Abstract

The conventional, text-based literary learning model that does not utilize digital technology has an impact on students' lack of ability to understand the meaning of poetry. It is urgent to analyse technology-based learning innovations that can improve student understanding, motivation, and engagement. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to evaluate the effectiveness of HyperWrite Technology as a teaching aid in improving students' ability to understand the meaning of poetry in Indonesian language learning. The research approach uses a mixed method sequential explanation design. The number of respondents in this study was 170 students, with a sampling technique using purposive sampling. Data collection techniques in this study used pre-test and post-test, observation interviews, and documentation. Data analysis techniques used statistics for paired sample t-tests, effect sizes, correlations, and regressions, while qualitative data were analysed thematically. The results of the study showed a significant increase in poetry comprehension ability, with an average of 59.40 (pre-test) to 82.15 (post-test), t value = 18.462, p < 0.05 and an effect size of 0.81. These findings indicate that HyperWrite's automatic feature analysis provides a dominant contribution in improving students' understanding of the meaning of poetry. In conclusion, HyperWrite technology is effective in enhancing literary understanding, particularly in interpreting poetry interactively and constructively in the future. The global implication is that HyperWrite-based literature learning makes it easier for students to interpret the meaning of poetry

Abstract

This study analyzes the impact of foreign tutor-based English language learning on improving students' interest in learning at Pondok Pesantren Al-Munawwiri Sempu Islamic. The purpose of this study is to examine the role of foreign tutors in shaping, fostering, and maintaining students' interest in learning in the context of Islamic Pesantren education, which has distinctive social, cultural, and religious characteristics. This study uses a qualitative approach with a descriptive case study design. Research data were collected through learning observations, semi-structured interviews with five students, two teachers, the advisor, and foreign tutors, and supported by an analysis of relevant learning documents. The data were analyzed thematically to identify patterns and dynamics in the development of students' interest in learning. The results show that foreign-tutor-based English learning has a significant impact on the continuous improvement of students' interest in learning. Learning interest develops from a situational response to a more stable interest, reflected in increased curiosity, courage to ask questions, active participation, and students' confidence in using English. The implications of this research show that foreign tutors can be effective triggers if supported by pedagogical approaches that are in line with Pesantren culture

Abstract

Digital literacy has emerged as a crucial skill for teachers to acquire in order to adapt to the enormous digital learning resources available online. This study aims to explore English teachers’ digital literacy knowledge and practices, particularly their adaptation of digital learning resources for classroom use. This study employed a qualitative content analysis design guided by the European Framework for the Digital Competence of Educators(DigCompEdu). The study focuses on three areas: digital resources, teaching and learning, and empowering learners, to map teachers’ competence against their classroom practices. Data were collected from 12 digital learning resources created by three junior high school English teachers, supported by DigCompEdu-derived questionnaires and semi-structured interviews. Although the sample is small, the study adopts an in-depth case-oriented approach to generate rich, contextualized insights into the relationship between perceived and enacted digital competence. The findings reveal a significant disparity between teachers’ self-assessed competence levels (B1–C1) and the pedagogical depth of their resource adaptation. While teachers frequently use multimodal resources and demonstrate functional digital skills, critical evaluation of sources, systematic citation practices, learner-centered adaptation, and integration of problem-solving remain limited. This gap highlights a conceptual distinction between operational digital proficiency and profound digital literacy in pedagogical contexts. The novelty of this study lies in its empirical evidence of competence-practice misalignment, based on a triangulated analysis of self-assessment data and real instructional artifacts within the DigCompEdu framework. The findings contribute to global discussions on teachers' digital literacy by emphasizing the need to move beyond skill acquisition toward reflective, evaluative, and pedagogically grounded digital integration in language education

