Abstract

The evaluation of Indonesian for speakers of other languages (BIPA) is important in the age of globalisation to ensure the effectiveness of learning for foreign speakers. This study attempts to evaluate the competence of the 2019 edition of the Sahabatku Indonesia course materials, the official published book for basic level (A1) learners, by analysing the suitability of the materials against the competence standards, the representation of Indonesian culture, and the quality of presentation. Using qualitative content analysis, this study examined the text, images, and audio of the teaching materials based on 16 indicators of Muslich's competency standards and Permendikbudristek No. 22 of 2022. The results show that these teaching materials fall into the excellent category with a feasibility percentage of 90.625%, excelling in pre-discourse, exercises and presentation of materials. However, there are inconsistencies in cultural representation, acronyms without explanation and outdated currency illustrations. The results confirm that adjustments should be made to these aspects to improve their relevance and effectiveness in BIPA materials, to ensure alignment with cultural development and learner needs, and to provide guidance for the development of more effective BIPA materials in the future.

Abstract

One form of tourism that has grown significantly around the world is educational tourism. The potential of Indonesian for Foreign Speakers (BIPA) as an educational tourism destination offering educational experiences is discussed in this study. The study's methodology is a qualitative one because the issues under investigation concern actors in the tourism and education industries' attitudes and perspectives on BIPA as one of Bali's main interests for international tourists. Data were collected by interviewing a number of key informants including the BIPA program director of the Balai Bahasa Bali, BIPA teachers, a faculty member who is also involved in an international program at Udayana University, a number of individuals involved in the tourism industry, including the current and previous president of the Indonesian Tour Guide Association, tourism observers, and academics. The study's findings indicate that BIPA has the potential to become one of Bali's top draws for visitors looking to learn the Balinese and Indonesian languages.

Abstract

Indonesian Language for foreign speaker (BIPA) students are very interested in cultural values, the provision of cultural values is very important for BIPA students to enrich their language skills. Even cultural errors can be more serious than language errors. Trihita Karana is a philosophical value of living in harmony with God, nature, and fellow human beings. To teach BIPA students, it is necessary to have a genuine learning method so that BIPA students can absorb the culture significantly. The twenty BIPA learners in the State Polytechnic of Bali were conducted in this research. Questionnaire and observation methods were used in data collection. The data obtained were then analysed using a qualitative descriptive method. Based on the results of BIPA students' responses to several methods being tested, it can be concluded that 96.7% of respondents argued that the Trihita Karana cultural learning method was very feasible to support the BIPA learning process. There were several methods appreciated by BIPA students, including guessing pictures, running while dictation, observing, video documentation, immersion, and debate. Among these methods, the immersion method was the most favoured by BIPA students because they directly experienced it in daily life.

Abstract

This study aims to develop a prototype CCU dictionary for BIPA students from China. In addition to language, BIPA students need to understand Indonesian culture because language and culture are related. Language can be mastered well if the culture that accompanies it is also well understood. This research is a mixed study with the ADDIE model development method (Analysis, Design, Development, Implementation, and Evaluation) to the development stage due to the limited time in this study. Needs analysis is done by using questionnaires and literature study. Then, the design and development of this prototype is carried out by taking into account the aspects of the material, presentation, as well as language and readability. The results of this study revealed that most BIPA students experienced culture shock because of the differences in Indonesian culture and the culture of the student country. There are 45 cross cultural understandings that BIPA students from China need to understand. The cross cultural understanding consists of 16 cultural similarities and 29 cultural differences. These cultural comparisons are presented in this developed CCU dictionary prototype. This CCU dictionary prototype is designed to be a material for creating applications as electronic learning media that can be accessed offline and contain images, audio, audio visuals, and text in it. This CCU dictionary prototype contributes to the BIPA teaching and learning process and it is beneficial for students, teachers, and institutions.

