Abstract

The need to master 21st century skills demand preservice teachers to have pedagogical competencies that are adaptive to change, especially in terms of implementing 21st century learning models and integrating technology into learning. One solution to meet the demands of preservice teachers is e-learning, a flexible, adaptive and interactive learning that allows users to access content anywhere, following structured stages. The success of e-learning depends on the effectiveness of implementing an approach such as DARP (Discuss, Archive, Reflect, and Prepare). This approach ensures that the e-learning platform is interactive, reflective and evaluative. The aim of this research is to examine the response of users of e-learning prototypes of 21st century learning models designed with a reflective and interactive approach. This initial prototype was developed to meet user needs and align with the intended goals, using a usability questionnaire for evaluation. The method used in this research is SDLC (System Development Life Cycle) which consists of five stages, namely planning, analysis, design, implementation and testing. This research involved 30 students and 2 lecturers, and the usability of the e-learning platform was assessed using the USE Questionnaire. The development of this prototype received positive feedback from both students and lecturers, this shows that DARP-based e-learning can be further developed as a learning platform to support improving the pedagogical competence of 21st century preservice teacher.

Abstract

The present study aimed to develop and validate the Indonesian-language version of the Critical Consciousness Scale of Environmental Issues (CCS-EI), specifically for higher education contexts. Employing Rasch analysis, the study rigorously examines the instrument’s reliability and validity through item fit statistics, rating scale functionality, and differential item functioning. The CCS-EI is designed to measure students' critical consciousness in environmental contexts, encompassing dimensions of critical reflection, critical motivation, and critical action. A diverse sample of 579 (male 87%; female 13%) participants from various university in Indonesia completed a 34-item of the CCS-EI. The sampling technique used is convenience sampling. Data were analysed using the Rasch model analysis, it was performed using the Winsteps version 5.6.1.0 software. The results of the Rasch analysis indicated that the reliability of the instrument was excellent (a = 0.91), item quality was excellent (1.00), and person reliability was consistent (0.91). In the validity aspect, all three domains of the CCS-EI exhibited unidimensionality, and a rating scale with four answer choices was deemed appropriate. The study also identifies item difficulty level in each dimension. Furthermore, the CCS-EI showed strong convergent validity, correlating significantly with existing measures of critical reflection, motivation, and action concerning environmental issues. This positions the CCS-EI as a reliable and valid instrument for use in various fields. Its ability to quantify critical consciousness provides valuable insights for designing educational evaluation and shaping policies that promote deeper engagement with environmental sustainability, contributing to both theoretical and practical advancements in the field.

Abstract

Plant physiology is material that is considered difficult, and studying it requires adequate numeracy literacy, especially in practicums.  Thus, it is necessary to reveal the student's numeracy literacy profile and the level of conceptual change before and after the practicum. This study used a pre-experimental design with a pre-test and post-test group.  The pre-test regarding numeracy literacy, which refers to the Minimum Competency Assessment, is given to Biology Education Department students who are contracting the Plant Physiology course in the odd semester 2022/2023, conducted before practicum about accumulation of mineral nutrients in plant cells, nutrient culture, water potential, and osmotic potential. After each practicum, students are assigned to answer response questions, and it ends with a post-test. The results showed that there was an increase in student numerical literacy from the very low category (42.7) into the moderate category (62.1) with level of conceptual change in the construction and N-gain in low categories. Although it has the potential to improve students' numeracy literacy, the Plant Physiology practicum needs to be improved, for example, by involving practical students in preparing substances and strengthening the lecturers in their responses.

Abstract

The low level of science literacy and student motivation demands innovative, relevant, and engaging learning media. This study aims to measure the effectiveness of a contextual-based plant encyclopedia in improving science literacy and student motivation in elementary schools. This study uses a quantitative method with a quasi-experimental one-group pretest-posttest design. The research population consists of 4th-grade students from SD Kotagede 3, Yogyakarta, with a sample of 20 students selected through simple random sampling. The research instruments include pretest-posttest questions to measure science literacy, Guttman scale questionnaires for learning motivation, as well as observation sheets and interviews to support qualitative data. We analyzed the data using descriptive statistics and the non-parametric Wilcoxon test, as the assumption test results indicated that the data did not meet the criteria for normality and homogeneity. The research results show a significant increase in students' science literacy (p < 0.001), although there was no significant increase in learning motivation (p = 0.492). These findings indicate that context-based encyclopedias are highly effective in supporting students' understanding of science concepts through the presentation of engaging and structured information. However, the minimal impact on learning motivation indicates the need for additional strategies, such as teacher guidance and increased media interactivity. The implications of this research include the integration of context-based encyclopedias as effective learning media and the need for supporting strategies, such as longer intervention durations and teacher guidance for more optimal results.
