values to the social realities of students. From the perspective of Islamic Religious Education, this dialectic demands a critical, reflective, and dialogical pedagogical approach so that Islamic Religious Education (PAI) serves not only as a means of transferring knowledge but also as a process for developing a mature, moderate, and civilized religious awareness. Thus, Islamic Religious Education is expected to produce a generation of Muslims who are ritually devout, socially sensitive, tolerant, and committed to universal human values in a pluralistic society.

Abstract

Religious knowledge and general science are two essential fields that play a significant role in shaping individuals who are intellectually competent, morally grounded, and capable of adapting to the rapid changes of the modern world. In contemporary education, integrating these two disciplines has become increasingly important, as a segregated approach often leads to fragmented perspectives among students. Religious knowledge provides moral, ethical, and spiritual foundations that guide human behavior, while general science offers empirical, rational, and practical insights necessary for addressing social, technological, economic, and environmental challenges. An interdisciplinary approach between these knowledge fields aims not only to eliminate the long-standing dichotomy within the educational system but also to build a more holistic mindset. Through this integration, students are able to recognize that religion and science are not opposing entities, but complementary sources of truth and understanding. This study highlights the urgency of integrating religious and scientific knowledge and emphasizes its benefits in producing a generation with balanced intellectual, emotional, and spiritual intelligence. The findings suggest that such an integrative approach enhances learning quality and supports the comprehensive development of students.

Abstract

Contemporary Islamic studies face new dynamics with the development of modern science. The interdisciplinary approach offers an opportunity to enrich the understanding of Islam but also has the potential to create methodological conflicts. This article examines seven interdisciplinary models in Islamic studies—ranging from integration, interconnection, critical dialogue, synthesis, Islamization of knowledge, critical deconstruction, to epistemological conflict models. Using a literature review approach, this paper explores the strengths, weaknesses, and academic implications of each model. The research findings suggest that the interconnection and critical dialogue models are the most adaptive for the development of modern Islamic studies, while the methodological conflict model tends to sharpen paradigm differences without achieving a common ground. This article concludes that the interdisciplinary approach has the potential to serve as a constructive bridge—provided it is conducted with a dialogical, critical, and non-hegemonic attitude.

Abstract

Sociological and anthropological approaches in Islamic studies to understand religion contextually in modern society, where religion is often a source of problems due to a lack of understanding of social sciences. The sociological approach (ilm al-ijtimaiyah) studies the social aspects of Islam such as societal structure, group interactions (in-group/ out-group, primary/secondary, paguyuban /patembayan), as well as functionalist and symbolic interactionist perspectives to implement Islamic teachings universally and prevent misconceptions, The anthropological approach examines humans holistically—physical, cultural, and belief—through branches such as cultural, religious, and linguistic anthropology, with a focus on real religious practices in society, such as Clifford Geertz's work on santri-priyayi-abangan in Java. These two approaches complement each other to analyze the phenomenon of Islam across cultures, emphasizing holism, field observation, and the inseparable relationship between religion and culture (Nurcholish Madjid)

Abstract

Islamic civilization represents a complex and dynamic mosaic shaped by the interaction of religious doctrine, intellectual traditions, socio-political institutions, and diverse cultural expressions. This article aims to analyze Islam as a civilizational mosaic by examining its historical evolution, epistemological foundations, and contributions to global civilization. Employing a qualitative library research method, this study draws upon classical and contemporary scholarly works. The findings reveal that Islamic civilization developed through a process of cultural integration and intellectual exchange, enabling it to make significant contributions in science, philosophy, art, governance, and ethics. Understanding Islam as a mosaic civilization provides a more comprehensive perspective on its pluralistic character and reinforces its relevance in addressing contemporary global challenges.

Abstract

Islam is a religion revealed to humanity to convey teachings of humanity and justice for all people without distinction. Islamic teachings possess distinctive characteristics compared to previous religions, as they are universal, comprehensive, and capable of offering solutions to various social problems within society. Therefore, Islamic teachings need to be understood and implemented in a practical manner so that their values can be realized in everyday life. One of the fundamental aspects of Islamic teachings is morality, which etymologically derives from the Latin word mores, meaning habits or ways of life. Morality represents a set of values that regulate human behavior based on an understanding of what is considered good and bad. These moral values distinguish human beings from other creatures of God and place them in a noble position. Furthermore, the concept of humanity, according to the Indonesian Dictionary (KBBI), includes basic human characteristics, feelings that prevent individuals from committing reprehensible acts, and values that are worthy of humans in general. Thus, Islam positions morality and humanity as essential foundations for building a just, dignified, and civilized social life.

Abstract

This study explores the goals of education from the perspective of the Qur’an and Hadith, emphasizing the theological foundations, value concepts, and their relevance to the needs of Islamic education in the modern era. The research highlights that education in Islam is not merely focused on the acquisition of knowledge but also on character formation, intellectual development, and the strengthening of faith and piety toward Allah SWT. The Qur’an, through verses such as Al-‘Alaq: 1–5 and Adz-Dzariyat: 56, provides a philosophical framework that views education as an integral process combining spirituality and rationality. Meanwhile, the Hadith reinforces that knowledge must lead to humility and goodness that benefits humanity. The findings indicate that the objectives of Islamic education encompass four core aspects: aqidah (faith), ibadah (worship), akhlak (morality), and muamalah (social relations). These four dimensions serve as the foundation for forming Islamic character capable of adapting to global challenges without losing spiritual values. Therefore, Islamic education remains relevant and essential in building a civilized society in the midst of the digital era’s dynamics.
