Abstract

This study examined the effects of irregular migration on the well-being of the migrant households in Delta and Edo States, Nigeria. A cross-sectional research design and purposive sampling technique were adopted.  Questionnaire was employed as the research instrument for this study with 716 respondents deemed usable. The theoretical and analytical framework that directs this study combines the New Economics of Labour Migration theory with the neo-classical theory, making evident their shared premise that irregular migration can be seen as a household-calculated strategy to maintain rural well-being. With the use of the Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) Version 23, the acquired data were examined using percentages, means, standard deviations, Pearson's coefficient of correlation, and linear regression analysis. The well-being of migrant households in the Delta and Edo States is positively and considerably influenced by irregular movement, according to the study. The study also showed that irregular migration improves welfare and means of subsistence, increases financial remittances, lowers family poverty, and promotes the construction of infrastructure in the home areas of migrants in the Delta and Edo States. The study came to the conclusion that, for all people, including those in the Delta and Edo States, irregular migration is an unavoidable human phenomenon in the modern day. To ensure that migrants understand the ramifications of irregular migration and the value of regular migration to the state and communities, not simply their family members, the government should actively engage migrants and maintain contact with them, rather than actively discouraging migration. The study concluded that many of the properties constructed in the neighbourhoods are owned or occupied by the immigrants and their families; it is undeniable that irregular migration has had an impact on numerous communities in the Delta and Edo States. Based on the study's findings and conclusions, the study made several recommendations, including that the governments of Delta and Edo State should appoint honourable people, notable figures, and bright academics to develop and carry out policies aimed at promoting migrants' interest in the establishment of infrastructure, including healthcare facilities, educational institutions, transportation, renewable energy, solar power, and modular refineries. In the foreseeable future, this will significantly lessen irregular migration in the Delta and Edo States.

Abstract

This study investigates the preferences and political behaviour of first-time voters in the 2024 elections, focusing on how religious beliefs, rationalism, and social media impact their political judgments. The primary objective of this research is to explore the factors influencing the political decisions of Generation Z voters, who constitute a significant demographic in the electoral process. The study aims to assess the extent to which social media platforms shape political awareness and decision-making while also examining the role of digital literacy in fostering informed political participation. The study employs a qualitative descriptive method using a cluster random sampling strategy, with approximately 204 University Ahmad Dahlan (UAD) students as respondents. The findings indicate that social media platforms, particularly Instagram and TikTok, have become the dominant sources of political information, reflecting a shift from traditional to digital media. First-time voters prioritize politicians with clear visions, goals, and concrete work programs over those engaging in negative campaigns. Additionally, the study highlights the challenges young voters face, including money politics and low political engagement at the local level. Despite these obstacles, the strong rejection of money politics and the commitment to clean democracy among youth voters demonstrate their potential to drive ethical and inclusive political reforms.Based on these findings, this study recommends enhancing digital literacy programs to equip young voters with critical thinking skills when consuming political content online. Future research should further explore the long-term effects of social media-driven political engagement and investigate how different digital platforms influence voter behaviour across diverse socio-political contexts. Expanding the study to a broader demographic beyond university students may also provide deeper insights into the evolving dynamics of youth political participation.

Abstract

Child violence is a critical issue within the 2030 Sustainable Development Goals, requiring a collaborative approach among agencies for effective management. This study examines the collaborative governance processes implemented by the South Sumatra Provincial Women's Empowerment and Child Protection Agency, the South Sumatra Regional Police, the Class I Palembang Correctional Service, and the Class I Palembang Child Correctional Institution. Utilizing a qualitative methodology, this research gathered primary and secondary data through observation, interviews, and documentation. Analysis based on the collaboration process theory by Ansell Gash (2008) indicates that collaborative governance has been effective, characterized by face-to-face dialogue, trust-building, joint commitment, and shared understanding, as well as the achievement of interim results. However, improvements are needed in inter-agency communication and the development of Standard Operating Procedures (SOP) for handling child violence cases, to strengthen the collaborative process and achieve sustainable outcomes.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the influence of civil engagement on the political preferences of the people in Kampung Naga during the 2024 regional head election process. Political preferences can reveal factors that influence a person's decision to participate in the regional head election. The study used a mixed method through the distribution of questionnaires and in-depth interviews with residents of Kampung Naga. The results showed that there was an influence between variables of 19%. This influence is very small. The researcher then studied it using a qualitative research approach. Some of the main reasons include traditional leaders who highly respect and give freedom to the community to choose, social changes in the form of modernization and changes in social values and access to various information such as social media. Factors such as personal preferences, family influences, and access to external information play a bigger role in shaping voter behavior. In the future, there needs to be further attention regarding social and cultural changes that can influence political behavior in traditional village communities. The recommendation in this study is to compare the implementation of elections in other indigenous communities in order to obtain comprehensive information regarding the influence of external culture and leadership on community behavior.

