Abstract

The rapid development of digital technology has reshaped Islamic communication by providing flexible access to religious knowledge and shifting traditional structures of authority. This study examines the relevance of Uses and Gratifications Theory in explaining the motivations of Muslim audiences in engaging with Muhammadiyah digital da’wah in East Java. This research applies a qualitative descriptive approach through documentation, observation, and textual analysis of official Muhammadiyah platforms such as tvMu, PWMU TV, pwmu.co, and PAI UMSurabaya Media during the period 2023 to 2024. The findings show that users demonstrate varied motivations aligned with key dimensions of the theory. These include the search for credible religious knowledge, appreciation of inspirational messages, expression of Islamic identity, participation in online religious communities, and efforts to obtain emotional comfort. Educational content through YouTube and website publications supports cognitive needs, while short video formats on emerging platforms strengthen emotional engagement and identity formation. Interactive features help build communal cohesion, affirming the emergence of digital religiosity. Although digital media democratizes access and expands the scope of da’wah, challenges remain, particularly the fragmentation of understanding and potential spread of inaccurate information. This study emphasizes the need for Muhammadiyah to strengthen participatory, creative, and multidimensional content in order to enhance digital literacy and sustain effective da’wah in contemporary society.

Abstract

This article analyzes the dual role of Islam in Sudan’s modern history, emphasizing its capacity to unify communities while simultaneously deepening political and social fragmentation. Covering the period from independence in 1956 to the present conflict, it traces how Islamic references shaped legitimacy, governance, and violence. The study employs a qualitative and historical-critical method, drawing on constitutions, Sharia statutes, scholarly works, international reports, and archival news, with triangulation and process tracing ensuring reliability and contextual depth. The findings demonstrate that Islam has repeatedly been instrumentalized to consolidate political power. Early on, Sufi networks such as the Ansar and Khatmiyya promoted cohesion but also entrenched rivalries that destabilized politics. Under Jaafar Nimeiri and the National Islamic Front, state-led Islamization, epitomized by the September Laws, institutionalized exclusivity and marginalized both non-Muslims and dissenting Muslims. This framework intensified conflicts in Darfur and South Sudan, linking Islamization to displacement, atrocities, and gender-based violence. By contrast, inclusive Islamic discourses stressing justice and Maqasid al-Shariah fostered civic trust and opened pathways for negotiation, as reflected in the Juba Peace Agreement. After the 2019 revolution, reforms aimed at separating religion from the state suggested a shift toward inclusivity. Yet renewed war reopened avenues for political instrumentalization: the Sudanese Armed Forces drew on Islamist currents to revive jihadist rhetoric, while the Rapid Support Forces positioned themselves as anti-Islamist actors mixing religious symbolism with secular claims. These dynamics reveal the enduring malleability of Islam in Sudanese politics. The study concludes that inclusive framings encourage unity, while monopolization entrenches division, situating Sudan’s experience within broader debates on religion, authoritarianism, and nation-building in divided societies.

Abstract

The phenomenon of rising religious populism, digital radicalism, and theological disinformation in the post-truth era has shifted religious authority from clerics and academics to a digital space full of emotions and ideological biases. This condition gave rise to a new form of ghuluw (extremism) that was not only theological, but also epistemological. This research aims to answer the main question: what is the meaning of "wa lā taghlū fī dīnikum" in Q.S. An-Nisā' (4):171 can be interpreted through Fazlur Rahman's double movement hermeneutics to strengthen the paradigm of religious moderation in the post-truth era? Using a qualitative approach based on literature studies, this study utilizes Fazlur Rahman's major work Themes of the Qur'an and Islam and Modernity as a theoretical foundation, and is supported by classical and contemporary interpretations for textual analysis. The data analysis technique is carried out through two stages of double movement: understanding the historical context of the revelation (the first movement) and relevanting it to modern socio-religious conditions (the second movement). The results of the study show that the prohibition of ghuluw in the verse has universal moral relevance as a warning against the absolutism of interpretation and the claim of the single truth in the age of disinformation. Through the double movement approach, it is found that religious moderation is not an ideological compromise, but a rational expression of Qur'anic ethics that integrates faith, reason, and humanity. This research offers an epistemological synthesis in the form of "contextual-moderate interpretation", which is an integrative interpretive model between texts, contexts, and social morals. This study recommends the development of further research on the integration of Rahman's hermeneutics with maqāṣid al-sharī'ah and religious digital literacy theory to strengthen the epistemic resilience of the ummah in the midst of a global crisis of truth

