Abstract

Abstract. This Hallidayan-based study aimed to investigate the representation of consumptive and productive behaviours in English textbooks for senior high school students. To obtain the purpose of this study, two grade-12 English textbooks used nationally in Indonesia were purposively selected. Then reading texts about finance issues were analysed by employing the Hallidayan SFL framework of material clause. Based on the analysis, it was found that the dominant material clauses (40%) in the books construe productive behaviours while the second frequent ones (32%) represent consumptive behaviours. However, there is the tendency to represent money as a goal. The findings of this study are expected to contribute to developing finance literacy in English textbook materials for Indonesian senior-high-school students. While the portrayal of productive behaviours in textbooks is salient for the development of their finance literacy, there is also a need to avoid building money-oriented paradigmKeywords: Productive, consumptive, behaviours, textbook, SFL

Abstract

Abstract. Understanding educational philosophy is very important because it will influence the quality of education. Educational philosophy affects the teacher's decision to determine the educational purpose embedded in the curriculum and instruction. Hence, investigating the educational philosophy of the pre-service English teacher is essential because this is when the journey begins to become an English teacher. This research aimed to explore pre-service English teachers' educational philosophies and predict the consequences of their dominant educational philosophies. The data were collected from 78  pre-service teachers in the English education department at one of the state universities in Central Java. The finding showed that pre-service English teachers have a mixture of several educational philosophies, of which humanism was the dominant educational philosophy. Institution, culture, and policy influence pre-service English teachers' educational philosophy. In humanism, the teacher believes that teaching and learning processes have to give freedom to the students to develop their values. These findings provide valuable insight for education policymakers to support the development of suitable education.  Keywords: curriculum, educational philosophy, pre-service English teacher, humanism

Abstract

Abstract. Translating literary works into various languages is a common practice to expand wider audience. In literary works, violence often serves as an instigating element that might unsettle readers, making it a critical challenge for translators to convey while maintaining the nuances of the original text. The novel Laut Bercerita by Leila S. Chudori is one such literary work that best illustrates narrative violence. It depicts the struggle of activists against the authoritarian government during the New Order era. Investigating how narrative violence is re-expressed is essential, as certain forms of violence may not be acceptable in the target language, which highlights the importance of understanding to what extent a translator faithfully transfers such content from the source language to the target one. This study accordingly examines the types of narrative violence based on Slavoj Žižek theory of violence and digs into the translation strategies used by the translator in transferring the narrative violence using Almjirab’s concept of translation strategies. The research then identifies the translator’s ideology in revoicing narrative violence through Venuti’s concepts of foreignization and domestication. Employing a qualitative descriptive approach, the researcher conducts an in-depth analysis to reveal the proposed problems. The findings unveil three types of violence: subjective violence (84%), systemic violence (14%), and symbolic violence (2%). Moreover, four translation strategies were found: substitution (63%), censorship or omission (20%), taboo for taboo (11%), and euphemism (6%). The study concludes that the translator predominantly employed a domestication ideology, adopting a target language-oriented approach to ensure readability, linguistic acceptance, and emotional resonance. These findings show that domestication enhance the text’s accessibility for the target audience while potentially diminishing the source text’s linguistic and cultural elements.  Keywords: translation studies; translation strategies; ideology of translation; taboo words; narrative violence

Abstract

Abstract. This study explore of Marginalization as a Site of Resistance in Akiyoshi Rikako’s works, particularly 暗黒女子(Ankoku Joshi), 聖母(Seibo), and絶対正義(Zettai Seigi). These novels depict marginalized women in a patriarchal societies who leverage their positions to resist the patriarchy structures. This study employs a qualitative approach, integrating Norman Fairclough’s Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) and bell hooks’ feminist theory. The findings reveal three primary forms of resistance: (1) resistance to gender discrimination; (2) resistance to gender based violence; and (3) resistance against the double burden. Akiyoshi Rikako’s works illustrate how female marginalization can function both as a mechanism of patriarchal structures and as catalyst for empowerment, allowing women to harness their subversive potential. By framing marginalization as a transformative space, this study contributes to broader discussions on gender justice and dismantling of patriarchal systems. The social implications suggest that recognizing marginalization as a site of resistance can inspire real-world activism, empowering marginalized groups, particularly women, to turn their social positions into sources of strength and agency. This study underscores how marginalization can create spaces for resistance and dismantling patriarchal structures that control women’s lives. Keywords: Akiyoshi Rikako, Marginalization, Resistance, Subversive Power, bell hooks

Abstract

Abstract. This study aims to analyze the Indonesian language teaching program for foreign speakers organized by the BIPA institution and how cultural integration in language learning enhances students' comprehension and language skills. This study seeks to answer two main questions: (1) What is the structure and implementation of the Indonesian language teaching program in BIPA institutions? (2) How does cultural integration in BIPA learning affect students' language acquisition? This study employed a qualitative approach, utilizing semi-structured interview and documentation as data collection methods. The collected data were analyzed through thematic analysis techniques involving coding, categorization, and interpretation of emerging patterns from interview responses and studied documents. The results show that BIPA programs can be categorized into two main types: (1) Indonesian for Academic Purposes (BIPATA) which focuses on linguistic aspects and their use in academic settings, and (2) Indonesian for Cultural Purposes, which emphasizes hands-on experience in a cultural context. Academic-based programs are conducted through classroom learning with a theoretical approach and language practice in a formal environment. Meanwhile, culture-based programs include activities outside the classroom, such as cultural camps, visits to historical sites and tourist attractions, jumparingan (traditional archery), and cultural workshops. Further analysis reveals that cultural integration in learning not only enriches participants learning experiences but also accelerates language acquisition through direct interaction with Indonesian society and cultural environment. Thus, this study highlights the significance of a culture-based approach in Indonesian language teaching for foreign speakers to enhance their communicative skills and contextual understanding of the language.  Keywords: BIPA, culture, program, foreign learners

