Abstract

Background: The incidence of low birth weight babies (LBW) is important because it is an indicator to measure a child's health status, and until now it is still one of the health problems generally faced by developing countries, including Indonesia. One of the risk factors for LBW is the level of hemoglobin (Hb). Hemoglobin is a parameter that is widely used to determine the prevalence of anemia. Objective: The purpose of this study was to analyze the relationship between hemoglobin levels of pregnant women and the incidence of low birth weight babies. Method: The research method used a cross-sectional design with a sample size of 49 respondents who were taken by simple random sampling method after fulfilling the inclusion and exclusion criteria at the Ngegong, Mangunharjo and Demangan Health Centers, Madiun City. Result: Data obtained through the patient's medical record. Data analysis in this study using the Chi Square test obtained a p- value of 0.02 <0.05 and OR = 0.75. Conclusion: So it can be concluded that there is a relationship between low hemoglobin levels and the incidence of low birth weight, where low hemoglobin levels have a 0.75 times higher risk of experiencing LBW. The Spearman rank correlation coefficient value of 0.445 indicates the strength of the relationship between these two variables in the moderate category.

Abstract

Background: The study investigates the combined effects of 7,12-dimethylbenz[a]anthracene (DMBA) and a high-fat diet (HFD) on hepatic gene expression in a breast cancer mouse model. Both DMBA and HFD are associated with oxidative stress, inflammation, and fibrosis, which may contribute to cancer progression. Methods: Female C57BL/6 mice were divided into three groups: standard diet (ND), ND + DMBA, and HFD + DMBA. Mice in the ND + DMBA and HFD + DMBA groups received DMBA injections weekly for six weeks. The HFD + DMBA group was also fed a high-fat diet for four weeks prior to DMBA administration. After a 12-week treatment period, liver tissues were collected and analyzed for NF-κB and CCN1/CYR61 gene expression using semi-quantitative RT-PCR.Results: The study revealed significant upregulation of NF-κB and CCN1/CYR61 expression in the ND + DMBA and HFD + DMBA groups compared to the control group. Notably, the HFD + DMBA group exhibited the highest expression levels of these genes, suggesting that the combination of HFD and DMBA synergistically exacerbates hepatic inflammation and fibrosis. Conclusion: The findings indicate that a high-fat diet in combination with carcinogen exposure can significantly enhance hepatic gene expression related to inflammation and fibrosis, highlighting the importance of dietary management in cancer prevention and treatment.

Abstract

Introduction: Volvulus in children is rare occurrence, it’s only about 3-5% cases in worldwide. Without abdominal radiological examination, it is difficult to make diagnosis of volvulus based on history and physical examination alone. The management procedures are also controversial, as some recommend a non-operative approach, while others recommend an operative approach in the form of Ladd's Procedure or laparoscopy. Sigmoidoscopy or a barium enema can be attempted as an initial treatment for sigmoid volvulus. Objective: The purpose of this case report is  to discuss why there was a delay in diagnosis of volvulus in this case and how to deal it. It also discusses the approach to diagnosis and management of volvulus in pediatric patients, both at the primary health center and the hospital, and why in this case. Case presentation: In this case, volvulus occurred in a pediatric patient who had sought treatment at a primary health center with a complaint of abdominal pain for nine days without improvement. The complaint was accompanied with constipation and fever. Due to limited facilities in primary health center, the patient was referred to the hospital. Result: At the hospital, after taking the history, performing physical examination, and conducting radiological examination and laboratory tests, the patient was diagnosed with ileus obstruction due to volvulus. Conclusion: Although volvulus is a rare case, volvulus should still be included as a differential diagnosis of abdominal pain in pediatric patients to avoid delayed diagnosis. Delay in diagnosis and management of volvulus can lead to serious complications and even life-threatening conditions

Abstract

Streptococcus pyogenes is a bacteria that can attack the epidermis and upper respiratory tract of humans, such as pharyngitis and impetigo. The rambusa plant (Passiflora foetida L) is famous for containing larvicide bioactive compounds. It also contains alkaloids, tannins, coumarins, procyanidins, triterpenoids, flavonoids, citric acid, acetogens, polyphenols, and saponins. A minority of individuals continue to employ this herb sporadically as an antibacterial agent. Intrigued by this phenomenon, the researchers set out to examine the effect of rambusa fruit (Passiflora foetida) administration on the Streptococcus pyogenes bacterium development inhibitory zone. This research uses Only Post Test Control Group Design, exclusively experimental.  The population for this study was Streptococcus pyogenes bacteria obtained from the microbiology laboratory of the Faculty of Medicine, Wijaya Kusuma University, Surabaya.  There were 24 samples in this study, with four repetitions per sample and consisting of 6 groups, including a treatment group with 4 subgroups (10%, 20%, 40%, and 80%), as well as two control groups.  The Mann-Whitney U test showed that a concentration of 80% in the Passiflora foetida fruit extract treatment group resulted in an inhibitory zone diameter of 8.5 mm, which was statistically significant (P<0.05). The conclusion is that administration of rambusa fruit extract (Passiflora foetida) can inhibit bacterial growth of Streptococcus pyogenes, with the average highest inhibitory zone diameter being 8.5 mm
