Abstract

Non-formal education-based community service programs play a strategic role in addressing children's literacy challenges in densely populated urban areas. This article describes the implementation and impact of the English Club empowerment program in Buaran, Klender, East Jakarta, initiated by volunteer mothers as an alternative access to English language learning for elementary school children. The program includes the development of English Club learning modules, teacher training, the establishment of a bilingual reading corner, game-based literacy activities, and a parenting seminar in the digital era. Evaluation was conducted through participatory observation, documentation of learning products, and partner reflections. Results indicate that strengthening the capacity of teachers in designing more structured and interactive sessions, increased child engagement in literacy activities and utilization of the reading corner, and positive responses from partners and parents reflecting increased self-confidence and collective awareness of the importance of literacy and family education. These findings confirm that the community-based English Club is effective in improving children's English literacy while empowering women as agents of education in urban environments, in line with SDGs 4 (Quality Education) and 5 (Gender Equality).

Abstract

Deep Learning is an approach that emphasizes creating meaningful, reflective, and enjoyable learning experiences. One appropriate learning method to support this approach is Problem-Based Learning (PBL). However, many high school chemistry teachers in North Banjarmasin are still unfamiliar with Deep Learning and have not yet implemented PBL optimally. Therefore, the solution offered is to conduct a workshop to improve chemistry teachers' understanding and skills related to Deep Learning and PBL. In this workshop, chemistry teachers were also provided with skills in using AI technology to facilitate the design of teaching materials that are in line with the Deep Learning and PBL approaches. To assess the results and impact of this activity on improving chemistry teachers' competencies, a pretest and posttest were used. Before the implementation, the average pretest score was recorded at 65 ± 23.21, indicating the diversity and limitations of chemistry teachers' knowledge. After the activity, the average posttest score increased to 96 ± 0.52. These results indicate that the workshop was effective and had a positive influence on improving chemistry teachers' abilities in implementing Deep Learning in PBL with the assistance of AI.

Abstract

This community service program was conducted at MA Ar-Rahman Sumoyono, a private Islamic senior high school in Jombang, Indonesia, targeting Grade XII students and teachers. The school faced three main challenges: a low percentage of graduates admitted to public universities, limited computer resources with unstable internet access, and insufficient digital literacy that hindered the use of Android devices for learning. To address these issues, the program introduced Android-based training designed to improve readiness for the national university entrance test (UTBK/SNBT). The intervention included developing UTBK-oriented modules, creating a mobile application with CBT simulations equipped with timers and automated scoring, and integrating the application into both classroom and independent learning. Additional activities comprised digital literacy workshops and continuous monitoring through learning analytics. Early results indicate improved student preparedness and confidence, alongside better utilization of information technology in a resource-limited madrasah context. These findings demonstrate the potential of mobile-based simulations as scalable solutions to strengthen exam readiness and digital literacy.

Abstract

Coffee is a crucial commodity for Indonesia, particularly in the smallholder plantation sector. However, coffee husks often lead to environmental pollution. This study focuses on processing coffee husks into briquettes as an eco-friendly alternative fuel and a potential economic benefit. The briquette production process starts with the collection and drying of coffee husks, followed by roasting, grinding, and mixing with binders such as tapioca. The resulting briquettes are packaged in a functional design to facilitate distribution and enhance burning efficiency. This community service program involves farmer groups in Pace Village, Silo District, Jember Regency, East Java, using the methods of identifying needs, training, and making briquette prototypes. The results show that coffee husk briquettes are not only effective in reducing waste but also provide economic benefits such as additional income for farmers and micro-business opportunities. Furthermore, these briquettes contribute to deforestation reduction and lower carbon emissions. With proper training and support, coffee husk briquette production can become a small industry that supports the local economy and improves community welfare.

Abstract

Digital transformation requires students not only to be capable of writing but also proficient in searching for literature, managing references, and utilizing artificial intelligence (AI) ethically in academic writing. However, students of the Geography Education Department, FKIP Universitas Lambung Mangkurat, still face difficulties in finding relevant references, understanding the ethical use of AI, and consistently preparing citations and bibliographies. This community service activity aimed to improve academic digital literacy through an integrated hands-on training program involving 95 participants. The implementation method consisted of preparation, implementation, evaluation, and follow-up stages. Participants were trained to use various AI tools for literature searching and Mendeley for reference management. The evaluation results showed an improvement in participants’ understanding, indicated by an increase in the average score from 58.4 to 83.2 (42.4%). In addition, 86.3% of participants were able to use AI tools, 91.6% were able to use Mendeley, and 94.7% were able to independently create citations and bibliographies. These findings indicate that hands-on training is effective in improving students’ academic digital literacy in terms of skills, understanding, and ethical awareness in the use of technology.

Abstract

Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) engaged in Etawa goat farming have significant potential to support food security and strengthen local economic development in Lumajang Regency. However, the partner MSME, Goatzilla Farm located in Senduro District, continues to face challenges in processing fresh goat milk, particularly related to limited shelf life and inadequate hygiene standards. This community engagement program aims to enhance MSME competitiveness through the transfer of pasteurization technology that is efficient, easy to operate, and suitable for local production capacity. The program was implemented through technical training, demonstration of pasteurization equipment, and on-site mentoring on hygienic milk processing practices at the partner’s production facility. The results indicate improved technical understanding and operational skills among the MSME actors, accompanied by enhanced product quality, as reflected in an increase in milk shelf life from 1–2 days to 5–7 days under refrigerated storage. Furthermore, the improved product quality strengthened consumer trust and created opportunities for product diversification. Overall, this initiative contributes to strengthening MSME competitiveness through technological innovation and supports sustainable local economic development in Lumajang Regency.

Abstract

Based on the Decree of the Regent of Malang number 188.45/253/KEP/35.07.013/2023 concerning Tourism Villages in Malang Regency, Sumberdem Village is included in the pioneering category of tourist villages with natural and artificial potential. One of the completeness of a tourist village is the presence of tourist souvenirs, namely culinary, fashion, and crafts. As a pioneering tourist village, Sumberdem Village already has a nature-based thematic village/hamlet and has also developed culinary products such as processed coffee, rosella flowers, lemons, medicinal plants/’empon-empon’, and goat farming, but does not yet fully have craft products as tourist souvenirs. On the other hand, Sumberdem Village has incredibly unique natural potential, namely plants/leaves and flowers, including coffee, papaya, ferns, cloves, ylang-ylang, roses, pine, castor, and so on. These natural materials make ecoprint craft products easy to develop. Based on this situation, the goal of this community service program is to improve the skills of residents in "Creating ecoprint products based on local wisdom to support the preparation of tourism villages." The solution offered is training and practical experience in ecoprinting using natural materials typical of the village. From this training, participants and the village produced ecoprint products in the form of ecoprinted fabrics.
