Abstract

In this paper, the authors investigate argument activities of the journalism of The Conversation Indonesia (TCID). Taking into consideration five elements of argumentation —philosophical component, theoretical component, empirical component, analytical component, and practical component—this study identifying patterns argument that characterize of 41 science articles in 2021 by using qualitative content analysis. To complete the data, we conducted in-depth interviews with the chief of editor/content director of TCID. We also conducted an extensive review of current literature. This paper finds that most of the science articles reported by TCID uses 3 component arguments, namely the philosophical component, the empirical component, and the practical component. This shows that the authors only have a degree of wanting to form knowledge at a moderate level. Other data shows not all writers present predictive arguments in themselves. Only 80% of authors present predictive arguments. We argue that science journalism practiced by TCID is not passionate about building knowledge among its readers. It has not succeeded in promoting Indonesian science journalism as a means of forming readers' knowledge. Therefore, strong efforts are needed to ensure that science journalism can ground research results that shape readers' knowledge.

Abstract

The presence of development journalists is needed to criticize, study, evaluate, and report on the relevance of development projects. The press, as the fourth pillar of democracy, has a very crucial role in conveying criticism. The research aims to analyze the influence of society's information needs (X1), politics (X2), and government (X3) on the quality of development messages (Y1) and news (Y2). The research methodology uses a mixed-methods approach with a sequential explanation strategy. The  research population covers  television news viewers and observers. The research sample consisted of 110 respondents who were viewers and observers of news broadcasts in mainstream media. The research results show: (1) there is a significant influence between the information need variable based on the community perspective (X1) on the quality of development messages (Y1); (2) there is no significant influence between the variable information needs based on the perspective of the business world (X2), politics (X3), and government (X4) on news quality (Y2), but there is an influence of public information needs (X1) on news quality (Y2). Based on information from press representative institutions, there was a decline in quality caused by: (1) complaints of violations from the Indonesian Broadcasting Institution; (2) less attractive news packaging; (4) social media competition; (5) in-depth news analysis; (6) intervention from stakeholders; (7) lack of cross-sectoral support; and (8) the small compensation received by journalists. In conclusion, information needs based on society's perspective do not influence the quality of development messages but do influence the quality of news.

This condition significantly changes the business world and offers integrated marketing communications strategy options. This is a qualitative research in the interpretive paradigm. Using netnography or virtual ethnography or digital ethnography methods, this research attempts to explore and analyze the complex meaning of Indonesia's latest social media statistical data, compiled from We Are Social and The Global Statistics. We support data from Pew Research Center, Statista, Deloitte, Forbes, Insider Intelligence, Forrester, LinkedIn, GlobalWebIndex, CMO Survey, and the FGD (Focus Group Discussion) method. The analytical tools used are Computer-Mediated Communication Theory, Everett Rogers' Theory of Diffusion of Innovation, etc. In 2024, the social media marketing mix (SMMM) will be dominated by Artificial Intelligence (A.I.) including Generative A.I. and ChatGPT technology, as well as creative content that is entertaining and capable of attracting various kinds of people, and creates social polemics too. The principle, "Give what they want, take what you need," is used to get support from Gen Z and Millennials. This principle is needed to build trust and loyalty. Many companies will carry out promotions focusing only on social media platforms that provide benefits, and social media trends in  Indonesia include Instagram, Facebook, TikTok, and Twitter. The promotional message will consist of product quality, price, and comfort. These three aspects will also be communicated extensively using A.I. technology and ChatGPT.

Abstract

The utilization of Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) machines is essential for accurate disease diagnoses, necessitating radiographers to undergo a ten-day training regimen. While existing studies often concentrate on interpersonal communication in healthcare, this research explores the reciprocal development of reflexive action and interpretation during MRI training in Indonesian hospitals, employing the Coordinated Management of Meaning (CMM) Theory and integrating intercultural communication obstacles. Employing participatory observation, key informant interviews, and focus group discussions, the study unveils that trainers employ both verbal and non-verbal communication, including orientation, empathy, and dynamic interactions. The results highlight reciprocal, proactive communication strategies between trainers and trainees, emphasizing mindfulness, emotional vulnerability mitigation, honest communication, and the cultivation of functional behaviors. This research contributes not only to health communication literature, particularly MRI training but also advances practical insights into intercultural communication research.