Abstract

Abstract. This study aims to identify Sophie's narcissistic behavior and to analyze its effects on her personality in Soman Chainani’s The School for Good and Evil (2013). This research applies Sigmund Freud’s psychoanalysis theory and Campbell & Crist’s narcissism theory to analyze the character's narcissistic behavior and its effects. This research used the qualitative method. The primary data source is Soman Chainani’s The School for Good and Evil published in 2013 by HarperCollins. In collecting the data, the writers read the novel, take notes on the important details, organize the data, and analyze the data that has been sorted using Sigmund Freud's psychoanalysis theory and Campbell & Crist's narcissism theory. The results of this study reveal that there are 24 data related to Sophie’s imbalanced personality and another 24 data about the effects of her narcissistic behavior. As shown in the data, Sophie is dominated by her id, which leads her to have narcissistic traits such as self-importance, antagonism, and a sense of entitlement. The effects of her narcissism are overconfidence, grandiosity, infidelity, aggression, mistrust, and emotional fragility. Sophie’s narcissism not only damages her relationship but also hinders her emotional and mental development. This study enables the readers to gain a deeper understanding of human psychology and how narcissism manifests and affects human behavior as seen through a literary text. Moreover, through this study, the readers can also see the close relation between the study of literature and psychology since both delve into the psychological problems experienced by human beingsKeywords: Psychoanalysis, Imbalanced Personality, Narcissism, The School for Good and Evil

Abstract

The difficulty of understanding verb and noun reduplication in Indonesian and English without the aid of Natural Language Processing (NLP) technology. The urgency of this research lies in the gap in computational approaches that are not yet adaptive to morphological and semantic differences between languages. The aim of this research is to analyse the role of NLP technology in identifying reduplication patterns and their implications for language learning. The research approach used a mixed methods approach. The sample size was 300 respondents. Data were collected through questionnaires, semi-structured interviews, and analysis of a bilingual Indonesian-English corpus. Analysis techniques used were descriptive statistics and ANOVA assisted by SPSS 29.0, thematic analysis, and evaluation of a BERT-based NLP model. The results show that NLP is able to recognize cross-language reduplication variations with a high level of reliability. Students demonstrated a good understanding of the form and function of reduplication and a positive attitude towards the use of NLP technology. The conclusion is that NLP is effective in capturing the semantic nuances of reduplication. Practical implications: these results support the development of bilingual curricula, digital learning media, and contextual NLP-based language analysis applications.

Abstract

Abstract. This study investigates how the application of Japanese linguistic knowledge can enhance Indonesian learners’ understanding of Japanese adnominal clauses with animate head nouns. Previous experiments revealed that learners had difficulty interpreting semantic roles due to differences between Japanese and Indonesian in case particle usage and clause structure. To address this issue, a two-step method was introduced: identifying the adnominal clause and converting the head noun back into a clause to clarify its semantic role. In this experiment, 20 Indonesian learners at the N3 level were divided into two groups: an experimental group, which received explicit instruction on the method, and a control group, which did not. Results from pre- and post-class tests showed that the experimental group significantly improved in interpreting adnominal clauses. A one-tailed paired t-test confirmed that the improvement was statistically significant. These findings suggest that explicit attention to case particles and clause structures—supported by linguistic knowledge—can help learners accurately comprehend complex sentences. Moreover, knowledge of case particles may serve as a self-monitoring tool for understanding Japanese adnominal clauses. This research highlights the importance of integrating linguistic theory into Japanese language education to address specific learner challengesKeywords: Applied linguistics, focus on form, Japanese language education, adnominal clauses, case particles

Abstract

Abstract. This research investigates the material needs of third-year students enrolled in two classes of Translation courses at Universitas Palangka Raya, aiming to inform the development of a comprehensive translation module. A total of 108 students participated in the study, providing valuable insights through a structured questionnaire designed to assess their specific requirements for translation materials. A qualitative approach using structured questionnaires was used, allowing for both thematic analysis of open-ended responses and percentage-based summaries of closed-ended items. This enabled an in-depth understanding of the students’ perspectives and learning needs. The findings revealed that the majority of students felt the current materials were adequate, but highlighted the need for a more structured and accessible module. Specifically, students expressed a desire for materials that bridge the gap between theory and practice, including more examples, practical exercises, and structured guidance across different types of texts, such as academic, commercial, and literary works. The results underscore the importance of developing a tailored translation module that not only covers the theoretical aspects of translation but also provides ample opportunities for students to apply their knowledge in practice. This study provides a foundational basis for enhancing the Translation courses at Universitas Palangka Raya, ensuring that the curriculum aligns more closely with the actual needs of students. Keywords: : translation, module, learning materials, EFL students, need analysis
