Abstract

This study examines the Chinese language textbook Easy Steps to Chinese 1, which is used at SMP Kristen Shining Star Sragen. The focus is on evaluating the material in this textbook for its overall quality and effectiveness in supporting language learning. It aims to assess its suitability for junior high school learners, based on curriculum alignment and learner needs. A descriptive qualitative approach was used, including field observations, focus group discussions, and a review of relevant books, journals, and literature. In teaching Chinese, educators must be supported by textbooks that align with learners’ proficiency levels and learning objectives. Effective textbooks should incorporate relevant cultural and contextual elements to enhance both comprehension and practical language use. The results of this study led to the development of a compiled textbook, adapted from the original and aligned with the Kurikulum Merdeka and the school's vision and mission. This adapted textbook is intended to serve as a guide and reference for teachers in the Chinese language teaching and learning process at SMP Kristen Shining Star Sragen

Abstract

Abstract. Snooker commentary, though often overlooked in linguistic research, presents a rich site for exploring how specialized vocabulary functions in live sporting contexts. In the broader field of sports linguistics, most register studies have concentrated on outdoor sports or E-sports, leaving cue sports like snooker relatively underexplored. This study aims to investigate the linguistic register of snooker commentary by identifying specialized vocabulary and analyzing morphological patterns in two professional finals. Adopting a descriptive qualitative design, data were collected through non-participant observation and note-taking from live broadcasts, comprising 9,146 words of commentary and 525 register-specific terms, which were analyzed using Holmes’ theory of register and McCarthy’s morphological framework with focus on affixation and compounding. The analysis identified 69 unique register terms (e.g., frame-winning visits, potter, baulk color ball), showing that commentators used specialized vocabulary selectively to balance precision and accessibility. Morphological processes such as affixation (potter, doubler) and compounding (long pot, frame-winning visits) were central to constructing efficient, context-sensitive expressions. These findings indicate that register in snooker commentary functions both as a tool for technical description and as a strategy for audience engagement, contributing to broader discussions in sports linguistics and media studies about how specialized registers adapt to diverse audiences in global sporting broadcasts. Keywords: Affixation and Compounding, Morphological Analysis, Register, Snooker Commentary, Sports Linguistics.

Abstract

Abstract. Lullabies play an important role in transmitting cultural values and intergenerational affection. Its essence and practice are realized through ethnoparenting. However, this research is still relatively understudied, especially because it uses comparative analysis. Thru a comparison of the songs "Tak Léla Léla Lédhung" (Javanese) and "Jajang-jajang Uri Aga" (Korean), this study highlights how the values of love, discipline, and spirituality in traditional oral heritage play a role in shaping modern cross-cultural parenting. The main objective is to explore the implications of both lullabies within the context of the ethnoparenting parenting style. The analysis was conducted using a descriptive qualitative method with Peirce's triadic semiotic approach. This approach allowed the researcher to cohesively integrate linguistic, cultural, and psychological perspectives. The analysis results show how both lullabies contain moral values, strengthen emotional bonds, and serve as a medium for cultural transmission. Overall, this research not only contributes to the preservation of oral traditions but also offers a conceptual framework for applying ethnoparenting in the context of modern cross-cultural parenting. This study opens up opportunities for parents to adapt the ethno-parenting values contained in traditional oral heritage into modern parenting practices. Furthermore, this research can be developed to examine the application of ethnoparenting practices in daily life.

Abstract

Abstract. In contemporary Indonesian literature, trauma analysis typically employs psychoanalytic or cognitive psychology. The application of Skinner's behaviorism theory to understand the mechanism of trauma in main characters in literature is still quite controversial. However, it can offer different perspectives on how the main character can develop a strategy for coping with trauma. This study analyzes the traumatizing references made by the main character, Magi Diela Tolo, in Perempuan Yang Menangis Kepada Bulan Hitam by Dian Purnomo. The three main areas of focus for the study are factors that cause trauma, forms of trauma that arise, and the methods used by the main character to recover from the experienced trauma. This research employs a descriptive qualitative method with an isi analysis technique. Data collection is conducted by examining the text and analyzing it using the concepts of reinforcement and stimulus-response from behaviorism theory, B.F. Skinner, and then analyzing the results based on the study's findings. According to the study's findings, the three main factors that contribute to Magi trauma are beliefs in Yappa Mawine customs, peer pressure, and persistent discrimination from the general public. This trauma manifests as psychological symptoms like depression and anxiety, as well as physical symptoms like physical ailments. Magi outlines three strategies for coping with this trauma: treating the person as an internal source of strength, reflecting on oneself using positive thinking, and working to improve the environment to aid in the healing process. This study contributes to the field of literary psychology by offering behaviorism as an alternative to trauma analysis in Indonesian novels. It is hoped that all of the information regarding this strengthening mechanism will give rise to fresh ideas about behavioral therapy for trauma, particularly regarding gender-based and traditional victim violence. In addition, this study adds to our understanding of how women's characters in Indonesian culture illustrate resilience in the face of societal traumaKeywords: Trauma, Behaviorism, Reinforcement, Women, Dian Purnomo's Novel

