Abstract

This research deals with prejudice in the Detroit film by Kathryn Bigelow. Prejudice is the negative assessment or hostility toward an individual or group resulting in negative treatment. There are so many negative treatments from the prejudice portrayed in the Detroit film. In this research, the researcher analysed the prejudice aspects through the characterization of the characters experiencing negative treatments in the Detroit film. This research was conducted by using a qualitative research design. The data were generated from the speech, thoughts, effect, action, and looks of the characters portrayed in the film. The researcher revealed that the negative treatments in Detroit are committed by the white people police officers and experienced by the black people citizens. In conclusion, four negative treatments experienced by the characters were anti-locution, discrimination, physical attack, and extermination. Therefore, the researcher concluded that the difference between both races such as their skin tone, or the types of their hair is what generated prejudice in Detroit film.

Abstract

Naskah drama “RT NOL RW NOL” karya Iwan Simatupang berisi tentang perjuangan sekelompok manusia melepas statusnya sebagai tunawisma dan memberi makna dalam hidup masing-masing. Tujuan penelitian ini ialah mengkaji karakteristik dimensional dan eksistensi tokoh dalam naskah drama tersebut. Jenis penelitian ini adalah penelitian kepustakaan dengan menggunakan pendekatan deskriptif kualitatif. Data dan sumber data penelitian ini adalah dialog (hauptext) dan teks samping (nabentext) dalam naskah drama “RT NOL RW NOL” karya Iwan Simatupang. Teknik pengumpulan data menggunakan teknik baca dan tulis. Teknik analisis data menggunakan teori karakteristik dimensional dan teori eksistensialisme Albert Camus. Hasil dari penelitian ini: (1) karakteristik dimensional tokoh terbentuk dari faktor internal dan eksternal. Kedua faktor tersebut dapat dilihat dari dimensi fisiologis dan sosiologis tokoh. Karakteristik dimensional tokoh menunjukkan gambaran jenis tunawisma. Tokoh kakek dan si pincang sebagai tunawisma yang lemah dan bekerja sebagai pengemis. Tokoh Ani, Ina, dan Bopeng sebagai tunawisma yang menghalalkan keburukan sebagai pekerjaan. Tokoh Ati sebagai gambaran seseorang yang akan menjadi tunawisma; (2) eksistensi tokoh dikategorikan menjadi dua: pemenang dan pecundang. Tokoh kakek, si pincang, Ina, Bopeng, dan Ati sebagai pemenang karena berhasil melawan penderitaan masing-masing. Tokoh Ani sebagai pecundang karena melakukan bunuh diri secara filsafat dalam menghadapi penderitaannya. Berdasarkan analisis naskah drama “RT NOL RW NOL” karya Iwan Simatupang, naskah drama tersebut memiliki relevansi dengan kehidupan abad ke-21 ini. Naskah drama “RT NOL RW NOL” karya Iwan Simatupang secara tekstual merupakan naskah drama konvensional sedangkan secara konseptual menggunakan gagasan absurd.

Abstract

Women and men are different in terms of using language. Women’s language proved that women tend to use language differently than men, by the features use this research  focused on women’s language features and the function of those features. It aims to identify women’s language features based on Lakoff’s theory and also to identify the functions of language features that is used by main character in Ocean’s 8 Movie based on Jacobson’s theory. This qualitative research was conducted by applying  observation checklist to help the researcher to find out women’s language features. Data were taken from Ocean’s 8 movie  script in the form of women’s utterances. The result show that six features uttered by Debbie in Ocean’s 8 Movie (2018). They are lexical hedges or filler , tag question, super polite form, empty adjective, intensifier, and avoidance of strong swears words. Lexical hedges or fillers are the most frequent women’s language features used by Debbie in Ocean’s 8 Movie(2018). Then, the  language functions which are served by women’s language of Debbie in Ocean’s 8 Movie (2018) are expressive function and directive function.

Abstract

This study aims to identify the types and the functions of taboo and swear words used by the characters in Ted 2  movie. This study is conducted by using qualitative method and the findings are explained descriptively. Data were generated from the movie script, in the form of utterances, dialogues, and conversations that contain taboo and swear words. The findings revealed that most of taboo words used by the characters belong to religion. This study also find that the types of swear words in this movie are classified into two categories first are strong swear words and second is weak swear words. The strong swear words are verbalized by the characters showed the emotion and exclamation of annoyance. While the weak swear words which showed an exclamation of surprise. The reasons why the characters used swear words are to discredit someone/something, create attention, provoke and create interpersonal identification. Discrediting someone/something becomes the highest rank among four reasons. The characters in the movies often used it because they disagree with others, and the characters use swear words to protest for not complying with their wishes. Hence, learning and becoming more aware of how taboo and swear words are used in the literary work will help us improve our understanding of the linguistics phenomenon happened in the society.

Abstract

This research is aimed to portray the psychological oppression in the The Scandalous Lady W film, which is experienced by Seymour Fleming as the main woman character. This research used a theory of Psychological Oppression by Sanda Lee Bartky. The method that had been used by the researcher was the qualitative method. As the result, this research shows that there are three components of psychological oppression portrayed in the film. First, stereotyping which shows that all women who lived in that era were considered as property to their husband. Second, cultural domination which is shown the domination of men culture in life with their authorities and positions. Lastly, sexual objectification which portrayed by Seymour Fleming as the main woman character in this film was sexually objected by her husband. She was oppressed for having an intimate relationship through twenty-seven men chosen by her husband during their marriage life.

