Abstract

Students in South Sumatra are familiar with the direct impacts of forest and peatland fires, yet understanding their connection to global warming remains limited and requires targeted educational interventions. This study investigates conceptual change among 16 students in Palembang after participating in modeling-based learning activities about forest and peatland fires. Although Palembang does not experience such fires directly, the city is heavily affected by the resulting haze, which impacts health, visibility, and daily activities, including school attendance. A qualitative approach was used, and data were collected through multiple-choice questions and student-generated drawings to capture shifts in understanding. The results revealed varied levels of conceptual understanding, categorized as scientific conception from the beginning (37%), static understanding (20%), disorientation (17%), revision or reconstruction (8%), and construction of new understanding (18%). A total of 26% of students demonstrated positive conceptual change after the intervention. These findings suggest that modeling serves as an effective tool to help students visualize complex environmental processes and make connections between local phenomena and global issues. The study highlights the importance of incorporating interactive, visual learning strategies in environmental education to foster deeper, more accurate understanding among students, particularly in areas indirectly affected by ecological disasters. Such approaches can empower students to become more informed and responsible citizens in the face of climate change.

Abstract

Sustainability consciousness acts as a compass in making considerations, behaving, and acting with attention to sustainability aspects. This research aims to determine how the sustainability consciousness of high school students is assessed using the Sustainability Consciousness Questionnaire (SCQ), which has been adapted and tailored to the research context. The collected data were analyzed using comprehensive Rasch modeling to measure latent variables. The Rasch analysis was conducted using the Winsteps application, focusing on validity, reliability, student sustainability consciousness, and Differential Item Functioning (DIF). Based on the Rasch analysis, it was found that the sustainability consciousness of the students was relatively good and varied across three analyzed dimensions: sustainability knowingness, sustainability attitudes, and sustainability behavior. The DIF analysis revealed that there were two items out of a total of 27 that fell into the DIF category. This indicates that there are differences in responses shown by male and female students. These findings support previous research regarding how attitudes toward sustainability differ based on gender. Furthermore, the topics explored in biology learning are highly relevant to the majority of issues that are central to sustainability concerns. Therefore, through biology education, students’ knowledge, attitudes, and behaviors can be nurtured and developed. In this way, the knowledge they acquire can be transformed into concrete actions. Moreover, this study contributes to empirical research on sustainability consciousness demonstrated by high school students.

Abstract

The continuous advancement of technology in the era of globalization has an inevitable impact on the educational sector, particularly in the learning process. The use of media is one of the critical components in this process. This research develops an educational medium in the form of a documentary film about the human reproductive system, based on an inventory of medicinal plants for male reproductive health in Padang Tikar Village. This documentary film is designed to support the explanation of abstract concepts related to the human reproductive system, thereby facilitating the understanding of material that cannot be directly observed. The objective of this study is to develop and assess the feasibility of an instructional medium in the form of a documentary film on the human reproductive system, based on the inventory of medicinal plants for male reproductive health in Padang Tikar Village, West Kalimantan, Indonesia. The research design employs a Research and Development (R&D) approach, limited to five stages: identifying potential and problems, data collection, product design, design validation, and design revision. The research instruments used include an interview sheet with Grade XI Biology teachers and a feasibility test sheet for validating the documentary film by five validators, consisting of three Biology teachers and two Biology Education lecturers, to assess the documentary's feasibility in terms of format, content, language, and usability. The validation analysis employs a formula based on Aiken’s V (Aiken, 1985). Results show that the documentary film achieved high validity in all aspects, with average scores of 0.84 for format, 0.85 for content, 0.93 for language, and 0.91 for usability. The overall average score was 0.87. These findings indicate that the developed documentary film is highly feasible and can be used as an effective educational medium for teaching the human reproductive system.

Abstract

Ineffective teaching is one of the factors influencing the low level of students' critical thinking skills. Rooted in local wisdom, ethno-PjBL integrates project-based learning principles with ethnopedagogical values, requiring students to think critically. This research aims to determine the impact of the ethno-PjBL on students' critical thinking skills in addressing real-life environmental issues. This research uses a quasi-experimental method and a pretest-posttest non-equivalent control group design. Up to 100 of the 353 tenth-grade students at one of the upper secondary schools in Banda Aceh were selected using purposive sampling techniques. This research used 17 multiple choice with written justification tests, developed based on Ennis’s critical thinking indicators. An independent sample t-test was used to assess the intervention effect and n-gain was used to measure the score improvement. Data were analyzed using an independent sample t-test to assess the intervention effect and n-gain to calculate score improvement. The findings prove a significant effect (0.010 < 0.05) and a higher n-gain in the experimental group (0.46) compared with the control group (0.25), indicating that the ethno-PjBL effectively fosters students' critical thinking skills. Integrating indigenous knowledge in project-based learning should be encouraged to nurture students’ critical thinking skills.

Abstract

This research aims to determine the effect of problem-based learning (PBL) learning model on the science process skills (SPS) of grade XI students on respiratory system material. This research used quantitative method with pre-experimental design. Biology learning requires student-centered learning to improve students' science process skills. However, students are rarely involved in teaching and learning activities. The low level of participation of students in biology learning causes the science process skills of students to be less emphasized. The research was conducted by applying the PBL model to class XI.7 at SMAN 1 Palembang with respiratory system learning material. The instruments used included pre-test and post-test SPS tests, as well as a questionnaire sheet for students' responses to learning using PBL. Data analysis was done by normality test, paired t-test, effect size test, and N-gain test. The results showed that there was a significant effect on students' SPS with learning using the PBL model. The PBL model has a positive influence in improving the SPS aspects of observing, classifying, concluding, predicting, and communicating. This is supported by the results of filling out a questionnaire of students' responses to learning using the PBL model as a whole giving a very good response to PBL. This research can be further developed by using further research designs, such as research using a control class to determine the comparison of the effectiveness of PBL models with other learning models