Abstract

This study reports on the investigation of problems and causes of lack of Japanese language knowledge and skills of Indonesian intern trainees, as also highlighted in some previous studies, such as by Kamiya (2017), Wu (2020), and Pranasari and Iskandar (2022). Involving 262 Japanese language teachers at 177 vocational education and training centers spread all over Indonesia as the participants, this qualitative study collects the data via Google Form, investigating three key areas, involving teacher, teaching process, and students that are potentially contributing to the problems and causes that result in the lack of Japanese language knowledge and skills of Indonesian intern trainees. The results show that the first and foremost problem that contributes to the lack of Japanese language knowledge and skills of Indonesian intern trainees is the teacher. The main cause is their low education background; apart from not meeting the standards set by the Indonesian government as enacted in the Legislation of the National Education System Number 20 Year 2003 Article 39 Line 2 and the Government Rule Number 19 Year 2005, they have low competencies, particularly in pedagogy and professionalism. Their limited pedagogy and professional literacies, skills, and experiences have contributed to the poor performance of the teaching and learning process and the lack of students’ knowledge and skills in Japanese language education.

Abstract

The lexeme qadha is one of the most frequent lexical items in the Qur’an, appearing 63 times in various morphological forms derived from the root q-d-y and exhibiting semantic variations across contexts. This study aims to identify its contextual meanings and examine how linguistic and situational contexts influence its interpretation in the Qur’anic text. This research employs a qualitative descriptive design using a contextual semantic approach. The data consist of all Qur’anic verses containing forms of qadha, analyzed using a semantic framework based on linguistic context (siyāq al-lughawī) and situational context (siyāq al-mawqif). The findings show that the basic meaning of qadha as a decree develops into several contextual meanings, including judgment, completion, creation, destruction, command, and death, depending on the context. These results confirm that lexical meaning is systematically shaped by context and highlight the broader relevance of contextual semantic analysis for linguistic and semantic studies of religious and classical texts

Abstract

Critical reading competence and reading self-efficacy are essential cognitive and affective components in foreign language learning, particularly in Arabic language education, where students must interpret complex linguistic, historical, and ethical texts. However, traditional reading instruction often emphasizes literal comprehension rather than analytical engagement, resulting in limited development of higher-order reading skills and learner confidence. This study investigates the effectiveness of problem-based critical Arabic reading instruction integrating Nabawi peace values in improving students’ critical reading achievement and reading self-efficacy. Employing a quasi-experimental one-group pretest–posttest design, the study involved 21 undergraduate students enrolled in a Critical Arabic Reading course at a public university in Indonesia. The instructional intervention was conducted using authentic Arabic texts related to the Prophet Muhammad’s peace agreements, implemented through Problem-Based Learning stages including problem orientation, critical analysis, collaborative discussion, and reflective evaluation. Data were collected using a critical reading achievement test and a reading self-efficacy questionnaire validated through item-total correlation and reliability analysis (Cronbach’s alpha = .943–.948). Paired-sample t-test results revealed a statistically significant improvement in students’ critical reading achievement (Mpre = 76.86, Mpost = 87.90, t(20) = −4.518, p < .001, Cohen’s d = 0.99) and reading self-efficacy (Mpre = 70.86, Mpost = 81.52, t(20) = −7.522, p < .001, Cohen’s d = 1.64). These findings indicate that problem-based critical Arabic reading integrating Nabawi peace values has a strong positive effect on both cognitive and affective learning outcomes. The integration of problem-based learning and peace-oriented instructional materials promotes analytical reading competence, enhances learner confidence, and fosters meaningful engagement with texts. This study contributes to Arabic language pedagogy by providing empirical evidence supporting a holistic instructional model integrating cognitive skill development, affective empowerment, and value-based learning.

Abstract

Teacher burnout is the most persistent challenge in education. With this in mind,  this study examines the burnout experiences of four Indonesian high school English teachers. The study employed the Context-Action-Result-Learning (CARL) framework developed at the University of Edinburgh and the teacher burnout framework proposed by Sabnani, Dinh, and Siregar (2025). Data collection began by obtaining information about teachers' burnout experiences and coping strategies through a written CARL survey. This was followed by an individual interview with each teacher to gather more information about their burnout experiences. The research findings show that the participants’ burnout contexts varied, ranging from administrative workloads, school-based exam pressures, to pandemic-era challenges, and adaptation. Common patterns emerged in their coping strategies, particularly in leveraging social support, self-care, and professional reflection. The findings reinforce the adaptability of the CARL model while suggesting extensions to include financial and structural stressors in the Context phase and contextual professional learning under the Learning phase. Although the result of the research offers a new perspective on burnout sources and management, this study is limited in its scope and participants. Future research should involve more participants across more varied educational contexts to gain a more comprehensive understanding of teachers’ burnout