Abstract

This study investigated the efficacy of Artificial Intelligence (AI)-based Text-to-Speech (TTS) technology in Indonesian pronunciation training for Foreign Speakers (BIPA), addressing a notable research gap concerning its specific effectiveness and learner perceptions. Employing a mixed-method quasi-experimental design with experimental (n=20) and control (n=20) groups, the research utilized pronunciation tests, perception questionnaires, and interviews. Based on the paired sample t-test, findings showed that AI TTS was significantly more effective than conventional methods in improving BIPA learners’ pronunciation in accuracy, fluency, and intelligibility. This efficacy is attributed to AI's capacity for immediate, personalized feedback and objective analysis. The qualitative data analysis revealed that learners reported overwhelmingly positive perceptions regarding AI TTS's effectiveness, engagement, and confidence-boosting impact, appreciating its non-judgmental and accessible nature. However, limitations emerged concerning voice naturalness, intonation accuracy, and the interpretation of contextual nuances. Concerns were also raised about potential over-reliance on AI, technical reliability, and data privacy. These findings strongly advocate for a blended learning approach in BIPA pronunciation instruction, strategically leveraging AI's strengths while preserving the essential value of human teaching for higher-order linguistic and cultural competence. The study contributes to applied linguistics by providing empirical insights into AI applications in second language acquisition beyond English contexts and offers practical guidance for developing adaptive, user-centered BIPA curricula and fostering responsible AI integration.

Abstract

AbstractThis study investigates psycholinguistic perspectives on interaction patterns that facilitate meaning acquisition in BIPA (Bahasa Indonesia bagi Penutur Asing/Indonesian for Speakers of Other Languages) learning at UIN Syarif Hidayatullah Jakarta. Employing a descriptive-analytic qualitative approach, the research examines how specific interaction patterns namely Student-Centered, Reciprocal, Collaborative, and Authentic Interactive support cognitive and linguistic processes in second language acquisition. Data were collected through classroom observations, interviews with two instructors and eight students from culturally diverse backgrounds, and thematic analysis of relevant teaching materials. The findings highlight the effectiveness of interactive and contextually enriched teaching strategies in improving students’ grasp of literal and contextual meanings, vocabulary mastery, and cultural competence. Drawing on Krashen’s Input Hypothesis and Vygotsky’s Zone of Proximal Development, this study emphasizes the importance of comprehensible input and scaffolding in fostering meaningful learning. The practical outcomes include recommendations for psycholinguistics-based teacher training programs and the design of interactive instructional materials tailored to the needs of culturally diverse learners. These findings contribute to advancing BIPA teaching practices and strengthening Indonesia’s cultural diplomacy initiatives.AbstrakPenelitian ini mengkaji wawasan psikolinguistik terhadap pola interaksi yang mendukung pemerolehan makna dalam pembelajaran BIPA (Bahasa Indonesia bagi Penutur Asing) di UIN Syarif Hidayatullah Jakarta. Abstract

Indonesian has become the official language of the UN. Many BIPA students want to learn Indonesian online. However, online learning creates obstacles such as time differences between teachers and BIPA students, internet connections, and providing less than optimal feedback. This research aims to develop m-learning with automatic feedback for BIPA level 2 learners. This research uses a 4D development model: define, design, develop and deploy. This study's instrument is  a questionnaire distributed to 2 validators and 18 BIPA learners. The results of this study are m-learning products that minimize internet connections; once installed, students only need to be connected to the internet when working on questions. In addition, m-learning is also equipped with automatic feedback that appears immediately after students answer questions. The results of the product trial show that students can use m-learning to learn anytime and anywhere, including in areas with minimal internet access. Automatic feedback in m-learning also helps students learn independently because they do not need to wait for feedback from teachers. The automatic feedback in M-learning is only for listening and reading questions while speaking and writing questions are still in the form of answer keywords or assessment rubrics that the teacher must correct. Based on expert validation and product trials with an average score of 88.8, we conclude that the development of m-learning is suitable for BIPA level 2 students.
