Abstract

The representation of Mexican culture becomes one of the main focuses on visual media since many visual media display the Mexican as something bad. In Hollywood films, the depictions of Mexican are usually different from the Mexican perspective. Mexico is a place where awful things happen in the film. Coco film is a film that genuinely gives Mexico a good name. It has shown the beauty of Mexico through its culture. The purpose of this research is to find the representation of Mexican culture in Coco film. In order to get more thorough understanding, the theory of Cultural Representation by Stuart Hall was employed. In this research, the researcher used qualitative research methodology. The results of the research show that there are eighteen representations of Mexican culture in Coco film. Those representations are paple picado, piñata, luchador, tamales, pan dulce, alebrijes, xolo dog, cumbia, mariachi, huaraches, hacienda, Aztec pyramid, churros, marimba, el grito, the dominant religion, Dia de los Muertos, and spanish language.

Abstract

This thesis discussed two problems: analyzing the maxims violated by the main characters in The Age of Adaline movie and the reasons why the main characters violated the maxims in the movie. The researcher chose two main characters who were influential in building the story. This is research was conducted using a qualitative method of content analysis because it focused on understanding the phenomenon of language in depth. In this study, data collection was done by watching and reading dialogues in The Age of Adaline movie This result of this study showed that they were nineteen dialogues containing all types of maxims violated by main characters. In this study, the main characters violated the quantity of maxim more often in conversation because it provides more information than needed. The reasons for violating the maxims were saving face, protecting the answer, avoiding the discussion, pleasing the interlocutors, communicating self-interest and misleading counterparts. It was also revealed that the main characters most frequently violated the maxim to avoid discussion due to their dislike about certain topics such as identity and work which causes misunderstandings between the main characters. The reason the main character often uses was avoiding the discussion because in The Age of Adaline, the main character tried to avoid her true identity to avoid things that will make her identity known to everyone.

Abstract

Lirik lagu memiliki beberapa konsep yang sering digunakan, yaitu menceritakan sesuatu atau membawa kesan pengalaman pengarang. Salah satu kumpulan lagu yang menarik baik dalam hal irama maupun lirik-liriknya adalah kumpulan lagu yang dibawakan oleh Tulus dalam album yang berjudul Monokrom. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mendeskripsikan bentuk makna leksikal dan gramatikal yang terdapat pada lirik lagu dalam Album Monokrom karya Tulus dengan menggunakan kajian semantik. Metode yang digunakan adalah deskriptif kualitatif dengan jenis penelitian kepustakaan. Data yang digunakan dalam penelitian ini berupa, kata, frasa, dan klausa. Sumber data dalam penelitian ini adalah lirik lagu dalam album Monokrom karya Tulus. Teknik pengumpulan data yang digunakan adalah teknik simak bebas libat cakap dan teknik catat. Teknik analisis data menggunakan metode padan intralingual. Hasil dari penelitian ditemukan bentuk makna leksikal yang terdiri dari, repetisi, sinonimi, dan antonimi. Bentuk leksikal yang dominan adalah repetisi. Repetisi yang ditemukan dalam lirik lagu album Monokrom ini umumnya tidak berubah arti atau pemaknaannya tetap sama. Selanjutnya sinonimi yang ditemukan dalam penelitian ini umumnya membentuk verba. Terakhir, antonimi yang ditemukan dalam penelitian ini umumnya membentuk nomina. Sedangkan, bentuk makna gramatikal yang ditemukan dalam lirik album Monokrom karya tulus terdiri dari, afiksasi, reduplikasi, dan komposisi. Bentuk gramatikal yang dominan adalah afiksasi. Afiksasi yang dominan ditemukan umumnya membentuk verba. Selanjutnya bentuk reduplikasi yang ditemukan dalam lirik lagu album Monokrom ini mayoritasnya membentuk pereduplikasian utuh yang dominan memiliki bentuk kata dasar nomina. Terakhir, komposisi yang terdapat dalam penelitian ini dominan berkategori nomina. Secara keseluruhan dari hasil analisis dalam lirik lagu album Monokrom karya Tulus memuat nilai kehidupan yang mencakup delapan nilai, (1) nilai cinta atau kasih sayang; (2) nilai kesetiaan; (3) nilai moral; (4) nilai prestasi; (5) nilai keberanian; (6) nilai kemandirian; (7) nilai kejujuran; (8) nilai kesenangan.