Abstract

The video of Felicya Angelista discussing the Israeli-Palestinian conflict sparked controversy, with criticism directed at her for seemingly supporting Israel. The use of the word "war" without context and footage of Hamas attacking Israeli citizens contributed to this backlash, leading to calls to boycott Scarlett products. This research, utilizing Roland Barthes’ Semiotic Theory, aimed to analyze the denotation, connotation, and myths within the video's text, assessing its impact on Felicya's reputation and Scarlett products. Qualitative content analysis was conducted using data from Felicya's Instagram videos, netizen comments, and online news reports. The findings revealed denotatively that Felicya is crying and wiping her tears, Israeli civilians attacked by Hamas, and Felicya stood on humanity and peace. The denotational meanings were Felicya expressed sadness for the victims especially parents and children, and Felicya appearing neutral. However, connotatively, she was perceived to support Israel. Myths surrounding the expression of sadness, artists' involvement in the conflict, and the conflict's religious nature were also identified. The video faced criticism from netizens, leading to calls for boycotting Scarlett products due to Felicya's perceived alignment with Israel. In summary, while the video portrayed Felicya's neutrality denotatively, it connotatively suggested support for Israel, contributing to backlash and calls for boycotts.

Abstract

The internalization of Pancasila values among the younger generation is significant for a more in-depth study ahead of the 2024 presidential election in Indonesia. This has become a hot issue as material for study, especially after the 2024 presidential and vice presidential candidate debate took place. This research aims at 3 things: First, to inform the importance of internalizing the Pancasila values among the younger generation to welcome the 2024 election; Second, to instill Pancasila values in the younger generation in responding to currently developing political dynamics; Third, to strengthen implementation of Pancasila values in political ethics by socializing them among the younger generation to realize peaceful elections in 2024.  The mixed method used for this research is quantitative data collection, using qualitative descriptive techniques with text analysis. The distribution of questionnaires conducted directly and online is based on the theory of social reality construction, with the concept of internalization being the focus. This research shows 3 things: First, the younger generation received information regarding the importance of internalizing Pancasila values in creating peaceful elections in 2024. Second, researchers succeeded in socializing the effort to instil Pancasila values in the younger generation in responding to political dynamics in the 2024 elections. Third, ethical politics in peaceful elections have been socialized by strengthening Pancasila values to make the situation more conducive to implementing peaceful elections. It is hoped that this research can become a consistent and sustainable national movement for the upcoming elections and prepare the younger generation to have a peaceful and constructive mentality.

Abstract

This study focuses on how young people in Vietnam use and feel satisfied with artificial intelligence algorithms on TikTok. The research paper aims to investigate and better understand how this group of young people interact and use the TikTok platform, with the integration of artificial intelligence algorithms. The study was conducted based on the results of an initial questionnaire survey on a simple random sample based on the germ development sampling method among students in Vietnam. The quantitative data is analyzed based on SPSS software. The results of the study show that the majority of young people in Vietnam have a basic knowledge and understanding of artificial intelligence algorithms on TikTok. They use them to find engaging content, watch videos, and engage with the community on the platform. However, the study also found some risks associated with using artificial intelligence algorithms on TikTok. It is a risk of privacy violation and interference with personal freedom when algorithms can track, analyze and collect the personal data of users. Thereby, the research team analyzed the data based on the use and satisfaction theory. In summary, this study has mentioned how the young public in Vietnam use and feel satisfied with the artificial intelligence algorithm on TikTok. In addition to the benefits, attention should be paid to the ethical and privacy issues associated with the use of this technology to protect the interests of users.
