Abstract

This research aims to analyze the traumatic realism in the poem Ariel (1965), written by Sylvia Plath. This research uses Michel Rothberg's (2000) theory to show traces of trauma realized in literary works and uses Abelson's (1995) theory to find extreme experiences that traumatize individuals. Researchers use an approach or reference based on the biographical book "The Cambridge Introduction to Sylvia Plath," written by Gill (2008), to find a correlation between Plath's life and her writing in Ariel. This research uses a qualitative descriptive design to reveal and investigate the phenomenon of trauma and the forms or modes of extreme experiences in Sylvia Plath's life that are realized in Ariel. Data was obtained from textual sentences or words in poetry that refer to events or happenings in Sylvia Plath's life. Based on Spradley's theory and analysis, we think that Ariel's poetry is closely related to events in Sylvia Plath's life.

Abstract

This research describes the use of the dubbing and subtitling method through film in motivating students in English speaking/conversation. This research is library research. The analysis shows that the video project of dubbing in the film is engaging, motivating, and effective in improving language abilities. However, film media using dubbing can be combined with subtitling methods to make English learning more interesting, imaginative, and engaging. It means that both dubbing and subtitling can be used to practice English conversation skills with film. They can be applied to motivate students and even improve pronunciation and vocabulary mastery. Dubbing involves imitating the actors’ voices and acting out dialogue scenes to practice students' pronunciation. Subtitling involves the use of Indonesian language transcription (Indonesian subtitling version) and English transcription (English subtitling version) for helping students to understand the vocabulary meaning in the dialogue. To motivate students’ English speaking/conversation skills with those methods, students can choose their favorite films and actors, choose short film materials and search for subtitles, and practice English speaking in monologs or conversations in pairs. So, students can be interested and motivated, even improving their overall language learning experience. The previous studies also indicate the use of the dubbing/subtitling method in film improves students' motivation and enthusiasm in English speaking/conversation.

Abstract

This article aims to analyze the meaning of love and longing for literary works in the form of poems contained in the Diwan Tarjuman Al-Ashwaq by a Sufi named Ibn Arabi. The theory used is Riffaterre’s Semiotic theory. Written ada sources in the form of journals, books, and articles that are relevant to the topic of discussion. Tarjuman Al-Ashwaq contains poems that contain elements of love and longing, which are symbolized by the figure of a girl or woman who sparked controversy in the history of Islamic literary works because his poems were considered to contain the meaning of Ibn Arabi’s Sensual love for women. However, the results of the analysis show that the meaning carried out by the people at that time was wrong, Ibn Arabi only used women as a source of inspiration to represent his love and longing for Allah. Keywords: Ibn Arabi, Poetry, Tarjuman al-Ashwaq