Abstract

Penelitian ini dilakukan dengan tujuan untuk mengetahui respons pembaca perempuan terhadap isi cerita dalam cerpen Perempuan Hajar karya Abidah El Khaleqy. Penelitian ini termasuk penelitian lapangan dengan pendekatan resepsi sastra secara sinkronis yang dianalisis secara kualitatif dengan pemaparan secara deskriptif. Data primer penelitian ini adalah hasil kuesioner dengan responden. Sedangkan data sekunder adalah data pendukung berupa unsur intrinsik cerpen. Adapun sumber utama penelitian ini adalah mahasiswi Universitas Mulawarman. Teknik pengumpulan data yang digunakan, yaitu teknik baca, catat, dan kuesioner. Teknik analisis data yang digunakan, yaitu teknik analisis reseptif. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa responden memberikan tanggapan secara aktif dan pasif. Hal tersebut dipengaruhi oleh minat baca responden, kedekatan pengalaman dan pengetahuan, serta kesamaan zaman. Cerpen Perempuan Hajar karya Abidah El Khaleqy menceritakan kisah perjuangan seorang mahasiswi untuk menyelesaikan kuliahnya tanpa bantuan dana dari orang tua. Cerita tersebut sangat relevan kehidupan nyata dan umum diangkat menjadi karya sastra. Setelah membaca cerpen tersebut, responden dapat menemukan motivasi dan inspirasi untuk terus semangat, pantang menyerah, serta berprasangka baik kepada Allah dalam menggapai keinginan. Oleh karena itu, responden menilai bahwa cerpen ini cukup menarik untuk dibaca meskipun tidak mengandung unsur romantis.

Abstract

This study aims to find women’s language features used by Elsa and Anna in Frozen II movie using Lakoff’s theory. This research used the qualitative method. The data were generated from the movie and movie scripts in the form of utterances and conversations expressed by Elsa and Anna. The researcher generated the data from the movie and movie script in the utterances and conversation. The result of the study showed that there were 35 data that contained women’s language features in the movie. There were nine types of women’s language features found in the movie. The women’s language features were found in the movie are Lexical hedges or filler, tag question, rising intonation, and empty adjective, intensifier, hypercorrect, superpolite, avoidance of strong words, and emphatic stress. In this movie, lexical hedges or fillers are the dominant women’s language features were found in this research.

Abstract

ABSTRACTHappy Gilmore is a movie that tells the story of Gilmore whose ambition was to become a professional hockey player. However, he had to leave it to find money to pay for his grandmother's house. Then, he jumped into golf tournaments because he could raise money quickly. In his struggle, Gilmore must experience a lot of anxiety and he must fight these feelings to achieve his goals. The first purpose of this study is to determine the type of anxiety experienced by Gilmore in the Happy Gilmore movie (1997). Besides, this study also aimed to determine the type of defense mechanism Gilmore used to overcome his anxiety. This study was qualitative research because it focused on analyzing the psychological aspect of a character in a movie. Accordingly, the approach  used here was the psychological approach. In this study, the researcher used Freud's theory about anxiety and defense mechanisms. Based on the results of the study, it was found that Gilmore experienced neurotic anxiety, moral anxiety, and realistic anxiety. To overcome his anxiety, Gilmore used several types of defense mechanisms. These defense mechanisms were sublimation, displacement, projection, rationalization, reaction formation, regression, denial, and compensation. Keyword: Anxiety, Defense Mechanism, Happy Gilmore movie

