Abstract

Critical thinking is an intellectual process in making ideas and concepts logically and allows students to analyze their thinking in making choices and drawing appropriate conclusions. However, in fact, in the observations made by lecturers on students, it is still difficult to understand and complete the tasks given by the lecturers, students' critical thinking skills are still low. This study aims to improve critical thinking skills through the “student as researchers” strategy. This study uses quantitative analysis with a one group pretest posttest design. The sample in this study were Biology Education students in semester 3 (three) class A who took the Learning Media course. Data were obtained from critical thinking questionnaires and observation sheets. The data were analyzed through significance test and Gain Normalization. The research data shows that students' critical thinking abilities have increased by 0.70 in the high category after participating in learning with the "Student as Researcher" strategy. The indicator for compiling “able to express ideas/ideas” is an indicator that has the highest increase compared to other critical thinking indicators, which is 0.79 in the high category. It can be concluded that the “student as researchers” strategy can improve students' critical thinking skills

Abstract

Lombok Island is part of Indonesia which has a high vulnerability to drought. The area that often experienced drought severely on Lombok Island is North Lombok Regency. This study wants to examine the effect of climate change on drought characteristics in this region using the standardized precipitation index method using four rain stations in the North Lombok region rainfall recording data of 20 years (1999-2018). The analyses were taken into two groups of a 10-year time scale, 1999-2008 and 2009-2018, to overview both of the 10-years drought characteristics. Drought index values were observed on a period of 1-month (SPI1), 3-months (SPI3), and 6-months (SPI6) to get the map of drought duration, drought magnitude, drought intensity, and relative frequency. The results show that the drought characteristics in Lombok showed a decrease significantly in all measurement parameters used. The SPI3 results have shown the drought duration was decreasing in the last 10 years by 87%, from 2,43 to 0.03 months. The strength of the drought decreased by 88%, from -1.03 to 0.12 (severely dry to normal). Then the drought intensity became lower up to 87% from -0.22 to -0.03 monthly, and the relative frequency of drought events decreased by 83%. Signs of the decline were further followed by the same decreasing trends in the 6-month drought index, SPI6. The decrease in the drought parameter index illustrates that climate change impact has reduced the risk of drought disaster on the island of Lombok in the future

Abstract

The preference for using the right or left hand for different uni-manual tasks is known as handedness. Handedness as functional asymmetry has a correlation with the asymmetric brain. Most types of tools have been developed for right-handed use, leading to different adaptations between left-handed and right-handed individuals. Visuospatial, as one of the cognitive processes, is the ability to visualize two- and or three-dimensional objects. This function allows individuals to remember, plan for the future, navigate, and make decisions, thus visuospatial is one of the primary mental aspects in humans. The aim of this study was to assess whether being left-handed was associated with visuospatial ability. Respondents in this study were 148 adult individuals who lived in Lampung Province. Handedness was assessed based on a questionnaire of self-confessed and hand preference of 10 daily activities. Hand grip performance was measured by using a hand dynamometer. The ability of visuospatial was assessed by using the Right-Left Discrimination method. The results of the visuospatial ability test showed that left-handed individuals had a better average score of visuospatial than right-handed ones (44.00 > 40.86). Males had better visuospatial ability than females (estimate = -0.0768; p-value: 0.0481). The influence of handedness on visuospatial ability was discussed

Abstract

This study aims to determine the cognitive load of students in online-based plant anatomy learning. The research was conducted at the Biology Education Study Program at a State University in Palembang, Indonesia. The research subjects were Biology Education students (n=73) who contracted the plant anatomy course. The instrument used to determine students' mental effort in understanding plant anatomy material is a questionnaire with a Likert scale with five answer choices: very easy (VE), easy (E), moderate (Md), difficult (D), and very difficult (VD). The aspects measured are (i) identifying the type of tissues and its characteristics by observing 2D and 3D images; (ii) analyzing the interrelationship of tissues structure and it function; (iii) identifying the structure of the constituent tissues in several plant organs, and (iv) spatial thinking related to the structure of plant tissues. The research data shows that the highest percentage in all aspects is in the medium category (MD), which ranges between (31.14% - 47.69%), which means that the learning carried out is not too burdensome for students in these four aspects. However, the data also shows that in the second aspect, namely the ability to analyze the relationship between structure and function, 31.64% of students stated that it was difficult. This is due to the complexity of the material related to the structure and function and the ineffectiveness of the media used in online-based learning
