Abstract

This study explored the pedagogical discourse of experienced Indonesian language teachers (in-service teachers) during the pre-teaching phase, focusing on the communication strategies used when initiating classroom learning activities because initial teacher-student interactions are crucial for shaping engagement and motivation. The qualitative research investigated how teachers designed their communication to create an effective learning environment based on the Learning Activity Framework. The study involved 20 in-service Indonesian language teachers, with data collected through classroom observations. The results revealed that teachers' communication patterns included engaging, focusing, contextualising, modeling, establishing expectations, and goal orientation cycles. Teachers applied two pedagogical communication strategies in each cycle to set learning goals, build interpersonal relationships, and activate students' prior knowledge. These strategies were also used to set expectations, manage classroom rules, and apply interactive questioning to encourage participation. Because teachers play cognitive and emotional roles, their initial communication significantly influences students' readiness and motivation. This study contributes to understanding pedagogical discourse in Indonesian classrooms and emphasises the importance of the pre-teaching phase as a foundation for effective teaching. The findings suggest the need for teacher professional development that emphasises reflective communication to support meaningful student engagement

Abstract

Legal language is characterized by its specialized lexicology, often formed through derivational processes such as affixation, nominalization, and semantic derivation, making legal texts more challenging to understand. This research examined how university students majoring in legal English linguistics recognize, interpret, and manage the complicated nature of legal vocabulary derivations while acquiring legal English. The study employed a mixed-methods approach, using a researched-made questionnaire with forty Likert scale items and semi-structured interviews to examine students' viewpoints regarding the derivational complexity of legal vocabulary. It emphasized critical areas of student challenges, such as differentiating between plain and legal meanings, comprehending nominalized phrases, and managing the cognitive strain associated with these derived concepts. Besides, the study also explored students' strategies to overcome these challenges, such as breaking down words into their root forms, using context clues, and referencing dictionaries. The results highlighted significant gaps in students' ability to fully grasp the nuances of legal derivations, suggesting the need for more targeted pedagogical strategies in legal English instruction. The study concluded with recommendations for improving vocabulary teaching to enhance learners’ comprehension, retention, and application of legal terms, focusing on addressing the derivational complexities that hinder students' understanding of legal texts. The findings would be resourceful greatly to those who are involved in the linguistics field, especially in legal English teaching and learning in an English as a foreign language country.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze themes as elements of teachers’ questioning strategies as a scaffold for learners to understand and construct knowledge and their contribution to presenting knowledge in writing. This study followed a qualitative case research design involving two teachers who differed in their experience profiles in the teaching of hortatory exposition to 11th-grade EFL students in the Indonesian context. The data included teachers' questions and students' texts analyzed by deploying the conception of a Theme system in Systemic Functional Linguistics to identify how themes present a topic, contribute to the management of interaction, and structure ideas. The findings show that both teachers emphasized more on topical themes that function to familiarize the learners with the topics than themes that function to hedge and confirm the topics. These thematic features contribute to constructing emerging and distinctive features of the students’ hortatory exposition writing. It was found that the novice teacher posed more frequent questions on all themes that indicated more varied questioning strategies. Moreover, the quality of the students’ hortatory exposition essays relied on the presentation and sequence of themes and arguments attributed to the teachers’ questions. Overall, the study indicates the significance of teachers' questioning strategies for eliciting the students’ presentation and construction of knowledge in their argumentative style.

Abstract

This study provides an overview of the level of students’ cognitive load in learning English in vocational schools. A quantitative descriptive study uses a cross-sectional survey conducted to measure the level of cognitive load of students in learning English in vocational schools. The subjects are 69 respondents who are students from one of the private vocational schools in Denpasar City. A questionnaire with 9 Likert scales is used to measure Intrinsic Cognitive Load (ICL) and Extraneous Cognitive Load (ECL). Data are analysed with 5 category scales based on the ideal score of the instrument used. The results show that Intrinsic Cognitive Load (ICL) dominates English learning in vocational schools compared to Extraneous Cognitive Load (ECL). The percentage of cognitive load level is dominated at a high level for Intrinsic Cognitive Load (ICL) and a medium level for Extraneous Cognitive Load (ECL). Because the results of this study explain the high cognitive load of Intrinsic Cognitive Load (ICL) level, it is recommended to balance the cognitive challenge in teaching materials so as not to burden students in learning English speaking in vocational schools. Future research should aim to examine the factors that influence these differences in cognitive load levels more comprehensively in a broader context to improve generalizability.

Abstract

Out-of-class learning is an additional vital component in successful English language acquisition among proficient ESL users. Thus, this study employed a quantitative research approach to investigate out-of-class English language practice by Malaysian ESL post-secondary students. 106 first-semester Diploma in Tourism Management students at a Malaysian university were the respondents of this study. The respondents were asked to fill in a survey questionnaire about their Malaysian Certificate of Education (SPM) English grade, perceived ability of four language skills (reading, writing, listening, speaking) and vocabulary knowledge in English language, frequency of using the four skills during their free time, and types of vocabulary learning approach they applied. The data was later statistically analysed using frequency, percentage, mean, standard deviation, one-way ANOVA, and simple linear regression tests. Out of the four language skills, the respondents reported they frequently practiced or applied listening skill in the English language the most during their free time, whereas writing is the least used or applied skill. With regards to their self-perceived language skills, most respondents claimed that they have good mastery of reading skill, but writing skill is their Achilles heel. In addition, this study found the respondents’ English language proficiency level (SPM English grade) and perceived language skills influence their frequency of practicing or applying each language skill during their free time. Finally, in terms of their vocabulary learning approach, most respondents said they do not actively try to increase their vocabulary knowledge during their free time. Nevertheless, they tend to unintentionally discover and learn new English words while doing everyday activities.