Abstract

Stereotype is one of the issues which happens in America’s multicultural society up to now. This research investigates two objects. First, the type of stereotype: Black female stereotype and the second is stereotype formation which applied in Toni Morrison’s The Bluest Eye. Qualitative method was used in this research. The theories used to approach this research are taken from Mahassen Mgadmi (2009) and James L. Hilton and William von Hippel (1996). The research revealed that there are two main findings in this research. First, the type of stereotype found in the novel is Black female stereotype which represented by two characters. Second, there are two stages of stereotype formation occurred in the novel: Illusory Correlation and Self-Fulfilling Prophecy. The acts of Self-fulfilling Prophecy are harsh word choice, verbal tones, degree of interpersonal distance, facial expressions, and teaching methods or classroom practices. Hence, it can be assumed that the black female characters in the novel are still defined by their physical appearances which then strengthen the stereotype towards them. In addition, the stereotype that happens is actually formed in their mind, and then it is shown in their actual behaviors.

Abstract

The purpose of the study is to identify the kinds of women empowerment dimension portrayed in the movie through Josey as the main female character. Women empowerment has been an issue of immense discussion and contemplation over the last few decades worldwide. This research discusses about women’s empowerment in North Country movies, and investigates further about Josey Aiems as the main character that showed women power in this movie. In addition, Jo Rowland’s theory is employed as the main theoretical basis to answer the research question. The main data of this research were the dialogues, characters’ characters’ attitudes and beliefs that were related to the research questions in this research. The results of the study are based on the analysis of the research questions about dimension empowerment which is personal, relational and collective to support the empowerment of others in community the dimension makes the power getting stronger than before, and women become able to organize themselves to increase their independent right to make choices.

Abstract

In Victorian era, Capitalism was known as an economic system in which power was dominated by private ownership. The work system applied in Capitalism influenced the life of Victorian era and literary works recorded it. The aim of this research is to identify the idea of capitalist exploitation that exists and to describe how capitalist exploitation is represented through character, characterization, and setting in Oliver Twist novel. This research uses a theory by Mariano Zukerfeld about the types of capitalist exploitation which appear through alienation, reproduction, and attention. This is accomplished through library research and the use of a Historicism approach to identify capitalist exploitation in the Victorian era. The result of this research shows that capitalist exploitation is mostly experienced by Oliver Twist as a representative of the lower class. The researcher can conclude that the lower class character, which emerged from the working class, has been subjected to various forms of capitalist exploitation, such as exploitation through alienation refers to labor power, exploitation through reproduction refers to labor product, and exploitation through attention refers to labor time.

Abstract

Kumpulan cerpen ini mengandung unsur budaya Kalimantan. Hal tersebut menunjukkan bahwa tanda-tanda yang terdapat pada kumpulan cerpen tersebut dapat dianalisis berdasarkan semiotik Charles Sanders Peirce yang berfokus pada tanda ikon, indeks, dan simbol. Tujuan penelitian ini adalah menganalisis tanda-tanda yang terdapat pada kumpulan cerpen Kayu Naga dengan menggunakan metode semiotik Charles Sanders Peirce. Penelitian ini merupakan studi pustaka yang menggunakan pendekatan kualitatif deskriptif. Data penelitian ini berupa kata, frasa, kalimat dan paragraf yang mengandung tanda ikon, indeks, dan simbol. Data diperoleh dengan teknik pengumpulan data yaitu teknik baca, dan teknik catat. Teknik analisis data menggunakan teknik tipologi tanda Peirce yaitu ikon, indeks, dan simbol. Hasil penelitian ini, ditemukan ikon berupa foto Ibu. Tanda indeks yang ditemukan berupa wajah membiru, api menyala, air mata, asap, bekas darah tertumpah, ceceran darah, dan bekas serangan tawon. Tanda simbol yang ditemukan berupa ngati, dan nyepukng. Dapat ditarik kesimpulan bahwa tanda-tanda dalam kumpulan cerpen tersebut mengandung kegiatan dan keseharian masyarakat Dayak. Adapun dalam analisis ini, penulis banyak mendapatkan unsur-unsur semiotik berupa indeks. Indeks adalah tanda yang memiliki hubungan sebab-akibat dengan apa yang diwakilinya. Atau disebut tanda sebagai suatu bukti.