Abstract

This study conducts a scientific exegesis (Tafsir ‘ilmi) of Qur’an 16:68-69, which describes divine inspiration bestowed upon honeybees and the production of a healing drink from their abdomens. Using a descriptive-analytical qualitative approach and the tahlil method, classical and modern interpretation sources were integrated with contemporary findings in apidology and apitherapy. Major exegetes (Ibn Kathir, al-Tabari, al-Qurtubi, Saayid Qutb, Tantawi Jauhri, et al.) Unanimously interpreted “awha” as divinely instilled instinct accurately anticipating modern discoveries of hexagonal hive geometry, waggle dance communication, and age based polytheism. Scientific evidence confirms that bee products (honey, royal jelly, propolis, pollen, venom, beeswax) contain bioactive compounds with proven antioxidant, antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, immunomodulatory, and wound-healing properties for validating the Qur’anic claim of “healing for people” (Syifaul linnas). The findings illustrate profound harmony between seventh-century revelation and twenty-first-century biology and medicine, affirming the Qur’an’s role as both theological guidance and empirically verifiable natural observation while underscoring bee’s ecological and therapeutic significance.

Abstract

This study examines the ethical dimensions of leadership and the political crises that occurred during the caliphate of Ali ibn Abi Thalib (656–661 CE) within the framework of early Islamic social history and civilization. The governance of Ali unfolded amid a profound crisis of legitimacy and communal disintegration following the assassination of Caliph Utsman bin Affan. This research employs a descriptive qualitative approach, integrating historical and sociological analysis of classical sources alongside contemporary studies, using a library-based research design.  The findings indicate that Ali’s leadership was rooted in principles of justice, knowledge, and high moral integrity. However, this political idealism frequently confronted a power landscape shaped by intrigue and competing interests. The Battles of Jamal and Shiffin, as well as the arbitration (taḥkim), illustrate how political conflict transformed into theological and social crises that contributed to the emergence of early Islamic sects such as the Khawarij, the Shi’a, and the Murjiʾah. These findings affirm that the leadership ethics of Ali ibn Abi Thalib represent an Islamic political vision grounded in justice, consultation, and the public welfare, while also offering moral insights for the development of contemporary Islamic leadership.

Abstract

This study examines the revitalization of Islamic education through the concept of the Tawhid paradigm proposed by Ismail Raji al-Faruqi. Using a library research method, the study explores five principles of unity: God, creation, truth and knowledge, life, and humanity, as an integrative framework between revelation and reason. The findings indicate that the Tawhid paradigm serves as both an epistemological and axiological foundation for reconstructing Islamic education to overcome the dichotomy between religious and scientific knowledge. Through the Islamization of knowledge project, al-Faruqi proposes twelve strategic steps for educational reform, including mastery of modern sciences, reexamination of classical heritage, development of an integrative curriculum, and research methodologies based on divine revelation. This approach fosters learners who are balanced intellectually, spiritually, and morally. The revitalization of Islamic education based on the Tawhid paradigm aims to restore the unity of knowledge and faith, shaping a generation of ulul albab capable of integrating scientific rationality with ethical and spiritual awareness in facing the challenges of modernity.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze sunnatullah as a principle of divine order from a philosophical perspective and examine its relevance to the development of modern Islamic education. The research focuses on understanding the essence of sunnatullah, exploring the views of classical and contemporary Muslim scholars, and identifying its implications for shaping an educational paradigm that is adaptive to contemporary challenges. This research employs a qualitative method with a library research approach, involving an in-depth study of primary and secondary sources such as Qur’anic exegesis, classical Islamic scholarship, and relevant academic works. Data were analyzed using descriptive-analytical and philosophical-critical approaches to reveal the ontological, epistemological, and axiological dimensions of sunnatullah. The findings indicate that sunnatullah encompasses not only the immutable laws governing the universe but also social and historical laws that can be studied and applied. These findings affirm that the principle of divine order serves as a conceptual foundation for developing Islamic education that is integrative, rational, transformative, and responsive to modern challenges.

Abstract

This study examined the concept of empathy (ta‘āṭuf) within Islamic ethical teachings through a thematic–narrative analysis of authenticated prophetic traditions. The research aimed to clarify how empathy is constructed in the Prophet’s teachings and how these constructions intersect with contemporary psychological theories of empathetic behavior. A qualitative, library-based design was employed, drawing upon primary sources from Sahih al-Bukhari and Sahih Muslim, supported by Qur’anic exegesis, classical commentaries, and modern psychological literature. The results indicated that empathy in Islamic tradition is conceptualized through a multilayered framework encompassing emotional resonance, compassion, justice, solidarity, and collective responsibility. The well-known “one body” metaphor illustrated the believers’ interconnectedness and emphasized empathy as a moral obligation rather than a merely emotional response. The study concludes that prophetic teachings provide a holistic model of empathy that is both spiritually grounded and behaviorally actionable. This contribution enriches the broader discourse on religion and moral psychology by showing how classical Islamic ethics may inform contemporary discussions on empathy’s role in fostering compassionate and cohesive societies. Future research will benefit from comparing Islamic models of empathy with those of other religious traditions or examining how digital environments shape empathetic practices within Muslim communities.
