Abstract

This research investigates the language choices and digital identities represented in text messages exchanged by high school students in the New Capital City of Indonesia (Ibu Kota Nusantara/IKN) and the implications of these linguistic practices for language teaching. Using a corpus of messages transmitted via WhatsApp collected from 100 high school students, this study produced 2.1 million tokens of 83,414 word types. This study uses corpus linguistic analysis to investigate the distinctive features of language usage, lexical changes, and communication trends in the digital discourse of IKN high school students. Data analysis utilizes features from AntConc corpus tools, including word lists, collocations, concordances, and N-grams. Concerning the features uncovered the subtle nuances that contribute to the unique linguistic identity of the student authors. This research highlights how digital language patterns attribute individual identity within the context of IKN high school students. The data analysis discovers three linguistic patterns in the electronic texts produced by IKN High School students, reflecting their general digital identity as language users in IKN, namely (1) lexical choice, (2) orthographic selection, and (3) lexical bundles. Furthermore, the study reveals the complex construction of digital identity through language, with students negotiating social positions, connections, and personal identities via their linguistic choices in electronic texts. The research findings contribute to the implications of language teaching in the IKN area and a deeper understanding of how students within the IKN area express themselves through language in the virtual realm, thus shaping their digital identities.

Abstract

While acquiring a second language, learners may encounter challenges and difficulties in effectively carrying out verbal communication in the second language. Mastering the apology speech act is a challenge for L2 learners. The objective of this study is to identify the apology strategies utilized by individuals learning the Japanese language, as well as the specific types and underlying causes of errors produced during the execution of apologetic speech acts. The results of this study were gathered via the Discourse Completion Test (DCT), which encompassed a sample of 150 Japanese language learners. The gathered data were further classified using eight semantic formulas based on the research conducted by Haristiani and Sopiyanti (2019), while the various types and sources of error categorization were conducted based on the theories proposed by Corder (1981) and Richards (1975). The results of this study suggest that Japanese learners utilize the same primary strategies in apology speech acts. Furthermore, the study findings indicated that learners at the intermediate level displayed a higher frequency of errors in their speech compared to learners at the beginner levels and pre-intermediate levels, particularly in the strategy of taking responsibility. The main reason for this was primarily a lack of familiarity with the conventions of sentence structures, the proper use of language, and the appropriate use of expressions. The other sources of errors in language learning are likely to be ignoring language rule restrictions, incomplete application of rules, the learner’s false hypothesis, overgeneralization, and language transfer. This study is anticipated to function as a point of reference for research in interlanguage pragmatics, second-language acquisition, and error analysis. Gaining comprehension of the various problems and difficulties encountered when performing the speech act of apology in Japanese can assist both learners and educators in reducing these errors.

Abstract

A tension exists between rationalists and empiricists regarding the nature of knowledge: innate then activated/discovered (rationalists) or constructed then invented (empiricists). The assumption is that, to a certain extent, basic knowledge seems to be innate in our mind and develops through experience by thinking processes to construct meanings. This meaning construction (thinking), mainly using language, is to make sense of and interpret the world. Meanings should be the primary motivation underlying linguistic constructions at all levels. This paper investigates meaning constructions at the lexical level of affixation by focusing on semantic behaviours of verbs in a complex word formation as an attempt: 1) to find out the semantic patterns of verb-based complex word formation, 2) to reveal if there is an iconic relationship of a sign (signifier) and its meaning (signified), and 3) to suggest for its teaching. Using semantic classes of verbs, based on situation types in deriving complex words, this study attempts to find out semantic patterns of such complex word formation and the possibility of revealing its iconicity. Using Antconc software, this study scrutinized linguistic expressions involving related verbs of state, event, and action in a corpus to reveal meaning construction at that level. The findings show several semantic patterns of verb-based complex word formation and an indication of the iconicity of signs. The paper also offers suggestions for teaching affixation

Abstract

This qualitative study investigated the verbal use of teacher symbols in a classroom Indonesian at a private university in Surabaya, Indonesia. Anchored by qualitative analysis and followed by two female teachers and five Indonesian Department students, the data was collected through interviews and in-depth observation. It was designed to find out what types of pragmahypersemiotic verbal symbols teachers use in the classroom, as well as the extent to which pragmahypersemiotic verbal symbols contribute to student feedback in class. Using the analytical lens of verbal symbol power in the classroom, the research findings show that the type of verbal power teacher symbol used in the classroom is the symbol of Directive, Request, and enticement. However, verbal symbols can have a positive impact on student feedback because students can participate actively in class, and can build motivation and confidence when interacting with both teachers and classmates.