Abstract

Novel Mata di Tanah Melus karya Okky Madasari menarik untuk dijadikan objek penelitian karena novel ini memberikan pengetahuan tambahan dan penggambaran sejarah. Novel tersebut membuat remaja dapat belajar sejarah dan memetik nilai-nilai yang ada. Teori yang digunakan adalah teori resepsi sastra menurut Hans Robert Jauss. Kajian resepsi sastra dalam penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mendeskripsikan hasil analisis respons pembaca melalui unsur intrinsik pada novel Mata di Tanah Melus karya Okky Madasari. Penelitian ini merupakan penelitian lapangan dan menggunakan pendekatan deskriptif kualitatif. Data penelitian ialah interpretasi responden terhadap novel dan sumber data ialah 18 siswa kelas XII Bahasa SMAN 4 Berau. Teknik pengumpulan data merupakan teknik wawancara, teknik catat, teknik rekam, dan transkripsi data tutur menjadi teks. Teknik analisis data menggunakan metode resepsi sinkronis secara eksperimental. Berdasarkan hasil penelitian dan pembahasan maka dapat disimpulkan sebagai berikut. Pertama, respons pembaca terhadap novel Mata di Tanah Melus karya Okky Madasari menunjukkan adanya tanggapan positif dan negatif. Mulai dari tokoh, latar, alur, tema, sudut pandang, dan nilai moral. Perbedaan tanggapan terhadap unsur intrinsik ini dikarenakan pemahaman setiap pembaca memiliki horizon harapan tersendiri dalam merespons cerita novel tersebut. Kedua,  kategori pembaca siswa kelas XII Bahasa SMAN Berau yang sesuai ialah actual reader, yaitu manusia yang benar-benar melaksanakan tindakan pembacaan. Ketiga, novel Mata di Tanah Melus karya Okky Madasari layak untuk dibaca oleh anak dan remaja mulai dari usia operasional formal (11 atau 12 tahun ke atas). Responden beranggapan bahwa novel Mata di Tanah Melus merupakan novel yang bagus dan penuh dengan imajinatif sehingga responden dapat menikmati novel tersebut.

Abstract

Recently, there have been many movies that are made based on novels. Crazy Rich Asian is one of the movies based on a novel because the novel came first, then that was made into the movie. The purposes of this research are to find out the similarities and differences of the intrinsic elements in the movie and the novel and reveal the plot changes. This research used Robert Stanton’s theory to describe the intrinsic elements that cover facts, themes, and literary devices. Meanwhile, the ecranisation theory by Pamusuk Eneste is employed to reveal the plot changes, thus including additions, reductions, and changes of both works. The data sources come from novels and movies, shown by quotes, narration, dialogue, and scenes. The results found in this research between the novel’s plot and movies show twenty-six differences in intrinsic elements of both works. After that, seven additions, five reductions, and six changes or modifications occurred in the story’s plot. In conclusion, this research implies that differences, similarities, and changes can occur when a novel is made into a movie.

Abstract

This research aimed to find out the types of beauty register, the linguistic forms, and the language functions in the five selected beauty vloggers videos on YouTube. The design of this research was a descriptive qualitative. The data concerned were words, compound words, and phrases taken from two different sources: ten videos’ transcripts and ten videos. Data collection was performed through watching the ten beauty vloggers videos, reading the ten videos’ transcripts, and taking notes of the needed data. Data analysis was conducted through data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing. There were three results found in this research. First, the types of register identified in the ten beauty vloggers videos were casual and consultative. Second, the linguistic forms of each beauty register found were categorized into three divisions: (1) words, compound words, and phrases as grammatical unit; (2) noun, verb, and adjective as grammatical category; and (3) object and predicate as grammatical functions. Third, the language functions contained within all the beauty registers found were identified as ideational and textual. As the conclusion, the use of register may differ following to the social setting where the speaker is involved. Keywords: linguistic, register, language function, beauty vlogger

Abstract

This article discussed the representation of Chinese society as portrayed in IP Man 4: The Finale movie. Furthermore, the representation of the Other towards the Chinese character using Macfie's representation theory, while Murphy's characterization theory was used to analyze the struggle waged by the Chinese society. The reasons the researcher chose this movie, because (1) IP Man 4: The Finale movie is one of the movies that have just aired in 2020, (2) no one has analyzed this movie using representation theory, and (3) also until now there are still many cases where there are still superiority and inferiority between East and West that still exist and cannot be solved. In this research, the research design used was qualitative by using a qualitative descriptive analysis approach. This research reveals that the representation of Chinese society in IP Man 4: The Finale movie is aberrant, despotic, inferior, passive, feminine, backward, and inauthentic. The findings show that the struggle of Chinese society was characterized by three significant ways, namely: The past life (the character's past story), the character's speech (conversation and mind), and mannerism (reaction or action). By looking at representation theory, we can understand that the term oriental culture aims to prevent the East from not getting a negative connotation. This term is not a justification for blaming something that inaccurate statement, but rather an effort to keep the Eastern nation honorable and dignified.

Abstract

The purpose of this thesis is to identify the discrimination that happened towards Dido as the main female character in Belle film. The film tells the story about a mulatto woman who receives racial discrimination in society because of her racial background. This thesis uses Gordon Allport’s theory of discrimination in which he explained the types of discrimination are antilocution, avoidance, discrimination, physical attack, and extermination. Qualitative research design was employed in conducting this research. The data are taken from dialogues, conversations, narrations, and screenshots that are related to racial discrimination towards Dido. From the five types of discrimination by Allport, there were only three types of discrimination that were happened towards Dido. They were antilocution, avoidance, and discrimination. Discrimination is the most prominent one in this thesis. Hence, it can be assumed when discrimination escalated, it can lead to an extreme action such as physical attack and extermination that happened towards the slave in the film.