Abstract

This study investigates students’ challenges in implementing metacognitive strategies in reading authentic German texts at Universitas Negeri Makassar. Employing a qualitative descriptive-exploratory design, the study involved 28 B1-level students from the German Language Education Study Program. Data were collected through open-ended questionnaires and Focus Group Discussions (FGDs) and analyzed using thematic analysis to identify recurring patterns in students’ experiences. The results indicate that students tend to employ metacognitive strategies: planning, monitoring, and evaluation, intuitively rather than consciously and systematically. Four major challenges were identified: inconsistent use of planning strategies, difficulties in activating prior knowledge, limited vocabulary (Wortschatz), and difficulties in regulating metacognitive strategies. These findings reveal a gap between theoretical expectations of metacognitive strategy use and actual learner practices, particularly when dealing with authentic texts that require higher cognitive processing. These findings suggest that metacognitive strategies need to be taught explicitly and reinforced continuously to foster students’ metacognitive awareness and improve their comprehension of authentic German texts. Practically, the findings highlight the need for a more systematic integration of explicit metacognitive instruction in reading classes, including structured pre-, while-, and post-reading activities, guided reflection, and targeted support for vocabulary development and activation of prior knowledge, in order to help students manage authentic texts more effectively

Abstract

The growing recognition of translation as a multidimensional practice highlights the need for systematic mapping within translation studies. This study aims to map research orientations and methodological trends in SINTA 1–Scopus-indexed journals from 2020 to 2025, providing an empirical basis for situating Indonesia within the global development of translation studies. This study employed qualitative document analysis based on Holmes’s framework. It followed a PRISMA-guided scoping review process, identifying eight journals and screening 35 potentially relevant articles according to predefined criteria. After the eligibility assessment, 27 articles were retained for final analysis. A longitudinal analysis was conducted to reveal patterns and developments over time. The findings indicate a continued dominance of product-oriented research and qualitative approaches in Indonesian SINTA 1–Scopus-indexed translation studies articles, with limited use of quantitative and mixed methods. These results suggest that national research and publication trends remain largely concentrated on established textual analysis traditions and have not yet fully reflected the broader methodological and theoretical diversification observed at the global level. This study contributes both empirically and methodologically by mapping research orientations and methodological trends in Indonesian translation studies. It further highlights the gap between national practices and global developments, thereby contributing to a more nuanced understanding of uneven disciplinary development across contexts. These findings imply the need to expand methodological and analytical approaches, including corpus-based, process-oriented, and interdisciplinary research. They also underscore the importance of strengthening connections between research, academic publishing practices, and curriculum development, particularly through greater engagement with translation technology, professional practice, and competence-based education

Abstract

This study investigates the comparative performance of human and machine translations in Asia-Pacific news reporting, focusing on faithfulness, fluency, and cultural appropriateness. Although Neural Machine Translation (NMT) systems, particularly Google Translate and ChatGPT, have advanced significantly in fluency, concerns remain regarding their ability to preserve semantic accuracy and convey culturally embedded expressions. ChatGPT, with its transformer-based architecture and self-attention mechanisms, shows progress in resolving inter-sentential dependencies and producing coherent outputs. Nonetheless, the findings reveal that human translators consistently outperform machine systems in maintaining message fidelity, adapting cultural nuances, and preserving journalistic tone. A qualitative comparison of 12 English to Indonesia news texts translated into Bahasa Indonesia highlights key divergences in handling ideological framing and sociolinguistic specificity. These results emphasize the continued importance of human oversight in high-stakes domains such as journalism. While AI-driven systems provide promising fluency, they require contextual and cultural calibration to achieve faithful and responsible translation in global media flows. This study also has implications fro the newsrooms adopting AI in multilingual reporting, as careful editorial intervention remains necessary to ensure accuracy, cultural sensitivity, and credibility