Abstract

This study discusses changes in the coalition pattern of political parties in the leadership period of President Joko Widodo who was elected in 2014 and 2019, this research uses a descriptive qualitative method with a literature/literature study approach, so the results show that in the first period the coalition pattern that was built was an ideological coalition pattern, but this pattern changed to transactional pragmatism, because the Coalition of political parties pro-president Joko Widodo's government experienced successive defeats in parliament, One of the defeats did not get a leadership seat in parliament because it lost the number of votes in parliament, so the ideological coalition pattern turned into a transactional pragmatic coalition, where President Joko Widodo attracted opposition parties, namely PPP, Golkar and PAN, to join the pro-government coalition, by sharing ministerial seats, with the aim that the government coalition could win in parliament in determining policies. In the second period of Joko Widodo's presidency, he became more pragmatic because Prabowo, who was Joko Widodo's rival, was drawn into a coalition with the government by giving Prabowo the position of Minister of Defense, so that the impact caused by democracy became unstable, because opposition parties were getting weaker and many policies in their determination were controversial, including the Job Creation Law, revision of the KPK Law, the IKN Law and the dissolution of organizations considered radical by the government.

The results of this study show that in real and internal comparison, each type of student political choice between rational and non-rational (irrational) preferences/types is contrasting but weak, namely 60.1% compared to 11.9%, primordial type 55.6% and non-primordial type 15.3%, pragmatic type 59.8% and non-pragmatic type 15.3%, while emotional type is 60.1% and non-emotional type 11.9%. Externally and in real terms, there is no dominant (weak) difference. However, the negative preferences of the primordial and emotional types were still more prominent, namely 55.6% and 60.1% (both less strong), so that the average difference in percentage with non-primordialism and non-emotional was 44.25% (less strong)

Abstract

This study aims to identify gender injustice in child marriage through a literature review and bibliometric approach. The data analysed come from the Scopus and Web of Science databases, covering 126 journals published between 1990 and 2024. Bibliometric methods were applied using R Studio (Biblioshiny) and VOSviewer software to identify research trends, collaboration patterns, and geographical and topical distributions in the existing literature. The results show an increase in the number of publications each year, with the United States, India, and the United Kingdom being the countries with the highest research contributions.  Author analysis identified Koski A, Na N, and Sethi D as the most productive authors. At the same time, McGill University and Mashhad University of Medical Sciences had the highest number of publications. The study recommends several areas for further research. First, further research can conduct a more in-depth investigation into the socioeconomic impacts of child marriage, especially in high-risk regions. Second, Multidisciplinary research involving the legal field to strengthen regulations, the health field to mitigate reproductive impacts, the education field to encourage access to learning, and the economy for family empowerment can provide a comprehensive and sustainable solution to the issue of child marriage.

Abstract

Kampung Keluarga Berkualitas (KB) in Manyaran Village was established in response to the challenges faced by the community, namely the low awareness of the importance of using long-term contraceptives and the prevalence of marriage at a young age.  This study aims to determine the active participation of Manyaran Village community in the Quality Family Village program. This study uses Cohen and Uphoff's theory of community participation to look at community participation in four stages: when making decisions, when carrying out activities, when utilizing program results, and when evaluating the program. This research uses qualitative methods by collecting data through interviews, observations, and documents. The results showed that: 1) Decision Making: The community has not been fully involved in decision-making, especially during meetings; 2) Activity Implementation: Tribina Kampung KB activities have not been implemented evenly in all hamlets; 3) Utilization of Results: The community benefits from additional food for children, vitamins, and new knowledge about the family. In addition, the establishment of Rumah Data Ku also provides social benefits; 4) Evaluation: The community has not actively participated in evaluating the program.
