Abstract

The need to strengthen students’ analytical, evaluative, and creative thinking in Science Education has prompted the development of instructional tools that go beyond rote memorization. This research aims to develop Student Worksheets using a Problem-Based Learning approach to improve Higher-Order Thinking Skills among fifth-grade elementary students. The study employed a research and development method adapted from the Plomp model, consisting of preliminary research, prototyping, and assessment phases. Data were collected through expert validation, teacher and student response questionnaires, and learning outcome tests involving 30 students in one elementary school. The developed worksheet demonstrated very high validity in content, design, and language. Practicality scores from individual, small group, and classroom trials showed consistent results in the “very practical” category. Effectiveness was confirmed through a notable increase in student scores from pre-test to post-test, reaching a class mastery level of 80 percent. The findings suggest that the worksheet successfully fosters student engagement in scientific inquiry while enhancing cognitive skills. This product offers a practical and pedagogically sound tool to support active learning in elementary Science Education and contributes to the broader development of inquiry-based learning strategies in the classroom.

Abstract

The increasingly rapid development of digital technology requires the world of education to adapt to various innovations, one of which is the use of artificial intelligence (AI) in learning. However, in reality, many schools still use conventional, less interactive teaching materials, thus not optimally improving 21st-century skills, particularly critical thinking and communication skills. This research aims to produce a suitable and effective artificial intelligence-based e-learning module for improving students' critical thinking and communication skills. The research employed a mixed methods approach with an embedded experimental model design, consisting of several stages: introduction, design, development, and interpretation. The research subjects were 60 students of class X of SMA Negeri 5 Sigi. The research instruments included expert validation sheets, cognitive assessment tests (functioning as pretest and posttest), observation sheets on student communication skills and observation sheets on student activities during the learning process, and interview guidelines after the learning process. This study concludes that the development of e-learning modules containing artificial intelligence is effective and feasible for use in improving students' critical thinking and communication skills.

Abstract

Improving critical thinking is an essential 21st-century learning skill, and educational products that nurture it help students advance. Research identifies problem-based learning (PBL) as a highly effective instructional model for fostering critical thinking. This article reviews journal publications from 2019–2025 that explore the development of science teaching materials using the PBL model and their impact on students’ critical thinking abilities. The study aims to provide a comprehensive overview of the types of PBL-based science teaching materials, their effectiveness, and their influence on critical thinking skills. Using the PRISMA literature review method, the researchers conducted identification and screening of abstracts and full texts from 1,200 journal articles, ultimately selecting 12 relevant studies. Analysis of these studies indicates that PBL-based science teaching materials significantly enhance students’ critical thinking, particularly at junior high and high school levels. The findings underscore that integrating PBL into science teaching materials supports inquiry, problem-solving, and analytical reasoning. Consequently, adopting PBL-based resources in classrooms can serve as a strategic approach to strengthen students’ critical thinking processes and better prepare them for complex real-world challenges. This review affirms that PBL-driven science instruction is a powerful tool for 21st-century education.

Abstract

Schizophrenia is a complex psychiatric disorder treated primarily with antipsychotics, yet their impact on clinical outcomes such as hospital stay and excitement symptoms, measured by the Positive and Negative Syndrome Scale–Excitement Component (PANSS-EC), remains uncertain. This study examined the association between antipsychotic therapy, hospital stay duration, and PANSS-EC scores in patients with schizophrenia. A retrospective, cross-sectional analysis was conducted on 271 patients. Sociodemographic data were analyzed descriptively, and the Kruskal–Wallis test was applied for bivariate analysis across treatment groups. The results showed that patients were predominantly male (72.7%), most frequently diagnosed with paranoid-type schizophrenia (42.8%), and commonly aged 26–35 years (33.9%). No significant differences were found in hospital stay or PANSS-EC scores among the antipsychotic treatment groups. However, gender was significantly associated with PANSS-EC score changes, and schizophrenia subtype correlated with hospital stay duration. Antipsychotic therapy demonstrated no direct association with hospital stay or PANSS-EC outcomes. Instead, demographic and clinical factors, particularly gender and schizophrenia subtype, influenced treatment outcomes. These findings underscore the need for further investigation into patient-specific variables to optimize therapeutic strategies in schizophrenia care.

Abstract

This study aims to investigate the impact of integrating Outcome-Based Education (OBE)-oriented digital assessments on students’ self-regulated learning (SRL) in General Chemistry courses. A quasi-experimental design was employed involving 50 undergraduate students who participated in four sessions of formative assessments delivered through digital platforms such as Quizizz and Google Forms. Each assessment item was carefully aligned with specific learning outcomes and designed to support five SRL dimensions: goal setting, time management, self-monitoring, help-seeking, and self-evaluation. Data were collected using pre- and post-intervention questionnaires and tests, and subsequently analyzed through paired sample t-tests. The results revealed a statistically significant improvement in overall SRL scores (from 64.52 to 77.84, p < 0.001), with the most notable increases observed in self-monitoring and help-seeking. These findings indicate that embedding digital formative assessments within an OBE framework can foster learners’ autonomy, metacognitive engagement, and reflective learning strategies. The study underscores the pedagogical value of aligning assessment with learning outcomes while leveraging feedback-driven digital tools to create meaningful and sustainable learning experiences in higher education, particularly in science-related disciplines

Abstract

Low understanding of subject matter, particularly in chemistry—especially in aspects of chemical literacy such as conceptual knowledge, contextual understanding, and higher-order thinking skills (HOTS)—combined with students’ limited problem-solving skills, has resulted in poor learning outcomes at SMA Negeri 16 Batam. Another contributing factor is the limited use of instructional media that supports real-life skill development. This study aimed to determine the effectiveness of chemistry literacy-based learning videos in improving the problem-solving abilities of Grade X students. The research employed a quasi-experimental method with a nonequivalent control group design. The sample consisted of two purposively selected classes: an experimental group taught using chemistry literacy-based videos and a control group using PowerPoint media. Research instruments included a chemical literacy test and a problem-solving skills test. Data were analyzed using an independent t-test to compare group results and an N-Gain test to evaluate treatment effectiveness. Findings revealed that the use of chemistry literacy-based videos significantly enhanced students’ chemical literacy, problem-solving skills, and overall learning outcomes compared to the control group. The N-Gain value of 73% categorized the intervention as moderately effective. Thus, chemistry literacy-based videos are effective instructional media for improving the quality of chemistry learning at the senior high school level.

Abstract

This study aims to investigate students’ learning obstacles in understanding Green Chemistry within the context of a soap-making activity. As sustainability becomes an increasingly important issue in science education, it is essential to understand how students engage with environmentally oriented chemistry concepts. This study employs qualitative case study approach. The participants consisted of five grade XI students (second-year high school), comprising two boys and three girls. The interviews were conducted at a private school in Bandung. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews with five main questions. The responses were analyzed using thematic analysis to identify key themes related to students’ learning challenges in understanding green chemistry, which were categorized into five main themes. The findings reveal that students face significant challenges in understanding Green Chemistry, particularly due to abstract concepts, limited classroom engagement, and teacher-centered instruction. Moreover, students often struggle to connect the theoretical principles of Green Chemistry with real-life applications, such as waste reduction or the use of renewable materials in everyday chemical processes. These findings highlight the importance of designing more interactive, context-based, and student-centered learning strategies. It is expected that the results of this study can serve as a foundation for developing instructional designs that better support students’ understanding of sustainability-oriented chemistry.