Abstract

Abstract. This study investigates the use of the Hör-Sehen strategy in improving students' ability to understand texts in the Receptive course of the German language. This strategy combines what is heard and what is seen (e.g. an audio-visual technique), making it easier for students to understand the content of the text. This research used a mixed methods research design, combining descriptive quantitative and qualitative methods of a Concurrent embedded research model. The data collection techniques used in this study consisted of observation, pre-test implementation, experiment implementation, post-test implementation, questionnaire distribution, and student response questionnaire. Respondents in this study amounted to 30 students of the German language education study program who were at the beginner level. The results show that applying the Hör-Sehen strategy has a statistically significant positive influence on the ability to understand German texts in beginning learners in the Receptive course. The results of the interviews and questionnaires show that using this strategy can focus students' thinking and make them interested and motivated to take part in the learning process. The other results show that the students understand the information contained in the texts, can offer an interpretation, and provide reflection and assessment of a text through exercises and assignments, which are structured according to the steps in this strategy and form an initial understanding of difficult vocabulary in the textKeywords: Language Ability, Text Understanding, Beginning Language Learners, German, Hör-Sehen Strategy

Abstract

This research explored the semantic range of verb-to-noun conversion in English, centering on how this process, known as nominalization, enhances lexicon and underpins linguistic theory, language education, and computational applications by analyzing 205 verbs and their nominalized shapes extricated from the online Oxford English Dictionary (OED) and online Merriam-Webster Dictionary. The investigation revealed patterns and frequencies of nominalization, categorizing things into semantic types, such as the event, result, agentive, instrumental, locative, and state. The findings revealed that transitive verbs showed the foremost broad semantic extent in nominalization. The semantic range of verb data is 2127 data or 31% per cent which is divided into transitive verb and intransitive verb. The number of semantic ranges in transitive verbs is 1377 data or 20% per cent and the number of semantic ranges in intransitive verbs is 750 data or 11% per cent. While the number of semantic ranges on conversion nouns is 880 data or 13% per cent. A mismatch or unmatched number produced on the semantic range of verb-to-noun was 1268 data or 19% per cent. The implication of this research is to know English learners' awareness of noun-to-verb conversion and ease of communication in daily activities.

Abstract

Abstract. This research aims to understand how authority influences the transformation of a person's character from good to evil, analyzing the impact of social and cultural environments on individual behavior. Using Roland Barthes' semiological theory, this study explores the relationship between signs produced by authority (signifier) and meanings internalized by individuals (signified). Through descriptive qualitative analysis, the research interprets signs based on their literal meanings to identify signifiers and signifieds in character transformation. The findings reveal that external factors such as power dynamics and social status significantly influence Coriolanus Snow's character transformation. The semiotic analysis demonstrates how living conditions create emotional impacts that affect moral development. Furthermore, the symbolism present in the novel illustrates how hope diminishes when confronted with oppressive authority. The findings have broader implications for understanding how power structures systematically influence individual identity formation and moral decision-making processes across various social contexts, contributing to the field of character studies and critical discourse analysisKeywords: Language, Authority, Sign, Morality, Power

Abstract

Abstract. This study aims to develop and empirically validate a functional literacy competency measurement tool specifically for junior high school students. This instrument can be used by educators and stakeholders to explore and in advanced improve student’s functional literacy skills. The research approach used is the Research & Development (R & D) model. The draft functional literacy competency measurement tool has been validated by teachers, experts and practitioners. This instrument has been discussed in FGDs with teachers from 5 (five) junior high schools in Yogyakarta, The FGD resulted in an agreement on the types of functional literacy consisting of 15 types, namely: literary, digital, document, numerical, environmental, health, tourism, transportation, road safety, language politeness, disaster mitigation, financial, cultural, visual, and social literacy. Product testing was needed as further product development to achieve empirical validity. The number of items was 60 items. The product trial in DIY involved a total of 246 students in grades VII and VIII. The results of the trial analysis with the QUEST program resulted in a probability value at the 0.50 level with an item-based reliability index of 0.98. Mean INFIT MNSQ showed a result of 1.00 with SD. 04, which means the item fits the Rasch model. Items that qualified for the appropriate threshold range (± 2) were 51 items or 85%. The items that were outside the ±2 range were 9 items, meaning that the eliminated items were 15%. Students' functional literacy skills in general mostly did not meet the minimum requirement of 75. Students who scored ≥ 75 were 94 students (38.2%). Meanwhile, 61.8% of students did not meet the standardKeywords: instrument, literacy, functional literacy
